Re: Greek Fed Cup Team

IRL d. GRE 2-1
Grammatikopoulou d. Fennelly 6-2 6-0
Bowtell d. Sakkari 4-6 6-3 6-2
Bowtell/Dillon d. Grammatikopoulou/Sakkari 6-4 6-3

New low for Greece
Embarrassing to spend another year in crappy Group III with all these joke teams that don't even have ranked players. Proved that we belong here
Congrats to Ireland, their players fought so hard and actually cared
And it means a lot more to the, than us. Our girls basically realized in 2011 why bother if we have no shot of getting past Group I so now they simply don't care anymore. Instead of honorably staying in Group I year after year our best girls prefer to not play at all. Ireland on the other hand are thrilled about this and Tennis Ireland's twitter has been buzzing and it is huge for the Irish tennis community. Great for them . Greeks wouldn't have cared if we won.
But it's really pathetic for Greece to lose to a team like Ireland (no offense) even though Eleni and Despina didn't play, still...
Valentini played her heart out all week for nothing
I love Maria but when it comes to Fed Cup she's just hopeless out there, her 2-12 record says it all

I would further comment on this but no one cares and I'm starting to not care either because every year we get even more pathetic

(Cyprus, Moldova, Greece)

Re: Greek Fed Cup Team

Greece d. Moldova 2-1
Grammatikopoulou d. Detiuc 6-1 6-0
Sakkari d. Helbet 6-1 6-2
Helbet/Porubin d. Sakkari/Stefanou 6-2 6-3

Maria and Agni probably didn't care about the dead doubles rubber

Promotional playoff against Ireland tomorrow

Re: Greek Fed Cup Team

Of course Eleni decided to not play at the last moment for the third straight year. At least she tweeted good luck to the team . So for the third straight year, we only have three girls on the team . It's pathetic that with all the players we have, we are in this position of Group III. Obviously the crisis forced some girls to quit (Georgatou) but still we have 10 WTA ranked players and another 5 or so who should be ranked very soon. No other country in Group III has anywhere near as many players as us, not even Estonia (although they have better quality with Kaia and Annett).

Shocked that Despina skipped. She's never missed Fed Cup since she first played in 2010. What's even more strange is that she's entered the 15K Tallinn next week. So she's going to Tallinn for the 15K and not for Fed Cup? Grammatikopoulou has never played before. Sakkari and Stefanou have played before but are both winless in Fed Cup. We haven't even won a tie since we beat Denmark (with Woz when she was #1 ) in 2011

Anyways we beat Cyprus 3-0
Grammatikopoulou d. Omirou 6/0 6/0
Sakkari d. Siopacha 6/2 7/5
Grammatikopoulou/Stefanou d. Patsali/Tsaggaridou 6/2 6/4

vs. Moldova on Friday for a spot in the promotion playoffs

Also great for Valentini to win to rubbers in her Fed Cup debut
And Maria (1-9) and Agni (1-3) got their first Fed Cup wins

Wozniacki pulled out

Re: Greek Fed Cup Team

Oh, and our captain situation is weird. Kalovelonis was captain for a few years including 2011. Then it was Michalopoulos in 2012. Then Kalovelonis in 2013 and now it's going to be Michalopoulos again in 2014

Re: Greek Fed Cup Team

69th ranked Greek team will be: Eleni Daniilidou, Despina Papamichail, Maria Sakkari, and Valentini Grammatikopoulou

Favorites for promotion are Estonia (with Kanepi) and Denmark (with Wozniacki) as well as us. I hope Eleni plays because in the last two years she was initially nominated but didn't end up playing

Also Norway is decent so we shouldn't sleep on them

Let's hope for a good draw!

Re: Greek Fed Cup Team

Eleni bailed on us just like last year, so we only had 3 girls.

MNE d. GRE 2-1
Papamichail d. Veselinovic 6-1 6-2
Despina lost to her earlier this year, so that is good
Kovinic d. Sakkari 6-2 6-3
Kovinic is ranked ~400 spots above Maria
Kovinic/Krstajic d. Papamichail/Vogasari 6-0 7-6(13)
I wonder how many SPs were wasted in the second set

LTU d. GRE 2-1
Papamichail d. Mikulskyte 6-1 6-1
Stanciute d. Sakkari 5-7 6-2 6-1
This one was expected because Stanciute is a great and experienced player, but Maria should've fought back to try and take the third set
Mikulskyte/Stanciute d. Papamichail/Vogasari 4-6 6-0 6-2
Absolutely horrifying. They had it

RSA d. GRE 2-1
Papamichail d. Grandin 6-3 7-6(13)
Good win, and it's encouraging to see she pulled it out in the second after probably wasting dozens of SPs
Simmonds d. Sakkari 6-3 6-0
She didn't even try in the second set probably
Grandin/le Roux d. Papamichail/Vogasari 6-4 6-4
Tough loss, but they lost every tie with the same lineup, you would think they would try changing up the lineup right? Yeah, not Greece

Relegation Play-Off:
FIN d. GRE 2-1
Papamichail d. Tuomi 6-0 6-3
Should've played Vogasari instead so Papamichail could play against Suomalainen and have a shot...
Suomalainen d. Sakkari 6-0 6-2
Leivo/Suomalainen d. Papamichail/Vogasari 6-4 2-6 7-5
I can't anymore

Very disappointing. These ties were winnable. When Eleni pulled out, they should've called up Grammatikopoulou. It also sucks that Gerasimou and Georgatou stopped playing, because they could've been very useful. We should be in Group I but now we will go down to Group III, how embarrassing! Most of the teams in Group II barely have any ranked players, and we have 8-9! Against Lithuania we were up a set in two matches that we lost . Sakkari still winless in Fed Cup, Vogasari too.

Re: Greek Fed Cup Team

Now the aftermath

So many questions to be answered about why none of our 3 singles players were in Eilat since no one in our team had ever played Fed Cup singles before...
Why Stefanou instead of Sakkari...
Why Eleni bailed on us...
Why we only had 3 players...
Why we got a new Fed Cup captain after nominations were made and who is he since he's not a former player and no one knows him...
Why Kanellopoulou didn't play even though she was probably there for Maria JK
Why we lost to Bosnia in the first place...
Who will be in the team next year...
What Eleni will say in her next blog or twitter status,if she will even discuss it...
How will this affect Agni, Despina, and Maria for the rest of the year? Must ruin their confidence...It must be discouraging for these young players to come so close and then all their hard work is gone . The three of them must be very upset. They were writing to each other on Facebook. Poor Sakkari. She even made her status saying that she wanted to go back in time and replay the match point

Twitter was buzzing with this match
Many people were just posting score updates but there were some people tweeting from there. Here are some of the highlights:

@stu_fraser Greece team just got on my plane... think they were worried about making the flight?! Playing on their minds in the final set?

@stu_fraser That explains why they were still wearing their kit.

Action ain't over yet. Watching nervy relegation deciding set between Greece & Luxembourg. Lux had match point at 5-1 but now 5-4*. #FedCup

This is unbelievable. Lux had 2 match points and incredibly put an easy smash long on the 1st. Now 5-5. This is what it's all about #FedCup

Tiebreak between Greece & Luxembourg to retain Group One status at 10:20pm. Great to watch. #FedCup

What could have been one of biggest chokes in tennis is averted. After match points for both in tiebreak, Luxembourg take it 10-8. #FedCup

nice fight , probably heartbreaking loss for the Greeks
So much support from non-Greeks but we couldn't do it in the end
