Are coach and captain sometimes two different people? The Times names Ann Jones as captain of the British side for 1988 and 1989, but a number of sources mention Marty Riessen as the coach/non-playing captain of the U.S. team in both 1988 and 1989 (and 1986 and 1987).
Thanks for the help with 88 and 89 Mrs A-it completes our list!

They were sometimes different. I also came across the term "manager" at times also, especially on British side.

Re: Wightman Cup

I want to use this space to put in surfaces for the Cup in its later stages. Until the 1960s it had always been held on grass, usually at Wimbledon and Forest Hills.

I'll use Dolan as a source, noting years I want to double check.

1951-Chesnut Hill (Grass) *The first time WC was not held at Wimbledon or Forest Hills.
----
1957-Sewickley (Green Clay) *The first time WC was not on grass.
---
1959-Sewickley (Green Clay)
---
1961-Chicago (Green Clay)
---
1963-Cleveland (Green Clay)
---
1965-Cleveland-(Green Clay)
---
1967-Cleveland (Hard)
---
1969-Wimbledon (Grass)
1969-Cleveland (Hard)
1970-Wimbledon-Grass
1971-Cleveland-(Hard-UniRoyal Synthetic). *Outdoors on carpet. The surface seams were popping up during play and created controversy.
1972-Wimbledon-(Grass) *This was the last WC at Wimbledon.
1973-Longwood (Hard-Uniturf)*-Note I will check 1973 as I have have some doubts on that year and I possess a program from the event.
1974-Deeside (Indoors on Uniface). *The first WC held indoors. After 1974 most venues all were indoors except for 1979.
1975-Cleveland (Indoors on Sporteze).
1976-London-(Indoors on Uniturf)
1977-Oakland-(Indoors on Sporteze)
1978-London-(Indoors on Uniturf)
1979-Palm Beach (Green Clay) *The last WC held outdoors.
1980-London- (Indoors on Supreme)
1981-Chicago-(Indoors on Sporteze)
1982-London (Indoors on Supreme)
1983-Williamsburg (Indoors on Sporteze)
1984-London (Indoors on Supreme)
1985-Williamsburg (Indoors on Supreme)
1986-London )Indoors on Supreme)
1987-Williamsburg (Indoors on Supreme)

With the rise of Laura Robson, do you think that Wightman Cup could be resurrected?

I always found this competition historically fascinating. It's sad that it ended.

Could be interesting in a few years with Sloane Stephens and Laura Robson. But they desperately need more British players.
It would take an almost Murray-like figure on the women's side IMO. In many ways the rise of Margaret Smith Court and a host of other top ten Aussie women meant the eventual end of the Wightman Cup. Air travel meant other teams could join in too.

Hazel herself would have approved, as making the event a true Davis Cup style event for women was her purpose from the start.

Re: Wightman Cup

I have read that the English are to commemorate the Wightman Cup with a match in the Royal Albert Hall, the strange thing while this was a women's cup they let two guys play that match McEnroe and Lendl. Two women to play this match could they not be found.

I have no idea why Alice was in such a funk over this match. Normally Alice could beat the beautiful Kay without any problems, but alas this is another match where for whatever reason Alice losses to a lesser player.

Moody d Scriven 6-0, 7-5
Fabyan d Lumb 5-7, 6-2, 6-3
Marble d Scriven 6-3, 3-6, 6-0
Moody d Stammers 6-2, 3-6, 6-3
Marble/Fabyan d Lumb/James 6-4, 6-2
Dearman/Ingram d Moody/Bundy 6-2, 7-5

The U.S. team (from left to right): Sarah Palfrey Fabyan Cooke Danzig, Dorothy Bundy Cheney, Helen Wills Moody, Alice Marble, and Helen Jacobs.
