Re: Goddess in training: Despina Papamichail

Despina has been quite poor since the last post. She fell down to 546 in singles and also to 216 in doubles (after being 162 in September).

She had a couple of good wins over Rampre and Kovalets. Also managed to beat Barbat on indoor hard (but couldn't do it on slow clay in Fed Cup )

She took two months off and is now back playing 10Ks in Egypt. In the first one she reached the singles semis (lost to top-seeded and eventual champ Skamlova) and doubles final (lost to top-seeded Krejsova/Skamlova).

She is still playing in the second 10K. She cruised to the semis without dropping a set, and will now face 2nd seeded Sandra Samir. Despina lost her doubles semi 16-14 in the super tiebreak

Next week she will play the next 10K in Egypt. Then she is not scheduled to play the following week.

I hope Despina can rack up some points in singles since she has nothing to defend until May, and barely anything to defend until July. I think she can still have a decent singles career as she is a hard-worker but at the same time, she is turning 23 in a few weeks and has never been able to crack the top 300. She's basically been stuck in the 300-700 range for five years.

I think Despina should still try in singles but if she can't improve then she should turn to doubles because she has had a lot of success there and if she focuses on doubles and plays more bigger challengers then I think she can go very far in the doubles world

Re: Goddess in training: Despina Papamichail

Despina has been so mediocre in singles
But in doubles she just won another 25K title a few minutes ago
She's currently ranked 178 in doubles, really great and it looks like she'll go up even more

Despina had surgery and Eleni was helping her in Glasgow and then visited her in Athens. Despina will come back in about a month

Eleni Daniilidou posted this pic. Despina had a meniscus problem but everything is going well and she hopes to return soon
This picture is from the hospital in Greece where she is being treated, and Eleni went to visit her

Re: Goddess in training: Despina Papamichail

Grymalska d. Papamichail 4-6 ret.
Shame she had to give a walkover especially since she was winning
She was up 5-1 and then won the set 6-4 and then retired so she probably figured she couldn’t continue

She withdrew from doubles and from her next tournament but is still on the list for week of 23 February so hopefully she will be okay by then

25K Glasgow:
R1 vs. Anastasia Grymalska ITA (#294)
Doubles as the top seeded team with Eleni Daniilidou, R1 BYE, QF vs. Dentoni/Giovine. She drew all Italians in Glasgow
Hopefully she beats them

Re: Goddess in training: Despina Papamichail

^She did have MPs
I read that she had four

This week’s 10K Egypt:
R1 d. Jazzamay Drew GBR (#937) 6-0 7-6(1)
R2 l. to (WC) Anastasija Sevastova LAT (career high 36) 0-6 2-6

Really just an unlucky draw against Sevastova in her comeback tournament . Despina was the top seed here so it’s too bad she couldn’t get a draw, especially since Sevastova’s QF was against a qualifier and SF will also be against a qualifier . Oh well, the draw gods were against Despina this week, that’s tennis, it happens some times

Despina was also top-seeded in doubles with Rosatello again, and they won R1 and QF but lost SF

Next week she’ll play the 25K in Glasgow, GBR. She’ll be in the MD for singles and she’ll play doubles with….Eleni Daniilidou

Re: Goddess in training: Despina Papamichail

6-3 6-7(4) 3-6
I wonder if she had match points in the second set
She was 5/13 on break points…
Oh well . At least she reached SF and now she’ll stay in Egypt for next week’s 10K

She'd better win this after beating the Norwegian girl
Good to see you here again
The Norwegian girls have been playing quite well lately especially Stokke

I followed this match on the livescores and I’m really proud of her fight after a bagel in the first set, but she was up 5-3 in the third and probably should’ve closed it out sooner . The scoreboard froze at 5-5 15-30 and then was finally working again with Despina leading 6-3 in the TB

This is a match she should’ve won in straights but at least she is winning
SF vs. (4) Pia Konig AUT (#379)

Re: Goddess in training: Despina Papamichail

6-2 4-6 6-1
Really probably should’ve won in two but at least she won even though spending over two hours on court probably wasn't ideal
QF vs. Britt Geukens BEL (#850)

Also she lost doubles 5 & 4

Re: Goddess in training: Despina Papamichail

I didn’t even know she started her season already
Didn’t see her on entry lists but she got a WC for a 10K in Egypt and is seeded second there
Defending finalist points from last year
R1 d. Anastasiya Komardina RUS (#686, junior #30) 6-4 6-2
Komardina was probably the toughest R1 she could’ve gotten, so a really good win
Despina hit 4 aces
R2 vs. Caroline Rohde-Moe NOR (#929)
This girl lost to Komardina in three sets last week

Despina is also the top seed in doubles with Rosatello. They won their R1 now QF against a Japanese pair

She will stay in Egypt for another 10K next week so she should definitely be able to defend those points (7) from the these two weeks, and hopefully she can gain more than that
The following week she will play a 25K in Great Britain. Currently in qualies but hopefully she can sneak into the main draw
