From Indian Wells to Miami, Hsieh chose to climb across the Grand Canyon National Park while Chuang, Liang and another one drove some 4000 km in 40+ hours from Palm Spring, California via San Antonio, Texas to Miami.

Heart Award nominee: Hsieh Su-Wei (TPE)

The first Fed Cup Heart Award nominee for Asia/Oceania Zone Group I is Hsieh Su-Wei from Chinese Taipei.

Playing as her nation’s No. 1, Hsieh won some key rubbers to help Chinese Taipei reach the World Group II play-offs for the first time since 2007.

Hsieh won three of her four rubbers, with two of her wins coming from a set down against higher-ranked players.

Her stand-out performance of the week was undoubtedly the 46 63 63 victory against world No. 60 Nao Hibino in the promotional play-off against Japan. Chang Kai-Chen had lost the opening rubber but Hsieh drew Chinese Taipei level, before Chinese Taipei’s top doubles players sealed the nation’s spot in the World Group II play-offs.

Her only defeat in the week came at the hands of Zarina Diyas, another Top 100 player, and Chinese Taipei still went on to win the tie.

Chinese Taipei will travel to Poland on 16-17 April for its World Group II play-off. With the Radwanska sisters awaiting, Hsieh will have much more to do if she is to guide her nation into World Group II for next year.

Voting for the Fed Cup Heart Award opens on Tuesday 29 March.
