Re: Kiki Bertens

This offhand remark by Johanna Larsson has me a bit worried about Kiki and her wrist!? Kiki has not mentioned it herself - AFAIK - but she took a MTO for it during their R1 match.

Translation: Kiki has had a big problem with her wrist, (she) almost practised less than I. (Larsson was ill with a stomach bug).

Kikibertens: Bye bye Melbourne, not the start of the year I was hoping for. Back home now to prepare and improve for the next tournaments. #ao2017 #backtowinter #workhard #believe

5 games in 51 minutes.

$11.5k.

70 points which are not going to count on her ranking.

Beaten by a team with a combined doubles ranking of 284, a team that has now won a total of 3 matches together.

Re: Kiki Bertens

I wonder if Kiki has picked her outfit for St. Petersburg yet?

Re: Kiki Bertens

Hey, remember last year when Kiki had played 65 matches before the French Open and I was yelling and screaming at Kiki and Billy to stop playing so much!?

What a dead wrong idiot I was. Kiki was able to play another 34 matches in a month before she got over-exhaustion.

Move along, nothing here to see. I'm just crying wolf, y'all.

Hope we don't have to be worried about the wrist

Would have liked to see Kiki (and Jo) on a plane to St. Petersburg ASAP but whatever..
Always makes me happy when they win.

Entry list for St. Petersburg. It's not final until later today, but big changes are probably not to be expected.

But I don't think skipping doubles at a Grand Slam would be a logical choice. It's the most important doubles tournaments of the year. So either, they lose early and she can implement your plan anyway, or they'll have the success that you don't think they will, right?
Yes, I'm sure she really enjoys playing doubles and I'm not at all dismissive of the positive emotions it brings. I definitively think the Linz-Lux double improved her overall mood last year after her post-Gstaad slump and exhaustion.

When I said she should "ditch doubles and go home!!!" it was a few hours into the tournament and she was already eliminated. Right after the Oz Open she is scheduled to play St. Petersburg, then there is Fed Cup in Romania, then Doha, Dubai - week off - Indian Wells and Miami. So the way I saw it, the best way to make room for a proper training block would have been to skip doubles and return to Europe.

But of course it's a gamble, and if they make the QF then it would obviously have been a very stupid idea to go home early. It was not something I seriously expected her to do, but it's kind of my wish that she will invest (gamble?) more in her singles game.

ETA: Considering the new information that Larsson has been severely under the weather since Sat/Sunday, I'll revise my "it's a gamble" position. I didn't know about this until this morning (Tuesday), but I presume Kiki has known all along. With Larsson uncertain to play, I think the wisest decision would have been for Kiki to go home after her first round exit.

Re: Kiki Bertens

Larsson/Bertens are scheduled to play Thursday, but Larsson is ill and is not certain to play. She will make the decision on Thursday.
