Re: The Juniors

Canadian girls finish 5th thanks to Bianca
Boulais did fine in doubles. Sleeth could have done better but that's ok for her first time. It will be interresting to see who will make the team next year without Bianca and Isabelle. I think Sleeth, Vagramov, Fernandez. Or perhaps Sengphrachand and Manolescu will surpise by continuing the good results of the past weeks and make the team.

Boys 2nd. Felix didn't have amazing team mates like he had last year. But making the final none the less was an awesome outcome IMHO

What's wrong in their relationship with TC? do you think it's about money, schedule, teaching methods or something else?

This is probably Bianca
Yup, it does look like Bianca (though I haven't seen her in a few years!).

Well, not everyone (actually, almost no one ) has been fully committed and agrees 100% with the NTC. The issues mostly arise for the difficulty of having courts, private lessons, etc. In a private club, the moment you have some money, you can have as much court time and private coaching time as you want. At the NTC (and I'm talking mostly of the U12 and U14 programs), they chose a group of players and they have them train together at specific times in the week, and rarely, see never, privately with a coach.

All of the top players who said they have been part of the NTC actually never really were: they were trained and constructed in private academies with private coaches, and at that stage of development, it is the one thing that makes the biggest difference. When you are part of a program that doesn't really allow you to get this....you go somewhere else.

BTW, I'm pretty sure we either know each other or kept on walking by each other at tennis events in the fast few years!

Re: The Juniors

I've known Leylah and her little sister Bianca ever since they started playing like 8 years ago. I'd be very surprised if she joins the NTC, as her father really has had a difficult relationship with Tennis Canada. Both girls were part of the Tennis Canada program and were training at Uniprix Stadium until 3 years ago, but then decided to get out of there and head to Laval and just not have anything to do with TC. And then Leylah had that great performance at the Orange Bowl shortly after, proving that they may have been right.

Similar to the Venus/Serena combo, I also believe Bianca will end up being better than Leylah. But last time I saw them, she was much smaller and less strong physically (for her age obviously). Bianca was a joy to coach.

2016 Canadian U18 World Ranking Event G2

QF -
Natasha SUBHASH (USA) [1] d. Leylah Annie FERNANDEZ (CAN) 6-1 3-6 6-2

I couldn't resist after lunch to go see LAF play for the first time. She took forever to get warmed up, made lots of UE in the first set. It was a bit cold and windy. Subhash is one year older (15) is a bit taller and physically stronger. The number one seed seemed in cruise control until the second set when Leylah started to get confident with some awesome winners CC and DTL, also with a couple of drop shots and lobs that scored too. She gladly comes to the net on short balls but will miss the obvious put aways too often. So she has a bit of variety. She tries to play in a fast pace, trying to rush her opponent, but Subhash could do it too. In the last set it looked like the Canadian lacked energy while the American raised her level enough for the win.

I liked what I saw. She has an undeniable potential. I bet she will enter the Montreal NTC in 2017, replacing Charlotte. Borfiga was there to have a good look at her game. Fernandez is from Laval just north of Montreal. She speaks perfect French, English and Spanish. She turned 14 three weeks ago.
