Re: The Juniors

Melodie Collard lost her Round 3 match at Les Petits As.
But no worries, Genie in 2007 lost in round 1 against ORLIK Hannah
and again in 2008 lost in round 1 against MC PHILLIPS Kyle

MELBOURNE - Carson Branstine is a junior player currently in limbo as she awaits changing her playing country affiliation from the USA to Canada.

Once the 13th-seeded Branstine is on the court, however, the main concern is winning. And winning is just what she did against Lin Baijing of Australia when she put together a hard fought 75 46 63 second round win at the Australian Open on Tuesday.

Branstine is a native of Southern California where her Canadian mom, Carol, and American father, Bruce, live. But recently Branstine decided she would prefer to play under the Maple Leaf flag instead of the Stars and Stripes.

At the moment, the paperwork hasn’t been completed, but she’s already settled into the Canadian National Training Center in Montreal where she is living with a host family.

“I will be changing to Canada and it will be soon,” Branstine said. “Honestly, I think it was a better fit for my tennis. I really love the training there and the people. It’s a little bit smaller than the USA.

“My French is not so good yet, but I will learn, I’m trying to,” Branstine added. “It’s cold. I went from SoCal where it’s been hot and dry, to Montreal where in wintertime it’s so cold. It’s like -20 with blizzard snow. But I like it, it’s a good change.”

“I’m staying in a beautiful home and they’re treating me like gold,” she added, of her new home situation.

This was only the second Grand Slam tournament of Branstine’s junior career. She reached the singles quarterfinals at last year’s U.S. Open.

Branstine required two-minutes over the two-hour mark to record the win over Lin. In total, there were 26 break points chances in the match with Branstine breaking serve on five of 18 opportunities presented. She also posted 42 winners, but that was countered by 58 unforced errors.

"It wasn’t easy today,” Branstine said. “She’s a friend of mine and she was hitting some nice shots, but I figured it out at the end.

“I just love Australia,” she added, of her first visit. “This has been an amazing experience and I don’t want it to end yet.”

Re: The Juniors

I think I saw an ace down the middle at 187. Definitely saw a crazy wide angle serve at 160+.

Her footwork was getting worse and worse and the balls went more and more wild as she got more and more pissed off.

Re: The Juniors

What a mess Branstine when she loses control of her emotions. But when she's in control, she's like a Lucic-Baroni with the bad temper of Coco
There was a bad patch of a dozen games that she couldn't do anything right, (around 25 UE) because she was too mad at herself. Though what a great serve she has for her age. 180km/h already.

Re: The Juniors

Branstine surprised me with her little BH slice approach shots. She's better at slicing low balls back than i expected.

Good finishes at the net.

Lazy footwork sometimes. But holy cow she serves big. No trouble on serve at all. Lots of holds to 0 or 15 today.
