Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

Step by step return to old strength
04/27/16 Tennis Aargau
Despite an injury and a very short preparation, in Istanbul Stefanie Voegele scored her best result this season. For her first final at a WTA tournament, however, she still has to wait.

The number eight has brought no luck to Stefanie Voegele. At her eighth semi-final at WTA level last week in Istanbul, the 26-year-old from Aargau was forced to leave the place as loser and continues to wait for her Final breakthrough. It was as if the door to the final - at least on paper – was never so far open as in the Turkish capital: Her opponent, the local Cagla Buyukakcay was classified in ranking as number 118 in the world, still behind Vögele. “Of course I was disappointed that I did not reach the final again. Above all, I was not happy with my game. I lacked freshness and I was still a bit tired from the previous matches”, said Voegele.
That she was inhibited by the thought of her first Final or of the seven semifinals already lost, Vögele does not believe, however. "Of course I know that I've never won a semi-final at the WTA level. But it would be wasted energy to think that during the match. It is certainly not easy, this is simply hide, but in the semi-final in Istanbul that definitely was not the problem. In addition, I must say that my opponent has played really well."

Injury prevented Fed Cup participation
That Stefanie Voegele advanced at all to the last four in the Turkish capital, was unexpected. Even in the week before the tournament she was plagued by a groin injury she had suffered in her first round match in Katowice, Poland. “I was in great pain and could only start training again on the Thursday before the tournament in Istanbul”, said Voegele. This injury was also the reason why the 26-year-old had to cancel her participation in the Fed Cup semi-final match against the Czech Republic in place of the also injured Belinda Bencic of Leuggern. “The treatment was underway. It would have made no sense for the team to push with this injury”, Vögele is convinced.
A decision that has paid off. Despite the approximately one-week injury lay-off and consequent very short preparation time on her first clay tournament of the season in Istanbul Stefanie Vögele was able to record her best result this year with the semi-final foray. A sign that she is on the way to a final after an extremely difficult last season. “I am playing better, but above all I am going much, much better, personally” said Voegele. “I still need time to finally process the very hard period of life after the death of my father, but I now have enough energy again to fully focus on my tennis.

Going through the qualification
To return to the Top 100, not much is missing. In the current world rankings Stefanie Voegele is already back up to 105th position, A placement that would have been enough for direct qualification for the main draw of the French Open, but unfortunately the deadline was already the week before! Vögele will therefore have to take a detour through the qualification rounds at Bois de Boulogne. But after the many obstacles and setbacks in recent months, this little detour for Stefanie Voegele will not deter her from her continued step by step to fight back.

The eight WTA semi-finals of Stefanie Voegele
Portoroz, July 2009, lost to Sara Errani (WTA 38), 1:6, 2:6

Linz October 2013 lost to Ana Ivanovic (WTA 16), 4:6, 4:6
Luxembourg, in October 2013, lost to Annika Beck (WTA 57), 5:7, 0:1 where

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

Well, I was WRONG. Not omitted or snubbed from Fed Cup, but injured and unavailable. Remember that strapped thigh in Istanbul?

Read and enjoy. Our Steffi explains in full.

I'll also post my crack at an English translation.

In the main draw for next week's $100k ITF on the Côte d'Azur.

Nice! (if you pardon the pun).

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

Unlucky draw. Karo is playing like a champion at the moment. Wasn't as bad as the first set-and-a-half from Saturday night, but Karo had all the answers.

My German is pretty awful, but as much as I understood of the OCC, I liked what I heard.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but he told Stef to be much more aggressive, that she wasn't moving Karo around enough, and Karo playing inside the baseline, so she needed to try and put the ball at Karo's shoes.
Did I understand right?

Anyway, she tried, but frankly, everything she could do, Karo could do better.

Time to find a positive: Stef's serve is working again - high % of first serves in, a few aces, and when she cranked up her second serve, that worked too.

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

After a really good week in Istanbul, Stefi is up to #105 in the rankings, and is back up to #58 in the 2016 Race.

Putting Istanbul in perspective, it was a REALLY good tournament for her:
  1. Her first two wins were over players who went on to lift the doubles trophy.
  2. the win over Kucova was against the odds, and showed that she and her coach do their homework and work out how to beat an opponent next time.
  3. she was only beaten by the eventual champion, and even there, showed glimpses of what she can do.

Great stuff. Proud of her.

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

Lost 6-0 7-5.

Shockingly awful first set, Stefi uncharacteristically tentative, and gave Carla too many short balls to punish. At 6-0 3-0, it looked really ignominious.

But Stefi pulled herself together, played with much more aggression to win 5 of the next 7 games. And at 5-4 0-15 up, she had her chance.

But it was all, as the annoying commentator put it, too little too late.

I don't know what was in Stefi's head in that first set, but that was the disappointing thing - what might have been.

Anyway, Off to Prague to face Pliskova. The top 20 one, with the tattoos and the big serve. The one Stefi actually has a winning record against.

Viel Erfolg, Stefi!

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

Lovely screencap, and this time the on-court interviewer was prepared with a couple of proper, appropriate questions, and was rewarded with Stefi's 500-watt smile.

Hope I never meet Stefi; I would just turn to mush.

And her "game face" as I imagine Yanks call it:

Stefi allowed herself a smile after this win:

And a more restrained, I-mean-business-today smile before the game:
