I don't know the answer for sure. I'm going to guess that as long as you've signed a pro contract before you go to collect your check then you are ok.

But seriously, makes sense for her to turn pro. She's knocking on the top 100 now.
I thought that the rules at one point was that a player had to declare their status (amateur or pro) before the tournament. There was questions whether Mallory Burdette could claim her prize money at the US Open, which she was able to by declaring her professional status, but that was "after-the-fact".

The same applies here with Kenin, which I'm glad she is able to keep her prize money.

Has the rules changed where you can declare after the fact? or is it you can declare before the tournament is over? or is just the US Open that allows for this?

Sofia lost 5-7 2-6 to Maria Sharapova

She is a great fighter, has great footwork/movement and played some nice points
I like her game/groundstrokes, her attitude/fight and that she's not giving up
She can be a Top 100 player on WTA Tour for sure

Re: Sofia "Sonya" Kenin

I thought Sofia, kept up with Maria quite well at the baseline, just her serve needs work!

Best I've seen an amateur play against a top player in awhile.
She had some fight in her, not displaying nerves. Most amateur players are happy winning a few games, she almost took Maria to TB in 1st set.

Too bad she didn't turn pro, passing on $144,000 in prize money (when will these Top Americans learn to just do it and turn pro, not play the waiting game and lose out on that prize money).

She should be approaching #110 in the rankings...

Impressive win over Jennifer Brady to advance to SF in Sacramento 60k, where she is defending champion.

Closing in on Top 150
