It was not so much the MP that set off my rant, just to be clear. Not hitting a bad toss is such an ingrained habit that it takes quite a while to un-learn it. It was unfortunate that it happened on MP, of course, but that's what the IPTL gets for changing the rules so much.

IMO, the main problem was that she came unprepared. I think if she had played some practice matches, heard the shot clock and gotten used to the pacing, then she would have been less confused and less rushed. I don't know if that's her own fault or the team failed her, but I just think it was totally preventable. That's why it bugs me.

Standings. The teams get 3 points for a win, 1 point if they lose with but win at least 20 games (so-called bonus point), and 0 points otherwise.

First match: Kiki lost 1-6 to Hingis, and in mixed doubles she only got their losing score up to 19.

I see a freight flight to Poland in her near future.

A fitting way to end the match.

Thanks for sharing.

Re: Kiki Bertens

Facepalm. FACEPALM!!!, I tell you.

Urgh.

Kiki lead Flipper 4-2 and 5-3, but lost her service game at 5-4 (then 5-5). And then she lost the Shoot Out (like a TB) 3-7. She lost MP because she tossed the ball but did not hit it. (IPTL rules).

Like I said in the chat thread, the fast face of play causes the players to stress. Kiki constantly looked like she needed 10 more seconds to get mentally ready. And the different IPTL rules are sometimes confusing. But smart people, EVIL GENIUSES like Flipper, who have actually bothered to learn and understand the rules, just deal with it a lot better. Flipper understood the format and was always aware of what was happening, while Kiki looked like a confused cow out there.

There is no women's doubles in IPTL. She'll probably play singles in Singapore, replacing Kiki. Maybe also mixed. I'm also not sure Serena will play in Hyderabad. I got the schedule from the IPTL website, but it's not totally reliable. E.g. they still had Bouchard on the schedule even if Flipkens was playing.

Re: Kiki Bertens

Pre-Aussie schedule, Kiki and Johanna.

Auckland
#22 (5th) Kiki Bertens
...
#50 (11th) Johanna Larsson

Hobart
#22 (1st) Kiki Bertens
...
#50 (11th) Johanna Larsson

They're probably looking to capitalise on their Linz-Lux doubles double.

(Unfortunately Johanna does not know the first thing about capitalising on anything).

Re: Kiki Bertens

Full result. She lost to Hingis in singles, but beat her in doubles. Because obviously. 🙃🙃

Re: Kiki Bertens

Am told Kirsten Flipkens will replace Bouchard, who was a no-show.

(Does that girl have an RSVP problem!?)

Re: Kiki Bertens

Lost 1-6. Someone will be put on the next freight flight back to Poland. (She can walk home from there, punishment).
