Mr.Sparkle Mestache's serve is not particularly threatening (even though it takes her about a year to prepare for it) so Laura has a good opportunity to get a quick win as long as she keeps serving well herself. She just has to watch out for Mestache's dropshots and slices.

I dunno if it's just me but I got the impression in their last match that Mestache doesn't like Laura very much. But perhaps she was just annoyed at the match as everything was going Laura's way.

Watson will be on this circuit shortly unless she goes deep in Monterrey

R1: Marcinkevica/Robson def. [2] Kalinskaya/Kuncikova 6-3 5-7 10-7

K&K were a double break down early in the 2nd set. Laura and Diana had three match points at 5-3* but were unable to convert. They then lost the next four games and the set.

Anna and Lenka got an early lead in the match tiebreak but then Laura and Diana won six points in a row to stamp their authority on it.

I don't believe in such nonsense. Anyway, she won, albeit losing the second set. Well done Laura and best of luck for the next match.

Yes Laura was a break up at the start of the second and third sets. In fact in the 3rd she was up 2-0 40-0 and lost that game.

But from 2-3* Laura won the next four games to finish the match. Not only that but she managed to fight back from 0-40 down in the seventh game and saved six break points along the way to the finish.

So while there were some definite wobbles in the middle of the match she stayed strong at the end.

Probably best if we ignore the serve stats

Encouraging that Laura toughed this out though, even if Shinikova has been in shaky form of late. Laura has now won a match at her last 5 events - slow progress but still better than before

Pierre. Laura!! A win!

Was rolling until 6-1 2-1 when seemingly the wheels fell off and all of a sudden it was one set all.

She went down a break in the third set 3-2, which is when I thought it was over. Then Laura roared back to win 4 games in a row! Was clearly nervous serving out the match and had trouble, but got over the line in the end!

Very pleased with that. Great to see the fight. Will try and find some video of the match online if there is any.
