- She could win some constructed points.
- She could break Serena, and she had more occasions for that. (This was my secret hope! ) (Of course, Serena's errors were also needed for that.)
- If she made less unforced errors (<== resulted from her nerves), she could have done it a little even better.
- Tactically, she should have played a more aggressive tennis - but compared to her standards, Nicole was brave and aggressive, she was fighting, and she was beautiful on the court! Well done!

Re: Nicole Gibbs

6-1 Serena leads without breaking a sweat... I do believe her 2nd serve is faster than Nicole's 1st serve, especially given that Nicole is 2-3 steps behind the baseline.

Update: Nicole has officially broken the Serena serve!!!

A little clip from Nicole's press conference on facing Serena:

Re: Nicole Gibbs

I'm mad that Nicole finally makes third round here only to get Serena.

I only wanted to say that I'm personally SURE that Serena will NOT immediately kill Gibbsy with her power. Instead, she'll happily going to play a chess-like tennis (controlled by intelligent shot selection and court positioning). She's going to use her power (and aces) only if it turns out to be necessary, or if she wants to finish the match as soon as possible. Soooo, our Stanford girl will possibly have the chance to taste the on court thinking of the living legend. There is NOTHING to be afraid of this match, Nicole can learn a lot if she will be pro-active on the court.
Yes, I've seen Serena do that, especially against a fellow American.

Her defense works against even powered players, but not the likes of a top 20 player or the GOAT!!!

I wish Nicole can play like she started out against Pennetta in 2014 US Open, where she was on fire for the first 4 games. Maybe she has a chance of making it look respectable. Even if she loses, a 3rd round at AO is respectable.

P.S.: for short moments Falconi was attacking well. But mostly she made too many errors. I don't know her to have a clue what could be the source of these errors.

Seriously, Nicole's year didn't start well so I'm so pleased she's into R3. Plays someone called Serena Williams next.

Re: Nicole Gibbs

Sometimes in the controlling seat Gibbsy played nicely, while at other times she was a little wasteful. Falconi helped her with quite many errors.

Gibbsy had a group of supporters on the standing, seemed a little drunky ...

Re: Nicole Gibbs

Most of the players I'm looking out for at the AO have had a really bad time so I'm super pleased to see Gibbsy knocking out a seed in R1.

She faces Irina Falconi next and has a 3-0 winning record.
