She's never going to be consistent, is she? Even on her best surface. And in her late twenties, you do start wondering how many more good runs she has in her. At this point, every second round bombing out of a slam really hurts.
If you look back at her career from 2004 you see that actually this is not an unusual thing. Every year she plays like 26 tournaments and loses early at 20 of them. It is just that she has had some good weeks here and there that have allowed her to stay in the top 20. This gives the illusion of someone who is consistant but actually her results are consistant only in that she loses early at most tournaments.

Couldn't watch but looking at the stats, Lucic played a great match with 33-11. What can you do against that? I had a bad feeling about this one when I saw her final set stats againt Panova. Grass is the one surface her games works very well on. She barely lost to eventual QF Cibulkova last year.

As for Marion, well the second serve in this loss and her French Open loss has just been beyond Double digits in double faults both times. Don't really understand it given how well she served in Eastbourne but whatever.

2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd round are her current slams stats. Really needs to do something big at the US. At least she shouldn't show up exhausted there like she has the last two years.

Thankfully I'm not as emotionally invested in tennis as I used to be

To be a bit more optimistic, she was helped to her career best ranking by reaching the semis of Roland Garros last year. So her total lack of consistency includes randomly winning when nobody expects it. Here's hoping, lol.

Re: Grass (finally)

Marion needs to fix that serve and be more aggressive this time last year her serve was nothing short of amazing and today she could barely get a first serve in when Marion serves badly she loses all rhythm, and she needs rhythm in her game, and then on top of that she had to play Lucic at her best which is unlucky i guess Marion will keep fighting obviously but before the serve is fixed she will have no confidence in her groundstrokes. very messy match today but as soon as Marion drops out of the top10 and has no points to defend, that's hopefully when she can relax and play better tennis. i'm still hopeful that she can have a good few months after this...

Re: Grass (finally)

I just can't take this, I don't even want to watch any more of Wimbledon now I'm so upset.

After a hellish clay court season this was supposed to be 3 weeks of awesome.

I've not been this pissed off with a loss in LONG time.

Re: Grass (finally)

Cant help but feel if this is the start of her fall to mediocracy like JJ last year. The tournaments in the U.S. will tell a lot. I know Lucic used to be good, but when was the last time she beat anybody in the top 30, nevermind the top 10? Losing to a qualifier on apparently her favourite surface... oof. That choke last week was bad but this was worse.

Re: Grass (finally)

time to panic

to me, her new serve motion is causing the problems, she has played shit ever since she changed it (clay onwards)

Re: Grass (finally)

Absolutely awful. If she is the level shes going to be at from now on, shes not going to even be top 20. She doesnt deserve to be top 10 anymore.

Re: Grass (finally)

Wozniacki out so Marion is the favourite to make the QF... Shes screwed up easy draws at slams before though so I just hope she takes it one match at a time.
