Re: Marina Erakovic Cheering Thread

I live for JJ-Marina Honestly I think Marina will get into a winning position then either close it out or choke horribly That's her Wimbledon script.

R3 is almost certainly between the two of them. Then CSN on grass or Gasparyan for R4. It's a very workable draw.

@Spencer. I feel like we are her only stans anymore

Re: Marina Erakovic Cheering Thread

She got into the Q spot against Falconi, which the winner of that will face JJ or Voegele

Let's get that JJ Marina R2 match

Re: Marina Erakovic Cheering Thread

Marina qualifies for Wimbledon!

QR1 def. Gonçalves 64 63
QR2 def. Ula Radwanska 64 62
FQR def. (11) Kromacheva 76(5) 63

Hopefully she can avoid Serena in R1

I want her to fall into the Q spot next to JJ. If they both win R1 they will face each other. Always wanted to see a JJ Marina match up. On grass no less

Re: Marina Erakovic Cheering Thread

Quick update.

Marina lost to Minella 5-7 4-6 Minella played well and won the title, but Marina missed a bunch of opportunities.

Then withdrew from s'Hertogenbosch for basically no reason Played Mallorca and beat Urzula R 6-3 6-2 in QR1 and lost to Hozumi in 3 sets in QR2

So a weird Wimbledon lead-up from her to say the least, and not ideal.

However she has won her first qualifying round at Wimbledon (finally won a QR1 at a slam ) 6-4 6-3 vs Goncalves, who is a decent grass-courter. Now faces Urzula again, and you'd think that she'd routine her again, given she did it a week ago on the same surface, but I'm really not that confident

If she can pass that, very winnable QFR vs Mitu or Khromacheva. Marina is not playing doubles Q or MD Was hoping she could have paired up with Laura or Heather for a MDWC or played with someone for Q, but whatever. Marina has been neglecting doubles for a while now.

Re: Marina Erakovic Cheering Thread

I double checked in the Bol thread, and it should be good, at worst case she'd play two Q matches in a day, and tbh I'd prefer that given how she did in Madrid and Birmingham last year

Minella's game is just so streaky though. I find it hard to see her beating Marina, even on this surface. And Lepchenko is a horror show on clay, she randomly peaked Nurnberg, but Minella barely edging her out on red clay is not really a big indicator. I think Vickery is a better player atm on red clay than all three of them.

Another plot twist, I think Konjuh needs a final for an Olympic spot. She won't lose to Mrdeza in the QF, so I'd say Marina is only chance of saving whoever Konjuh would bump out of the Olympics. I wouldn't give Marina a big chance against Konjuh on this surface, where she has a) Olympic hopes on the match and b) a nice slow surface where she has time to set up her shots.

Re: Marina Erakovic Cheering Thread

Minella randomly taking out Meldoniumchenko in 3 sets is scary... Varvs played well to make Nurnberg QF I forget how she did in RG though.

Minella could randomly PEAK in Bol and Marina could be

Hopefully she makes it to the Ricoh Open

Re: Marina Erakovic Cheering Thread

After her great Rabat run, Marina kind of flopped to Kania in a 100K, then lost a tight one to Zanevska in RG QR1.

Zanevska has a good game for clay though and eventually qualified, so not a bad loss. Marina is now playing WTA 125K Bol, back in Croatia, and is into the QF, after beating 6th seed Nara in the first round (Nara retired at 3-3 ) and then edging Sachia Vickery 6-4 6-4, which a pretty good win, given it's on arguably Vickery's best surface. Marina was quite clutch and was only broken once the whole match

QF is against Minella. Mandy is certainly not the player she was a few years ago, and tbh has never been that good, but she did beat Marina on red clay in Cali, in their only meeting in 2012 (that was when Marina played Bogota and Cali as #1 seed and lost early in both )

Marina has vastly improved her clay game since then, and ditched the coach that wasn't developing her clay game. Minella has glaring weaknesses throughout her game and even though it's on Mandy's best surface, Marina really should win.

Only trouble is that if Marina gets to the final, she might miss s'Hertogenbosch, as it starts the day after. Croatia is fairly close to the Nertherlands, so if that's the case Marina should be able to grab a quick flight over. Grass is definitely priority here for Marina, a few points to defend and a lot to make up.

Marina will likely be a low seed at Wimbledon Q. Of course, if she does well over the grass season, maybe plays one of the ITFs, she could even get a MDWC.

Re: Marina Erakovic Cheering Thread

I only managed to catch the first set of the match. I was hoping Marina could make a bit more of a game of it but Timea is just too crafty on clay. Those drop shots were insane and so well disguised, even someone with better movement than Marina would have struggled!

All in all though it has been a fantastic week and Marina has that result we were hoping for that would be a lightening rod for her confidence and march back up the rankings. Like The Walking Bye says she has a much more versatile game now than a few years ago and it is showing in her results.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how she progresses in the next two months. I'll be at the first two days of Roland Garros this year so she better qualify

Re: Marina Erakovic Cheering Thread

Inside top 130, Madrid results still to come though. If some qualies girls do well she could drop a little bit.

Still, a great week, did so well, and as NZTennisFan said, she has evolved to create an awesome clay game! She had the pieces, good topspin FH, ability to take balls on the rise behind the baseline, solid serve and great fitness/stamina. Just putting it together now

So yeah, awesome week! Had such little expectations, would have been happy with her qualifying, and she nearly didn't do that - so a final is a massive surprise and tbh I'm not too bothered at all by the simple loss. Her real win was in the SF, at least to me.

26 16

Great week for Marina. She should be inside top 130 right? IDK how many points she actually is gaining today

Re: Marina Erakovic Cheering Thread

Yeah she could be in MD in Cagnes - as she isn't in Q draw but hasn't withdrawn. I'm not sure about the rule but I reckon there's a decent chance we won't even see her till RG. However I'd bet she plays either Cagnes or Trnava for some matches before RG.

Re: Marina Erakovic Cheering Thread

Also I'm wondering what this great runs means for her schedule for the next few weeks.

I read in a news article that she was planning on playing an ITF in France next week before having a week's training before French Open qualifying. So that is Cagnes Sur Mur 100K next week and I guess she is thinking of withdrawing from the 100K in Slovakia the week after.

Now she's in the final in Rabat will she even want to play next week given she's played 8 days in a row? She would need a special exempt to play in the main draw but is she even eligible for one? I think the rule only applies to tournaments in the same continent

Re: Marina Erakovic Cheering Thread

I'm stoked to see Marina is back in business and this thread is back too

She really is no longer a one trick pony who can only do damage indoors or on grass. She is a decent clay court player now even if it isn't her favourite surface ( 4 x ITF tournament wins, semi in Budapest, 3rd round at RG and now final in Rabat from qualifying!)

Beating Timea in the final will be a huge task. This is her favourite surface and she's top 15 for a reason. Sometimes strange things can happen in finals (who predicted Angie would beat Serena in the AO final this year ) so I'm still holding out hope!
