Re: Kangoo-Marion in Australia!

Marion. The Australian might not be her favourite tournament, with the heat and everything, but if she wants to be top player, she's got to stop losing in first rounds. In a weird sense, it's good if she was crying, because it shows that it means a lot to her to not go out like this... although I would hate to see her cry.

I'm not even sure that the surface is a good excuse, considering that she was in a good position to win the match. Oh well, let's just hope she does well in the rest of 2008.

Re: Kangoo-Marion in Australia!

She sounds quite philosophical and reasonable about the defeat. Not devastated. Yes she would have preffered to have gone deeper in the tournament, but like she explains, A0 is her weakest slam historically.

Someone in GM said M was crying. But hey, the mean-spirited rubbish they say in GM against M. Stuff the Anti-Marion's

Thank you Iceland for the translation.

Re: Kangoo-Marion in Australia!

"Honestly, I had the impression of having worked a lot this winter, so I am obviously disappointed. But even in the juniors, I never managed to do well here : the conditions don't suit me. I feel very frustrated because I was in control of the match leading one set & one break. But I knew it was going to be a difficult match because Sofia and I know each other for a long time! We play the juniors together, one day, I was winning, the other, I was losing, it always went into tough matches. The surface which is slow here doesn't advantage me, for sure. I do think it's worse than ever, the balls even went bigger! It was not possible for me to win on this surface against a girl who is playing as well as she does."

I heard Marion's interview as well on the fft's website, she had a very low & sad voice

Skippy

It's dissapointing because she had a good record against Ardvisson on hard. However AO always was Marion's weakest slam. The plexicushion may have added to things.

If I may, i'd like to quote your insightful comments when I blog later today.

Re: Kangoo-Marion in Australia!

Marion lost 67 64 63 to Arvidsson after having led 76 *43. I watch the match and it's not difficult to see the reason why she lost. It's the damn surface that slows down everything, it just advantages players using topspin as Arvidsson does. Marion's flat strokes were not decisive at all and Sofia always found the right shot to win long rallies. Yet Marion has to learn from this, her serve was not working at all -she served 2nd serves all the time-, she was in the court even to return a first serve (it was not working that great in the 3rd set when she got tired) & her physical condition is not better than last year.
A bit disappointing, but Marion is not the kind of girl that plays well on slow surface. It has given the same bad result as in Stuttgart & Moscow.
I hope she finds some confidence for the tournaments on hard where she can do very well.

Marion . But change your methods please!

I think lots of people mistake her natural body shape for being unfit. But I really like her body shape. Our Marion is such a cutie.

It sucks that she's playing Sofia though, I'm kind of a fan of her. I don't want either of them to lose. Oh well, have to go with Marion though, obviously!

Actually, come to think of it, they both have a similar body shape... but I think that's just coincidence.

Re: Kangoo-Marion in Australia!

I will try to be positive (still I can't overlook the fact that a slow surface doesn't suit Marion's game ^^')! Allez Marion, let's reach the 4th round in every Grand Slam!!

Re: Kangoo-Marion in Australia!

good luck Marion
I'm not worried that she'll reach the 4th round, her draw is decent
hopefully she'll deal well with the new surface
Allez!

Re: Kangoo-Marion in Australia!

Reading comments from several players, they are all making two observations, 1). The new surface is slower, 2). The new ball is heavier.

Now, whether they mean it's slower than the old surface, or just slower than they anticipated the new surface would be.. I cant say for sure. Probably the former.

Some players commented that a heavier ball would suit the stronger player.

Marion doesnt hit 120mph fs. BUT she has clearly bulked and powered up in the past year or so.

I know that Marion's build is the subject of unending controversy and criticism. But the fact is that when you look at the average of her results last year. She is an improved player. She is making the most of her genes and physique. You Go Girl!!

Iceland, dont be pessimistic mate. McWilliams is right. She be lookin to beat dem innit.

Re: Kangoo-Marion in Australia!

i think it's a pretty good draw, no? she can't expect easier. if she's to remain top10 she's gonna have to beat the likes of li (possible 3rd round)

Re: Kangoo-Marion in Australia!

Domachowska entered Marion's part of the draw as a qualifier , she could be her R2 opponent. I don't like this at all .
