slk45 Fairly quiet in here. Where are the Baltic girls?

I met Lina Stanciute last February at the Memphis tournament; she won her 1R qualifier, but lost in the 2R. A very nice girl.

Toward the end of the week, she told me she was going to play in the 50K at St. Paul, MN. I told her I'd try to see one of her matches there, but unfortunately she lost in the 1R there on Sunday, and I didn't arrive till Monday, and she'd already left. I hope she plays Memphis this year again; if so, I'll see her there.

We don't hear much from the Baltic states here in the US. If they can get a breakthrough, you'll probably see more activity here. I'm sure most people don't know who they are at this point. You have to be a pretty good tennis junkie to pick up on their names.

Grachka *revives thread*

Maret has been probably the busiest of the Baltic Babes With an Australian programme. She reached the second qualifying round in Canberra, defeating Obata before falling to Kloesel . She did the same at AO Qualies beating McCain and then falling to Gubacsi. At the 75K Ortisei she won through to the QF before falling to top seed Strycova.

Kaia still injured

Margit is almost past Kaia in the rankings. She has only played one tournament this year, falling in the first round of 25K Sunderland to Sakowicz. She won today though in Redbridge, although her victim escapes me

Anet Kaasik seems to have disappeared this year also.

Onto Lithuania, Lina Stanciute seems to be the only active Lithuanian at the moment . She lost to Natalie Grandin in first rond of 25K Rockford in three sets, but has qualified for 75K Midland this week and plays her first round match tonight!

Aurelija has lost her ranking after her abortive comeback at the end of last year Any news on that front?

Egle Petrauskaite received a wildcard into the qualies of the Miami 10K, losing 57 16 to Inoue in the first round. It was her first tour match since August 2003.

The Latvians: Liga is continuing her horrendous form I can't remember when i last saw that she had won . She is entering loads of high tiered events and never winning . This continued when she was in the Tier I Qualifying draw in the Pan Pacific, losing 16 06 to Mayumi Yamamoto.

Irina Kuzmina entered a couple of 10Ks in Britain recently, winning one match in Tipton against Claire Ricketts, but lost in the second round and then in the first round of Hull to Vranceau. She then edged out Fong in Q1 of Sunderland 25K, but fell to Llewellyn in the second round.

Nothing from Anzela so far in 2005

Get better soon Latvians!

Thats about it Let's hope it gets better soon, and good luck Margit and Lina this week!

Grachka Update!

Maret has had a decent return to form from Poitiers, winning three rounds of Q and beating Bychkova in R1 of the maindraw, before pushing Mikaelian to a close three-setter.

Kaia found it tough coming back from injury and hasn't played since August, when she lost to Cho and Bielen-Zarska

Lina won a $25K in Lafayette but has since stalled in form

Aurelija finally returned to competition but is not exactly setting the world alight. She has struggled in $10K qualies and may find it a bit longer to get back in the swing of things.

Both Irina Cybina and Juliya Gotovskyte have obtained rankings

Irina Kuzmina has slipped into #2 in the Latvian rankings ahead of Anzela. Liga and Anzela's form has slipped considerably.

Grachka Margit is tearing up the British Challengers at the moment! She won a tough Glasgow tournament and is looking unstoppable in Sunderland this week.

Anzela also had a better tournament recently, reaching her first $25K QF

Edita Liachoviciute must have retired
