End of season awards

Posted Mar 9th, 2008 at 09:00 PM by

The speedskating season officially ended today
It did end well, with medals for my faves on all distances but I'm still sad I have to wait till (probably) the last weekend of october now.

Anyway, end of the season means awards! And I will do that my way
Here they are:

Skater of the year:
In random order: Sven Kramer, Jeremy Wotherspoon, Jenny Wolf

Surprise of the year:
1. Pekka Koskela skates WR 1000m
2. Paulien van Deutekom wins WCh allround
3. Enrico Fabris beats Kramer and skates WR 5km
Honourable mentions: Erben Wennemars skates WR 1500m & Kyou-Hyuk Lee wins WCh sprint again

Breakthrough of the year:
Paulien van Deutekom
Dutch honourable mentions: Diane Valkenburg, Marrit Leenstra, Ben Jongejan, Lars Elgersma, Annette Gerritsen, Wouter Olde Heuvel

Struggle of the year:
1. Maren Haugli
2. Ireen Wüst
3. Erben Wennemars & Pekka Koskela, post WR

Comeback of the year:
Jeremy Wotherspoon

Lee of the year
1. Kyou-Hyuk
2. Kang-Seok
3. Sang-Hwa

Hide-and-seek of the year:
1. Anni Friesinger
2. Pekka Koskela
3. Beixing Wang

Jelena Jankovic of the year (or: can I skate any more races anywhere?)
Paulien van Deutekom & Christine Nesbitt

Scandal of the year:
Calgary time measurement

Hype of the year:
Finishing with your skate on the ice, and corrected times, after Calgary world cup

Non WR-race of the year:
1. Paulien van Deutekom, 3km, WCh allround, Berlin (impressive)
2. Kramer vs Hedrick, 10km, WSD, Nagano (funny)
3. All 500m races by Jenny Wolf

Close to a mark:
1. WR 1000m men: 1.07,00
2. WR 500m women: 37,02
3. WR 500m men: 34,03

Entertainer of the year:
Mika Poutala

Fall of the year:
Jan Bos at WCh sprint

I have never heard of Beixing Wang before see this aWards :p
I live in southwest of China. This year the city has snow for the first time in 17 years.
The results of a nationwide survey, show that the most popular surname is Kim and the 2nd is Lee in Korea.
In China most popular is Wang, the second is Lee too :boxing:
