Again I learned about this (very old) ballad by reading a few stanzas of it in a novel... and I was fascinated. I did find out that “Bedlam” refers to “The Bethlehem Royal Hospital of London”, which is the world's oldest psychiatric hospital - which makes a “Tom O'Bedlam” an ex-patient there... but I found a site where English people wre asking each other what this or that could possibly mean .
