Viva la Doha!

The Qatar Total Open kicks off this week in Doha!!! While tennis has been relatively quiet since the Australian Open (with the exception of Fed Cup) , this week marks the reemergence of a host of stars. While Ana Ivanovic, Venus Williams, and Maria Sharapova are sure to be the favorites to hold the trophy up at the end of the week, they better be watchful of the other contenders in this tournament. With a top heavy draw only one of the three that I previously mentioned can get to the final to face someone among the likes of Svetlana Kuznetsova, Jelena Jankovic or even Agnes Szavay. This will be sure to be the most compelling tournament since the Australian Open and will hopefully live up to our expectations.
Not only will the ranking points that the winner receives in this Tier I tournament be extremely appealing, but the almost 500,000 dollars as well.
Now I will analyze some of the players chances.

Ana Ivanovic
Ana will be the top seed at this tournament and is very determined to win. She arrived a full week early to get used to the conditions that she will be playing in. She could have a potential meeting with Maria Sharapova in the semifinals who she lost to in the Australian Open. Look for Ana to get to at least the quarters versus Venus Williams.

Maria Sharapova
Maria is fresh off her wins from Australia to Israel in Fed Cup. She is full of confidence and most would say the one to beat. I expect Maria to make the semifinals where she will face Venus for a spot in the final. The winner of the top half of the draw is sure to win the tournament.

Venus Williams
Venus hasn't played since her loss in the quarterfinals to Ana Ivanovic at the Australian Open. She should be fully rested and I expect her to do well. Venus will want to take revenge on Ana in the quarterfinals and then look to give Maria her first loss of the regular season as she did in exhibition play. Venus is my pick to win the title.

Jelena Jankovic
Finally, we have Jelena. Jelena, who previously suffered from a barrage of injuries, is in the bottom half of the draw. Her injuries seem to always hinder her at grandslams and important tournaments. Although this tournament is not as important as others, I still don't expect Jelena to do well here. I can see her losing early to her standards either to Agnes Svazay, or Li Na.

Dark Horses
These days we never know what to expect from Amelie Mauresmo or even Anna Chakvetadze. Both can show up on form or the complete opposite. I expect Li Na, Agnes Svazay and possibly Shuai Peng to do well here. Another player who can do well here is Svetlana Kuznetsova. If she can get pass Peng than I expect her to make it to at least the semis.

Well, that's my analysis for the Qatar Total Open.
