at the french, there is usually a surprise player that gets to the QF. (eg: Marta Marrero, Petra Mandula)
who do you think it could be this year?

Perhaps Daniela Hantuchova? She did so well @ the Oz. Of course, I have no idea how good on clay she might be.
Venus Williams? Even though, she is currently the world no.2, she has never played well at the French with her best result coming in 2000 with a quarterfinal showing. I would love to see Venus go all the way there.
Lindsay Davenport? She made the quarters several years ago, but had a first round loss in 2000 and didn't play last year. I would live to see Davenport do well at the French.

Virginie Razzano maybe? She tends to do well in the Slams but was a little unlucky to draw Hingis first round in Oz.

None of the players mentioned yet. Since 1999, there's always been a surprise QUALIFIER in the QFs (Barbara Schwartz, Marta Marrero, Petra Mandula), and none of these will be either surprises or qualifiers. And the point is that it'll be a surprise, so we don't know yet. :p Maybe Svetlana Kuznetsova or Kaia Kanepi?

I'm sorry but I don't think about Razzano, I believ maybe surprises will be more difficult, the surprise would be if some other player can get quarters with the horrible com[etence is being right now.
The only possibility for this is Marta Marrero again, but this time defeating Henin in the Final!!! :bounce:
