Roby had a terrific ending to 2003 and is quickly closing on the Top 100. She made the final round of qualifying in Auckland but lost in first round of qualies in Sydney.

Best of luck next week in Melbourne, Sweetie!

Roby is up to her carrer best nr 103 in tha rankings this week, great result, altough I really was expecting her to reach the top 100.

Oh well, we need to wait another couple of weeks, when Wimbledon will be over.

Roby won her second round match today against Osterloh, one to go before another GS main draw :D

With all the other italians struggling (I have a feeling even Silvia and Francesca will not last long in London this year  Silvia has millions of points to defend, but her game is fading these last few weeks), Roby is the only one, in sgls and dbls, that can give us something to cheer for !!! go girl !!! :worship:

GoSandrine
Jun 17th, 2004, 01:32 AM
I miscalculated :o

But I agree with you Gabriel that Roby should break Top 100 here. She's got clay court specialist Nuria Llagostera next and Roby should prevail on her favorite surface to gain a qualifier spot in the main draw. Even if she loses I would anticipate someone will withdraw and she'd get in as a Lucky Loser anyways.

I hope you're wrong about Silvia and Francesca. I think quarterfinals are a long shot (although last year Silvia certainly surprised) but third and fourth rounds are more realisitc goals on this surface.

I'm really excited about Roby though. Her wins last week over quality opponents prove she's got the mettle to play with the top players especially on the lawn where she can utilize her net prowess and slice to her advantage.

Forza Roberta!!! :hearts:

Well Roby will have to hope for a lucky loser spot. She melted after being up 6-2, 4-2 to lose 6-2, 6-7(2), 1-6.

From following the scoring thread it looked like she had two or three match points in the second but couldn't close, the second match in row she's been up mps but lost (previous was to Anne Kremer in Birmingham). It's odd because she came from mp down to beat Nathalie Dechy the match before that.

Not to wish injury on anyone but I hope a singles spot opens up for her. I really think she can win a couple main draw matches here if she relaxes instead of getting tight when the matches wind down.

She teams with Emmanuelle in doubles as the 16th seeds.

Roby will play Palermo, I guess...she should get in the MD with her ranking.

I would love to see her entering steadily the top 100 in singles and top 20 in doubles by the end of the year. I really believe she can still improve her game by 30% and rise in the rankings, she has a potential to be at least top 50 in singles, but she needs to work a lot...hopefully Sandrine and Vittorio will stick with her and help her ....Roby seems lost without them at her side :wavey:

Marko, I believe they froze the entires a few weeks ago when Roby was ranked 106 so she missed by three spots. To my knowledge Kim is the only withdrawal so two more will have to in order for her to gain direct entry. I just hope her foot injury is healing and she won't reinjure in Athens.

Speaking of Athens, Roby and Tathiana have drawn Nicole Pratt and Samantha Stosur in doubles. Not sure how healthy Roby and Tati are but hopefully they can get through their first round match and pick up some steam. Forza!!! :hearts:

I got to see the match and Roby fought well. She has really improved her serve and is much more steady. A couple rough spots (she lost a 4-2 first set lead and had a rough patch up 4-1 in the second) but she closed well.

I was there. So many missed chances in that first set! :fiery:

Roby hit some beautiful shots but her serve and shotmaking was amazing and self-destructive at the same time.

The second set was a disaster. Roby played with no hope. She favored her foot after her final qualifying match so I suspect she didn't think she could battle like that again and win against the likes of Patty. Still, very disappointing that she didn't play with any gumption after losing the first.

Q. Any experience playing Roberta Vinci before?

KIM CLIJSTERS: "No. I grew up playing with her in Juniors a little bit and Under‑14s. I cannot really remember playing her that often. But I'm sure in Juniors I practiced with her a couple of times. Obviously, I saw her play last week in Eastbourne, where she played really well. She's definitely a girl who plays a really good grass court game. She comes in, she mixes her game up a lot, and she hits a good slice, great volleys.

So I think I'll be running a lot to the net because she uses a dropshot quite a lot. It's going to be a completely different game than what I played today. It's a challenge to play against those kind of girls who just mix it up so much."

Be afraid Kimmie. Be very afraid  ;)

Getting to Know...
Roberta Vinci

For Roberta Vinci, the 2005 grass court season provided the breakthrough she was looking for. The 22-year-old from Italy stormed to the semifinals as a qualifier at Eastbourne with wins over world No.12 Vera Zvonareva and No.10 Anastasia Myskina, her career-first Top 10 win. She didnít stop there, ousting No.23 seed Ai Sugiyama for her first Grand Slam main draw match win en route to a third round finish at Wimbledon.

Vinci began her career playing mainly on the ITF Womenís Circuit, winning six singles titles, including two on grass, and eight doubles titles. She began making noise on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour back in 2001, making her Tour-level singles debut at the US Open, and pairing with Sandrine Testud for impressive doubles finishes, including a title run at Doha, finishing runner-up at Zurich, reaching the semifinals at the US Open and the quarterfinals at Roland Garros. Since then, she has reached two Tour semifinals, including the aforementioned run at Eastbourne, and has had more impressive results in doubles, including Tour finals in 2002 at Tokyo [Pan Pacific Open] and Dubai. She made her Top 100 debut in singles on June 20, 2004 after a third round finish at Birmingham, and this week moves up to a career-high ranking of No.58 after her run at the All-England Club.

WTATour.com caught up with Roberta at Wimbledon.

Where were you born, and where did you grow up?
I was born in Taranto, a medium-sized city in the south of Italy, near Bari and Brandisi. I lived there until I was 13 years old.

Tell us about your family. What do they do now, and do they play tennis or any other sports?
My father, Angelo, is an accountant, and my mother, Luisa, is a homemaker. I live with my 24-year-old brother, Francesco, who is studying Economics in Rome. My father plays some tennis.

How did you get started with tennis, and what was your earliest memory of playing tennis?
I started playing tennis when I was six years old, when my father introduced me to it for fun. Between then and when I was 13, I played mainly for fun, but began playing some tournaments. After I won the Italian 12-and-under championships, I realized that I was good enough to become a tennis player.

Tell us about your early coaching, as well as any support that you received.
When I was 13, I moved to Rome to train with the Italian Federation. I trained with several players, like Antonella Serra Zanetti. At that point, I started traveling the world and playing tournaments. When I was about 16, I realized that I could make a career out of tennis. My national program was very good and it was a good transition into professional tennis.

Other than tennis, what else did you enjoy doing as a child?
I liked playing other sports, like soccer, and I also like reading and listening to music.

Who were your tennis idols when you were growing up?
My idols were Martina Navratilova and Stefan Edberg for their serve-and-volley style, which I also like to play.

Tell us about your current coaching situation, and any off-court training that do you do.
Iím currently being coached by Roberto Meneschincheri. For off-court training, I work out in the gym and do lots of running.

What is the strongest memory of your tennis career to date?
My best memory is winning my first ITF Womenís Circuit singles title in Cuneo, Italy in 1999 (a $10,000 event).

What do you do in your free time away from the courts?
I like going shopping, especially when Iím at home in Italy, and sometimes when Iím traveling. I also like listening to music, and watching movies - my favorite movie is Gladiator, and my favorite actor is Tom Cruise.

What would you have done if you werenít a tennis player?
I have wanted to be a professional tennis player for as long as I can remember, so Iím not sure!

Is there anything in particular that has helped you achieve your recent impressive results?
My improved singles form of late is from my increased self-confidence and my improvement in training routines for singles.

Palermo, Italy (Sports Network) - Italian crowd favorite Roberta Vinci was among Monday's first-round winners at the $140,000 Palermo International.

The seventh-seeded Vinci came from behind to beat Slovakian Martina Sucha 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

One other first-round match saw Croat Jelena Kostanic overcome Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 on the red clay at Country Time Club. Kostanic will encounter Vinci in the second round.

This week's top seeds are Italians Silvia Farina Elia and Flavia Pennetta, who was last year's runner-up here to Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues.

By Barnaby Chesterman

LONDON, July 19 (Reuters) - In an age of tall, hard-serving, big-hitting tennis players, Roberta Vinci is a reminder of a different era.

Despite growing up in Rome and learning her trade on the European clay, Vinci is a superb player on grass, conjuring up images of a bygone age with her spin serves, deep sliced backhands, sneaks to the net and clever drop volleys.

There was a time when finesse, touch and technique were the pillars on which a player's game was built.

Jimmy Connors and carbon fibre rackets bulldozed that from the men's game, while Steffi Graf's forehand had a similar impact on the women's.

Since then, big hitters such as the Williams sisters, Jennifer Capriati, Lindsay Davenport and Maria Sharapova, have all but driven out the finer points of the game in favour of an all-out assault from the back of the court.

Not since Czech Jana Novotna in 1998 has a serve-and-volley player won the Wimbledon women's title.

Vinci hopes to change that. After reaching a career-high 58th in the world earlier this month, the Italian is aiming higher still.

"My ambition is to be number one," the 22-year-old Vinci said optimistically at a Fed Cup tie in the Czech Republic before adding with a touch of humility: "but I will be happy if I reach 25 or 30. I'm young, though, so I have time.

"I like to play serve and volley," she said. "I don't have the power to play big forehands and backhands from the back of the court so I prefer to play slowly and to go to the net. I like to play slice and to serve and volley off the first serve and even the second if the surface is fast."

The technique serves her well on grass. Vinci beat then-world number 12 Vera Zvonareva and number 10 Anastasia Myskina on grass at Eastbourne last month.

She ran out of steam in the semi-finals though, losing in three sets to Russian Vera Douchevina, after playing most of her quarter-final match on the same day because of rain delays.

WIMBLEDON HEROES

Vinci also enjoyed a measure of success at Wimbledon, winning two rounds before falling to former world number one Kim Clijsters of Belgium.

"She was too strong for me," admitted Vinci. "I was a little bit tense because I was playing on the Centre Court at Wimbledon but she played so well it was very difficult."

Not surprisingly, Vinci named two great Wimbledon champions as her heroes: Martina Navratilova and Stefan Edberg, both serve-and-volley players and both renowned for their touch and finesse at the net.

From an early age, Vinci, leaned towards a similar style and she quickly became known on the junior circuit for her unusual tactics.

"My father played tennis so I started when I was about six or seven and went to play with him. I did okay when I was young and people would always comment about my different style and compliment me on my touch. But this was always my natural game because I simply don't have the strength to battle from the baseline."

At 1.63 metres, Vinci is one of the smallest players on the circuit. In the world's top 60, only three women are shorter -- Spaniard Nuria Llagostera Vives, Israel's Anna Smashnova and American Jill Craybas.

Wimbledon champions of the past were small by today's standards. American Billie Jean King, who won her sixth title in 1975, was 1.64 metres, while Australian double champion Evonne Goolagong and American Chris Evert, three times a winner, both stood at 1.68.

By contrast, current champion Venus Williams is 1.85m tall, last year's winner Sharapova is 1.83m and 1999 victor Davenport stands at 1.89.

DOUBLES WIN

On Liberec's fast indoor surface, Vinci was blasted off court by the 1.81-m Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic in her Fed Cup singles earlier this month, after stepping in as a late replacement when team mate Flavia Pennetta fell ill.

Despite the loss, Vinci returned to win the doubles with Francesca Schiavone in straight sets and help Italy to triumph 3-2 in the play-off and stay in world group one.

"It was a pleasure to play with Roberta because she is a great doubles player," Schiavone said, while Czech captain Thomas Petera said of the Italians: "They played faultless doubles and Vinci in particular didn't miss a single ball."

Such compliments suggest that Vinci's easiest route to success might be in doubles.

Indeed, she was once ranked 12th in the world in doubles in partnership with France's Sandrine Testud.

Testud, however, quit the game to have a baby and Vinci has not found another regular partner, preferring to concentrate on improving her singles ranking.

"Last year I played a lot of doubles so it was a great thrill for me to play Fed Cup singles," said Vinci, who is back on clay this week in the Palermo International WTA tournament.

"I prefer to pay doubles but now I have my highest ever ranking in singles and I did well at Eastbourne and Wimbledon so I really want to concentrate on singles for now.

"There is a lot of money to be won playing doubles but my dream is to win Wimbledon in singles. I know it will be difficult but that is my dream and I will try."

Roberta played very poorly against Granville, partly because she hadn't arrived on site until SUnday night and didn't have time to practise until Monday morning. As well, Laura had already 2 matches under her belt, and was playing very well. Her net skills were not bad, but her slice was staying up, and her groundstrokes were nothing special. Laura kept Roberta back behind the baseline, and just waited for the error. Some games went to deuce, but overall it was a shame that Roberta looked so tired. Saturday she was still hitting, looking slightly better but weak, and was very friendly and spoke to me after my horrible attempt at Italian. Friendly player, who was smiling, and hopefully can do well in the future.

Roby lost the first thirteen points of the match but recovered to put up a battle and extend Amelie to over an hour. Too many double faults and she uncharacteristically netted several routine backhand volleys or she could have won a few more games.

She mixed some amazing shots with sloppy errors at inopportune times. A tough draw but good experience.

Good luck in doubles with Silvia.
