The singles draw for this event has something I don't believe I've seen before and don't understand. There are codes next to some of the player's names in the first round such as WC (wildcard) and Q (qualifiers). Three players, Ashley, Lee-Waters, and Vakulenko, have an 'X' next to their name. What does it mean? The link to the draw is:

Thanks in advance.

X means that the players got a Feed Up to the maindraw by winning a big challenger event.

Yes!

US$50,000 Pittsburg winner – Teryn Ashley
US$50,000 Girona winner – Julia Vakulenko
US$50,000 Palm Beach Gardens - Lee-Waters

cause they won, they got WC to the main draw :D

Thanks for the replies. Is this 'X' thing something new for '04? I don't recall seeing it in draws last year? Is it a new policy that applies to all WTA tournaments?

its also been handed out in previous years in Tier III/IV and V's but its not been noted by the X on the drawsheet but only on the Entry Lists.
