Silvia is seeded third in Canberra and has a decent draw. She won her opening round match against Lubomira Kurhajcova of Slovakia 6-2, 6-2 and plays compatriot Mara Santangelo in the second round. I saw Mara play Tax a few months back at the US Open and she has alot of promise. However, my heart and my mind tells me to go with the cagey veteran here...

Go Silvia :smoke:

Gotta luv Silvia cuz she's got her own "JR nickname" (Cream of Farina Elia, the official hot cereal of the WTA)! :D And GS, since you're such an Italo-fan, is Le Lyons Lioness Living in Roma with Vittorio a factor in your screenname? :p

Silvia can sow my oats anytime :lick:

And Roger, to answer your question, I've always liked Sandrine. I first saw her play Monica at the US Open in 96? and she really impressed me with her all court game and spunk. She was hitting winners all over the place and I remember the CBS announcers remarking wow this girl can really strike the ball.

So it's just a bizzare coincidence that I'm of Italian descent (my grandfather was born in Calabria) and she hooked up with an Italian and lives in Rome. What's even more bizzare is my grandfather was born in the same town as Vittorio (Cossenza)!!! :D

As far as I'm concerned Sandrine is as Italian as Silvia. ;)

And lost on a controversial overrule

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) -- Top-seeded Paola Suarez (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/112/) of Argentina won the Canberra Classic on Saturday, beating second-seeded Silvia Farina Elia (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/98/) of Italy 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5). The match ended in controversy when umpire John Blom overruled a linesman to call Farina Elia's ball out on match point. ``It was really close, but I saw it was out,'' Suarez said.

Another article, this one with quotes from Silvia...

CANBERRA, Australia (Ticker) - When Paola Suarez (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/112/) plays in next week's Australian Open, she'll know she has given her nerves a good workout.

Suarez saved five match points against third-seeded Silvia Farina Elia (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/98/) of Italy on Saturday to win the Canberra Women's Classic.

The second-seeded Argentine edged Farina Elia, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), in two hours, 36 minutes in the final of this $110,000 hardcourt event. She earned $16,000 for her fourth WTA Tour title.

"I am very happy to win," Suarez said. "It was very close and a great final. Today, I think I am lucky. We are very close and we both have chances; today it goes my way."

Suarez never before had beaten Farina Elia in three meetings, also having played a tight match at Wimbledon last year.

"I just tried to be more aggressive," Suarez said. "But it was a tough match, she is a great player and like at Wimbledon, today's match could go either way."

Farina Elia fell behind, 3-0, in the first set, but won six straight games to take the set.

Suarez bounced back in the second set, taking a 5-1 lead. Farina Elia pulled within, 4-5, before Suarez served out the second set to even the match.

Farina Elia broke serve in the sixth game and held for a 5-2 lead. Suarez saved one match point at 5-3 and four more in the tiebreaker. "She played great on the match points, I never really had a chance to try something different," Farina Elia said. "She played very aggressive on the big points - it was very tough."

Kim rallied past our Silvia 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. http://smileys.******************/cat/4_2_3.gif (http://www.******************/?partner=ZSzeb001)

A heartbreaking loss but you'd never know it judging by Silvia's post match comments. Macmillan, I hope you don't mind but I thought it was appropriate to post in our Silvia thread so I stole this from General Messages. ;)

"It's always tough playing Silvia because she doesn't give you any rhythm," said Clijsters. "Her slice shots force you to bend down all the time. I think it was a great match.

"I never thought I was out of it, even at 5-2 in the second set. If you think that way you should just walk to the net and shake hands," Clijsters added.

Farina Elia was naturally disappointed by the loss, but buoyed by the outstanding play she produced throughout the match.

"I think in the first two sets, this was the best tennis I've played in my career," said Farina Elia. "Even though I lost today, I feel I was the winner because of the way I played. It gives me a lot of confidence.

"I've learned a lot from the other times I've played against (Kim), and I used them in the match today. I tried to be more aggressive, which is the way I have to play if I want to stay at the top of the game."

NOW GO WIN THE DOUBLES DAMMIT! :fiery: :D

Silvia won 7-6 6-3 :D it's overall a good result, considering her form and the way Beltrame has been palying.

A semifinal is already a good achievement, will help Silvia afer the last disastrous weeks. Now a match against Molik, by far the 2 strongest players are meeting in SF....what a pity (Perebinys vs Kleinove the other side). I think Silvia will go down, Alicia has been impressive this week, but I will keep my fingers crossed, if Silvia wins, than maybe she can lift her trophy nr 4 here in Sweden  :hearts:

Hey guys!
I was actually in stockholm today and watched both semifinals. Silvia looked fine and I'm so impressed by her legmuscles, HUGE!!!...Well to the fact about how Silvia played today. She started of really well, both players had big problems in the beginning to hold their serve. Both had a couple of breakpoints and molik made the first break but silvia imideately broke back again. Nice variation from both players, with some great winners, slice, volley. Silvia moved really great but she had some difficulties to return Molik's big serves. That was what made the difference in this match. It seamed like everytime silvia had a breakpointopportunity(she had alot in the first set) Alicia came up with a huge serve or an ace. I was impressed by her serve today. Not much to say about the second set. Alicia raised her level a few step and started playing more agressive and Silvia had problems with the speed. She made everything she could, except she could have controlled her concentration a little bit better. She got frustrated in the second set. I say like this, she would probably have won quite easy against both the other semifinalists. She was inlucky. I really crossed my fingers for Silvia because I really wanted her to win. So now you guys nows a little bit better what happend out there.

sorry if I upset somebody. I did not mean to say that I WANT Silvia to retire, no way !!!! I have been following her career since the beginning, over 10 years ago....her retirement will kill me + will make me feel very old... ...
But she has been talking about it for the last 3 years, and this is the year I feel she will stop, because her results have not been so good lately, and it takes a lot of work to keep up with the youngsters. I do not know if she still has the will to fight. On top of this, I would hate it to see her loosing to players ranked 200 or more...I very much prefer that she retires while still on the top.

No.3 seed Silvia Farina Elia advanced to her fifth semifinal of the season, outlasting qualifier Kveta Peschke 36 62 61.

"I know her [Peschke] game well," Farina Elia said. "She's been off the Tour but she was a high ranked player before her injury. She proved her game is there and she will make her comeback next year."

Peschke pushed Farina Elia to play at the top of her game. Peschke came out strong in the first set, dominating play. Farina Elia noted her opponents play saying, "She played fast and aggressive. She was hitting lots of winners. I tried to mix it up and move better in the second set and things started to change."

"I had confidence with my good start in the second set. At the beginning of the third, I was up 3-0 but it was really close. Although I won the last set 6-1, I felt it was very close. Being older helps for sure. It's tough especially against the young ones."

This is Farina Elia's best result of the past couple of weeks, unable to reach anything beyond the second round in this indoor season. The win over Peschke gives Farina Elia confidence moving into the semifinals.

Hi everybody ;)

I'm sorry for my bad english but I have news:

Last week Silvia was supposed to play a french tournament, "l'open du touquet", but she withdrew

I asked why did she withdrew and a woman answered me that Silvia has been operated the 10/11/04 and her doctor doesn't want her to restart playing tennis so soon...

Do you know what's her problem? I didn't knew she was supposed to be operate

I hope she's fine :wavey:
