I saw all 4 matches and I think Ferguson was undoubtedly the best of the lot. I think experience was all that she lacked in the second set. After the match she looked very dissappointed, she later watched Schett play. If they give Welford another WC next year  the girl didn't even look dissappointed after she lost she was all smiles as looked the same as she did last year form wise. Kriz well I only saw a bit of this match, but she was just outclassed but did try hard and came into the net. As for Horiotopoulus well Torrens Valero played very well, Horiotopoulus hit some good ground strokes and tried to mix it up and come into the net but Torrens Valero was just to good. Apart from Ferguson, I think one thing the other 3 could really work on is there fitness.

Great to see Sophie wasn't outclassed

Great to see Sophie wasn't outclassed
No she definately wasn't. She looked a lot more powerful than last year. In the first set I think she was a bit nervous. But settled down in the second set and played better and went for her shots more. It was on serve till 4-4 and it was a long deuce game in the one she got broken, she saved a couple of break points but in the end it was just the build up of pressure that told. It will be interesting to see how she is in 12 months time if she embarks on a schedule of challenger events to gain experience.

HELP HELP HELP !!!
My name is Acquistapace Gabriele and I'm from Italy. I've discovered that there is a young player with 1 WTA point and she is called Acquistapace Bianca.
I don't know her and so I would like to have some news or photos about her, because maybe her family come from my places Valtellina or Lake of Como in Italy.
Is there anyone that knows who this girl is ?

hopefully one can win atleast
and evie . . well . . lets wave bye as ranking drops even further

Yeah the draw is very tough for all the girls. At least it will be a GREAT experience for the young ones- especially Casey. Will Serna be the highest ranked girl she's played in singles?? Well I guess we can always HOPE for an upset somewhere!
Well Happy New Year Everyone. And I hope you all had a great Chrissie! :wavey:
PS (nice signature Spikey- must have taken awhile to write!!)

Alicia was rusty but did well to win! She said she was 'scratchy' and admitted she had spent little time on court lately having to instead rest her foot. She said it was not an ideal preperation. I'm sure she will get enough time on court here and at Sydney to be playing well at the Oz Open.
As for Dellacqua- didn't see the match but seems a respectable score, Magui was always going to be a hard opponent for Casey.
Well there is NO pressure for Sam to perform now is there!! I hope she can play a great match. (fingers crossed)

Big win for Nicole!!!!!!!
Much better than Stosurs win. Shaughnessy's been in a slump losing in the 1st round in 5 of her last 6 tournaments where as Lina K been playing well.
Looks like Nicole has started the year in top form, just like last year playing like a top 25 player!
Jan 6th, 2004, 07:49 AM
Lina K hasn't won two consecutive matches since Toronto tho :p

1st round Doubles - WC- Samantha Stosur (AUS) / Christina Wheeler (AUS) def. Tina Krizan (SLO) / Katarina Srebotnik (SLO) 7-5 6-1
Sam/Christina now play Pratt/Loit so we have at least 1 guaranteed Semi-Finalist in Doubles!

Sam and Christina

Good that Sam won but shame the Nicole lost to a much higher ranked opponent and #2 seed
