Top seed Paola Suarez acclimatises on centrecourt as overseas players arrive for ASB Women's tennis classic

31 December 2003

The tennis stars continue to stream in for next week's ASB Women's Classic in Auckland.

Top seed Paola Suarez has arrived and has already been training on Wednesday at the Tennis Centre.

Suarez was in good spirits as she acclimatised and hit a few balls on centre court.

She has also confirmed that she will be playing with her regular doubles partner Virginia Ruano Pascual.

The pair are ranked number one in the world.

Meanwhile, few expectations for New Zealand number one Shelly Stephens heading into the ASB Classic.

Stephens has been gifted a wildcard into the main draw, where she has failed to progress past the first round previously.

But she has a fairly laid back approach to the task this time.

Stephens says she will see who she plays and then just relax into doing her best out on the court.

Another New Zealander, 15-year-old Marina Erakovic, has turned down the offer of a wildcard in order to concentrate on junior tournaments offshore.

BTW, Eleni arrived in Auckland on the 28th, 8 days before the beginning of the tournament   I guess she's serious about being defending champion ;)
