View Full Version : A match that convinced you that player X was gonna be a big thing

Some players start realizing their potential long after they first show some sign of greatness and brilliance and others quickly build on it. But either way, there's always a match or two where the player shows us whatever it takes to reach the elite bunch sooner or later. It could be a few sporadic shots which they hit or a certain attitude they show in those matches.
For example: Kimiko upset Gaby in LA in 1991 and before that match, she was a player in obscurity. Even after that mach, it took her a while before she really made a significant jump in the rankings. But since then, I had known she would break through at some stage sooner or later despite her struggle afterwards.
Can you think of any specific match where you believed a player would be a big thing with the time passing?

Justine's crosscourt backhands against Davenport in the second round of RG 99. It was that match that gave me a strong feeling that she would make it to the absolute top and not her victory in Antwerp a few weeks earlier.
