Flashback : Top 100 May 1991

After seeing the thread of the top 100 from 25 years ago, I thought I would post this top 100 from 12 years ago I found, to see if you recognise more names on this than the one from the 1970s. Quite a few players are still playing and in the top 100 12 and a half years later.

*I absolutely loved Zardo style of play. She was a lefty with a great one handed backhand :)

*Though pointing Gigi Fernández & Meredith Mc Grath great run in doubles both of them reached singles semis in Wimbledon

*Sorry to say, but Elena Brioukhovets has to be the ugliest player ever playing in the Tour (tied with Spain's Paula Hermida :p )

*Martinek, Garrone, Langrova or Quentrec are clear examples of how the Tour has improved its fitness :tape: :tape:

*Strnadova was meant to be a great star after winning twice Wimbledon junior (the last player to do this) and reaching 5 or 6 WTA finals in her teens -though losing all of them- Unfortunately retired so early :confused:

*Tessi retired early after being a top junior player supposedly burnt out because her father's abuse :sad: Godridge was another one retiring early in 1996 but came out from nowhere this year to play Fed Cup for Hong Kong losing all her 4 matches :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

*Regina is happily married to Korda and have (at least) 2 kids. Retired to marry him after reaching the last 16 in the US Open.

*Claudia Porwick benefited from Gaby's injury in the Australian Open 1990 to amazingly reach the semis :eek:

Anyway, there are many on that list that I don't recognize but I do remember Stephanie Rehe. She was the youngest player to ever have a WTA ranking and Steffi was the second youngest. Plus, Stephanie Rehe dated Steffi Graf's brother Michael for quite a while. :hearts: Last I heard of her she was doing some commentating on a cable channel.

Romano and Bartos are the 2 I've never heard of...However, I've only seen about half of them ever play, many of them were still a bit before I really got into watching tennis a lot :)

Hereis the real question. I have tried to look up Rehe's stats on the ITF database, but she must've gotten married as the database no longer registers her under that name. So what's her married name!

Oh this brings back so many great memories.....

Quentrec - she had a Sinead O Conner crew cut and was very gutsy from memory.

Tessi - pretty blonde. Had an evil brother, I think, who pushed her too hard so she burned out young. :mad:

Reinach - very elegant but very SLOW :lol:

Zardo - was a bit in the Patty mould, but nowhere near as good.

Zrubakova- watched her quite a bit. Always seemed to be losing to ASV, when I saw her.

I have memories of many of the others. Wish I knew what they were up to now...

That 1991 list was impressive. Almost 1/3 of them were former/future top 10 players, and just over 1/5 former/future top 5's. That's a lot of talent. And that was around the time when Gaby was twice within one match win of the #1 ranking.

Later that year, my current fave would turn pro, reach the final of her first WTA event as a pro, and crack the top 100.

The name game: Peanut Louie was "Mareen" (pronounced like "marine"). If she and her older sister, Marcelyn, were on a team together, the jerseys would have to include the first 4 letters of their first names to distinguish them.

Halle Cioffi is listed in the past player bios on the WTA site, I think under "Halle Carroll" (married name).

I have the YER for every year since 1987 (for ~the top 250), and complete list (or at least the top 5 or 6 hundred) since 1991, and top 100's for every week since mid-June of '95. It would probably be better to stick to YER for now, to save space (and time... and typing fingers).

Maybe we can copy all of the year-end top 100's in one thread, in order, and someone can do an analysis on them (breakdown by country for each year, etc.).

I remember every single name on the list, but haven't seen all of them play nor know probably what 25% of them looked like. Some players just don't attract a profile.

I remember every name on the list too, as I was a bit of an anorak as a kid and used to copy the top 100 ranking list out of Tennis World magazine every month :o The WTA also used to send me computer print outs of the top 1000 every so often as I'd asked them nicely. ;) This was long before the days of internet access of course.

Carrie Cunningham was a player in the Helen Kelesi mode, in style and temperament. I'm sure the match they played at the Canadian Open one year was full of feisty gamesmanship.

Question about Raffella Reggi. Last night Sam Smith compared Schiavone to Reggi in terms of apperance and personality.

No, I wouldn't have said Raffaella resembled Schiavone in appearence. However, she was a feisty, scrapper who enjoyed the game so she was similar in that respect. She hit a pretty flat forehand and two handed backhand.
