I think the Cat is onto something. I don't think much of A.S., but Shaughnessy is playing like cr*p and Alex has had very good results at this venue. (She took a set off of Mauresmo last month here)

I don't think it's as hopeless for the U.S.A as some of you are making out... They are almost certain to win the doubles and then have to win two other rubbers. Both Mauresmo & Pierce have been known to crumble in the face of pressure before, so if Lisa holds her nerve and Shaugnessey gets her act together, they're in with a chance. I still think France is more likely to win and I hope that they will, but it could still be close!

i think i would play stevenson as well. shaughnessy was lucky to beat a junior and got easily defeated by a player in her thirties who lost 2 and 1 to raymond the day before.

i don't care anyway because i would much rather france win

it's not as big of a mismatch as you may think.

raymond/nav is a tougher dubs combo than loit/SCA (but not by that much), and lisa and meghann both have decent shots against Pierce. they are a combined 0-5 against amelie .... so really, unless amelie does some harsh choking, it'll come down to what the americans can do against pierce and in doubles.

i say france should be favoured 70-30.

I am rooting for the US, of course, but I think they would have had a much better chance winning if Venus, Serena, Lindsay, Jennifer or Chanda were on the team, but they can still beat France, but it will be close.

We all know that Amelie is sometimes not rock-solid mentally. Still, unless she cracks under pressure or something, she's gonna beat the American girls easily. Mary should win one or both of her matches.

If all goes to plan in singles, I wonder whether they might give Amelie/Mary a workout in doubles.

All things considered, unless Alex has an injury acting up, it might be a good time for a substitution.

Or, if BJ really wants to mess with their heads, she could use... Martina in singles. Think about it. The French players would go from matches they should win, to matches they must win to avoid embarassment (losing to a 47-year-old). The pressure would be enormous. (Although I'd hate to see Momo's psyche messed with.)

I was actually just thinking the same as Brian Stewart - that BJK's best option might well be to go with Martina Navratilova in singles. She may not be in practice but even at 47, she's probably a little better than both Stevenson and Shaugnessey are playing right now. And, as he's said, it'd mess with Amelie's head in particular. I think it's unlikely though.

It's a fun idea but I think Pierce and Mauresmo are two players who would handle martina's current game pretty easily. I think Mauresmo should win her matches easily, the only possible question mark in my mind is Mary pierce. Lisa Raymond is definitely in with a chance, and Shaughnessey/Steveson has a chance at an upset.

Yeah, I don't see Amelie cracking. If it was in France, maybe. Plus her style of game will not suit Meg at all, and she has a 4-0 record against Lisa, including a recent drubbing indoors.

I think its a testimony to how well Mary is playing and how highly she is regarded that she is seen as the favourite in her matches. She's ranked lower than both Shaugnessy and Raymond so technically should be the underdog.

Beating Vera wasn't seen as a major shock either (she's ranked 13!) and even in her match against #7 Myskina people felt that Mary lost the match rather than Myskina winning it.

I'm happy to say that it looks like Mary is most definately on her way back! :bounce: Some of her shots in the first set of both matches were unbelievable!!
