I'm a clueless newbie;) I've been following Amélie's results for some time, and it would be great if she broke through here. She's a wonderful player- she just needs to work on the mental part and get injured less often

I love the name "Momosapiens"!

:wavey: Mariangelina,
Welcome to the jungle :p! I think Amélie has a great shot at winning the Aussie Title - she plays so well on rebound ace and if Kim does withdraw - Davenport will be on the opposite side of the draw. Amélie doesn't seem to know how to play Lindsay yet!

Eurosport are covering the tournament every night from 11pm our time so if you want to watch the matches live that means no sleep for 2 weeks. I hope you picked up some pointers from the reality tv show "Shattered" ;) . They're also repeating matches during the day.

Just saw Amélie on Eurosport doing an interview - she was wearing a black top with the words "goddess of Victory" across the front. She seemed very relaxed and confident. Apparently she had a back injury last week but it hasn't flaired up at the Open yet. I hope it stays away cause her serve hasn't been this good in years!

Caoimhe
Jan 21st, 2004, 06:30 PM
I saw it too, they mentioned the back thing during the match too I think.
I managed to stay awake to tape it, then I had intended to watch it after my lectures this morning, but well.... why wait so I missed them.
But it was well worth it to see her in fine form.

Amélie's audio interview is here, at the very bottom of the page:

Quote from Amélie after the match:

Fourth seed Amelie Mauresmo cruised past Slovakian Ludmila Cervanova, 6-0, 6-2, in 44 minutes. Mauresmo, the 1999 finalist, has lost only three games in her two matches.

"I've always played some good matches here," said the Frenchwoman, who reached the final at Sydney last week."I feel like probably there is an opportunity to take this tournament, not only because some players are not here, but also because I feel good and because I feel my game is getting better and better."

Maybe I'm a born optimist, but I read the French more as uncertain, worried, will see in the morning than most likely not. I certainly hope she'll play, and I'm wearing my lil good luck necklace because it was all I could think of. But which brainless coach or training practice or whatever causes all these injuries? I'm optimistic for some reason about her chances of playing today, but she's in pain anyway  Maybe I'm being harsh, but I'm starting to think Courteau is a moron.

Why does she get so many stupid injuries?

From L'Equipe (babelfrenched):

Dubious Mauresmo

The Frenchwoman Amélie Mauresmo (N.4), wounded with the back, could not dispute her quarterfinal of International of Australia against the Colombian Fabiola Zuluaga (N.32). Mauresmo had announced Sunday at the time of the press conference which had followed her victory over Australian Alicia Molik (40e), 7-5, 7-5, that she had felt a pain by carrying out a flight. "But I do not want to stop with that", she had declared, after having also made state of stiffnesses in the legs. By precaution, she spent Monday morning of the [MRI] which revealed a tear intercostale of one centimetre and half. The Frenchwoman, who must play 11 a.m. Tuesday, will carry out a small test in the morning. If this test were negative, she would decide not to take part in order not to compromise the continuation of her season.

I hope she'll decline to play and take care of the injury. This is the beginning of the season and she has the whole year to consider.

I think Amélie is just injury prone. She had injuries before Loic became her coach. He's done quite a lot for her game and obviously continues to motivate her. She's really improved her ability to move forward and come to net under his direction. He's helped to give her an all court game. I don't think we can blame these injuries on him. Some tennis players just have a body that's more prone to injury. Unfortunately I think she's one of them. Either way I know she's smart and capable enough to make the decision of whether to play, and what treatment she'll seek.

Allez Amélie! Get well soon!!

Great posts everyone and i agree 95% with Sonja but the only thing is Amélie has a real chance of winning the title with the players who are left in the draw. I hope the injury isn't as bad as it seems and the only positive I can take out of this injury is that if she does decide to finish this tournament she will be so concentrated on her injury that she won't get nervous playing the top players and could perform at a really high level against them. It's just such a tough injury to get and in a bad place too - she won't be able to protect it when she plays. Amélie isn't stupid and she'll make the correct decision whatever it may be.

In the mean time Good Luck against Fab!

Mauresmo withdraws because of back injury
January 26, 2004

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- Amelie Mauresmo (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/166/) withdrew before her Australian Open quarterfinal match Tuesday against Fabiola Zuluaga (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/175/) because of a torn back muscle.

The fourth-seeded Mauresmo, injured while stretching for a backhand volley Sunday against Australia's Alicia Molik (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/78/), hit for about 10 minutes on center court with coach Loic Courteau, then buried her face in a towel and began to weep.

Courteau said the 27-year-old French player was OK at first, but began experiencing pain as the warmup intensified. `As soon as she went up to the net to volley, it was like a knife thrust in her back,'' Courteau said.

He earlier said a medical scan had shown a slight muscle tear and that no chance would be taken of aggravating the injury.

Mauresmo was seeking her first Grand Slam title. One of the strongest players on the women's circuit, she has been plagued by injuries throughout her career. Mauresmo, the runner-up in 1999, was dominant in her first three matches, dropping only six games, but tweaked her back in the first set in a 7-5, 7-5 fourth-round victory over Molik. The 32nd-seeded Zuluaga is the first Colombian woman to make the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam event.

From Yahoo

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Babelfished' translation:

Tuesday morning, Amélie Mauresmo, head hidden in her towel, cried at the edge of the 'court central' Melbourne Park. After ten minutes scampering? around the court, then ten minutes of exchanges of ball with her trainer Loic Courteau, she knew that she would not defend her chances in the Quarterfinal of the Australian Open against the Colombian, number 32 seed, Fabiola Zuluaga. The meeting, the first of the day, was programmed on the central court with 11hrs standard time (00h00 GMT). "As soon as I went up to volley it was like a blow of a knife. The pain was so sharp that I knew that I could not defend my chances against Zuluaga", declared the French player after having forfeited the match. Mauresmo had indeed undergone a tear intercostale, by playing a backhand volley at full stretch, at the time of the fourth match of her meeting in the fourth round against Australian Alicia Molik. An injury which was right of her chances to Open of Australia. A lenient draw and previous encouraging form, thus did not make it possible for Mauresmo to gain her first Grand Slam title, where she was finalist - for the only time in her career on this level, at the time of Australian Open in 1999. The injuries, obsessions of any sportsman, marked out the career of the French player. In 2001, she was wounded with the back, a recurring difficulty, and had to withdraw from the tournament at Sydney, knowing a physical exhaustion which forced her to declare forfeit for three other tests. Thereafter, an injury with the left leg, gave on the key. The following year, her left knee forced her to rest at the end of the season, obliging her to withdraw from the female Masters and to make a four month pause. And in 2003, she did not play Wimbledon because of an injury to her ribs...

At the time of her press conference on Tuesday, bombarded by photographers, Mauresmo, terribly disappointed, again broke down, crying, lowering her head, her face hidden behind her hair and her hand. "I am touched, atteinte(?). It is a great disappointment. A great frustration," she entrusted a little later, tears in her eyes. "Moreso as I always played well here and I had the impression of a beautiful chance to seize this year. I had succeeded in imposing myself in each match in a good manner. But there, there is nothing one can do." A MRI by scanner had revealed the small tear on Sunday. "I had never had a pain at this place," specified the player Monday. "The doctor said to me that it was rare in tennis, but a very common wound in cricket. If I decided to forfeit (the match), it is because of the pain, of course, but also to not mortgage? (risk?) the continuation of my season." Amélie Mauresmo will take a plane Tuesday to return to France."I will follow a program of care and re-education, but without having the least idea how long that will take", she underlined, before adding: "I will do everything to be able to return as soon as possible." Cut in her run up at Melbourne, Mauresmo as was cut down Tuesday by this blow dealt by fate: "This makes odd", she entrusted. "My tennis is there. My game progresses. This goes forward."

But, once again, her body does not follow...

 This has all been such a sad thing to happen...like I posted previous in this thread that Momo has gained my respect after her match with Molik (classic tennis....could have given them both wooden rackets and would still be a great spectacle)...that I hoped Momo would take it all.

Momo is a battler.....but to see her break down in a press conference is disturbing to anyone that realises what a "Natural" tennis talent looks like from these "Manufactured Seles', with one hand forehands".

Momo will fight back and I hope she takes the French (as long as Molik isn't in the final hehe  ) j/k

Speedy recovery momo and come back strong.

(ps....I don't hear anyone saying Henin hits her backhand like a man?? there must be some sour pusses on tour):wavey:

I've actually got tears in my eyes looking at those pics  This seems so incredibly unfair. She was playing so well and had a real chance this year, and then this happens :bigcry: :fiery: If she doesn't win a Slam this year, the tennis gods are officially jerks.

 :hearts: :awww:  Get well soon Amélie! :awww: :hearts:

From FFT:

The Frenchwoman puts in perspective the moment of the drama perfectly. "It was in the fourth game, on a backhand volley in end of race, she indicated. I felt like a blow of a knife. Since then, the pain does not leave me, it obstructs me even in everyday life. It is a not very commom wound for a tenniswoman. It was said to me that it is more usual for cricketers rather." Having not played the Australian Open since 2002 because of a knee injury (a chrondopathy), the Frenchwoman showed the blow morally: "It is difficult to leave a Grand Slam without returning onto the court. I had the feeling of producing good tennis. In the quarterfinal, I had a beautiful opportunity vis-a-vis in Fabiola Zuluaga. It is hard to stop like this. It is the first time that this has happened to me in a Grand Slam. It is not a final-blow. I know that I will pass above it. I will do all that it will be necessary to return as soon as possible on the circuit. But that made odd to leave the tournament like this. I am unaware of how long I should stop."

Cold comfort: Amélie Mauresmo will pass number 3 world to the next classification. Very cold comfort, one imagines when it will be on the aircraft of the return?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Having seen all those sad pics, it is so good to read Amélie's courageous words. I just hope that one day she will be able to reach her full potential...

Be strong Amélie, we're all thinking of you..... http://www.my-smileys.de/smileys_1/crying2.gif
