Interesting... at least she's planning to play the Middle East tournies this year. I'd prefer her playing Charleston... but whatever.

Good schedule bettter than last year. GO Lena, take heaps of points.

Points, points, points. That's what I want.

I also want another match against Capriati. Lena seems to have confidence against her.

uhmmmm
too much tournies imho

i guess it means she will skip a good part of clay season

It is a lot. To make Fed Cup and the Olympics, Lena needs points.
Just because you're on the commitment list doesn't mean you play the event.
It does look like Lena will go light on the FO tuneups.

Why do you say too many tournies?

She's taking off 2 weeks after Tokyo... then Indian Wells & Miami are 2 week events, where she'll most likely be having a week rest between each event.

Anyway, I'd be surprised if she plays Amelia Island, personally.

I don't know anything after Fed Cup... but I'd assume she'll play probably 2 of the big 3 clay events before RG.

You made a list of 9 tournaments, all before May. Plus Fed Cup. If Lena goes deep into the draws, that's a lot of tennis.
What do you think of Vera playing the first Fed Cup match? If it's not done by ranking, I think Lena should be there.

This isn't a commitment list... like the lists from Schett's board.

This is just what I was told she'll be playing.

IF Lena goes deep in draws... last year, Kim and Justine played quite a bit before Fed Cup, probably about 9 tournaments. I know Vera & Alyona had to play a heck of a lot more than 9 before Fed Cup, last year.

I honestly don't think it's that much... plus, I doubt she'll be playing every week. Remember, Lena withdraws from a fair share of tournaments also.

I know it's not a commitment list. I meant to say it doesn't mean Lena will play all those tournaments. Injuries, tiredness, stuff happens.

Elena D. lost her first match in 4 tournaments before AI.
She only has 3 points to defend in January.
Lena has to win, win, win.

Alyona still had a pretty decent start to the year...

SF's in Paris, won a few matches in Indian Wells.

Bovina has basically nothing after Tokyo. It will work itself out.

I feel that being the #5 Russian and having so many points to defend early in 2004 put Lena in a tough position as far as Fed Cup.
By late summer, Lena will catch up.
Some huge early results would be great.
And a great confidence builder.

It's possible for Lena to reach the Fed Cup team by the post-Wimbledon 2nd round matches. Vera & Nadya will have a lot to defend.

So you think no doubles next year?

#1 Cory Ann Fan
Nov 18th, 2003, 11:45 PM
I believe she'll still be playing with Els on the part-time basis they have...

goldenlox
Nov 18th, 2003, 11:47 PM
That's a good deal for Els. Good money in doubles.
Most of the tour is scrambling for a quality partner.

Nov 18th, 2003, 11:49 PM
Fuck doubles.

Focus on the singles' career.

goldenlox
Nov 18th, 2003, 11:51 PM
If I was Els, I would want to play doubles with Lena also. Lena has to break this duo up.

If I was Lena, I'd kick Grandma Elske to the curb.

As long as they only play about one event a month, doubles could be a good change of pace for Lena.
But top players need to take a week off here and there. And Lena has to set her schedule to benefit herself, not Els.

I disagree.

I think Lena should either be committed to doubles, or not play it at all. If Lena played a full doubles schedule this year, there's a good chance she'd be a Top 10 doubles player this year.

But, Lena will never play enough doubles, with her propensity to not overplay herself, with being a Top 20 singles player... so she shouldn't bother at all.

I've never agreed with the belief that doubles helps your singles game. If you want to help your singles game... play as much singles as Alyona.

Elena D. plays a lot of doubles. Once a month, you work on your serve & volley game.
Are you mad at Els?

#1 Cory Ann Fan
Nov 23rd, 2003, 09:27 PM
I know Elena D. plays a lot of doubles. Her schedule is insane, though. It's amazing she's not injured all the time.

It's not that I don't like Els... but I don't see how Lena benefits from this partnership. It's not like she's going to learn much from a lifetime scrub on tour, and Els has never been a top doubles player.

Lena had something with Rennae... and they both kept changing throughout the year. Why not stick with Rennae?

If anything, play with one of her Russian peers.

It's an Olympic year. I was assuming Els is a good friend of Lena.

#1 Cory Ann Fan
Nov 23rd, 2003, 09:40 PM
They are good friends.

Lena is probably better friends with Paola Suarez. Let's hook up with her.

goldenlox
Nov 23rd, 2003, 09:44 PM
Suarez has a good friend she plays with. There has to be some fun in life besides hitting tennis balls.
Each player needs a friend to hang with. Or boyfriend/coach.

Lena is friends with many players. I know she talks with many of them.

That doesn't have to do with doubles, though. I doubt Martina and Sveta hang out all the time.

goldenlox
Nov 23rd, 2003, 09:54 PM
Sveta was using Martina's personal trainer. I think Martina likes her.
They played a full season of doubles together.

I'm not sure where this thread went.

Anyway...

Singles = #1 priority.

Doubles = Just for fun.

This whole forum is a circus.

Why does an unknown player like Lena Bovina have such a popular forum?

The common fan has no idea who she is... or they just know she's the really tall girl... or the girl with the funny hat.

goldenlox

One reason this forum is so popular is that we discuss Lena in relation to other players, the tour in general, and the development of tennis players as they mature.

take a look at the www.wtatour.com (http://www.wtatour.com/) - poll, "Which russian will crack the Top 10 first?"
Petrova, Zvonareva and Sharapova have each about 30% :o
Lena only 5% :awww:

Well, Nadya and Bepa are much closer to Top 10 than Lena is. Maria is the Tour's Barbie now... so she'll get the horny male vote.

Lena is still way behind on that internet poll. That Lena is so unknown just shows how powerful hype is.
Lena is the best player in that group.

Lena has to defend 499 points in October. That's Moscow, Filderstadt, Zurich, and Linz.
That means Lena needs to win matches at Wimbledon and the US Open this coming summer.
