Comon Girls

Lets get those rankings up before the Oz Open !!

Ok, for those of you who are in the know, who of the Aussie girls, besides Alicia, has made any significant improvement to their ranking this year?

It's a bit disappointing to think that come the AO next year, the only two who will direct enter on their rankings will be Alicia and Nicole. I was hoping that Sam and Evie would both break top 100 this year, allowing more of the Aus gals to have a chance at the wildcards.

There rankings have plumeted :o

AUSBOY
Nov 12th, 2003, 02:09 AM
Here is a start!

35 (35) Alicia Molik (Great year would have been top 30 without injuries up from 100 at start of year)

53 (53) Nicole Pratt (Erratic year, some great tournaments, a slump on all surfaces except hardcourt, still a reasonable year for Nicole)

130 (124) Evie Dominikovic (Apart from Aust Open and French Open her year was crap, had brief spell in top 100, ranking has dropped now from 110)

153 (149) Samantha Stosur (Started year in low 200's, after Aust Open though was in 150's, has done next to nothing since Aust Open)

169 (168) Christina Wheeler (Same mediocre results as last year, no improvement, ranking around the same)

263 (226) Racheal McQuillan (Apart from winning Bendigo $25K, Rachel has only won 2 other matches! Now injured her rank will drop to 360's after Mount Gambier, her career is all but over. Rank has dropped from 170's to 360 in a few weeks)

264 (260) Lauren Breadmore (Reasonable year for Lauren, her rank got a surprise boost at Aust Open. Given her talent she's done ok with some smart scheduling off to China soon for the $50K's. Rank up from about 380 I think.)

271 (268) Monique Adamzack (Excellent year, rank up from 1000+ after returning from injury)

275 (341) Casey Dellacqua (Played limited schedule, started year in 400's. Has been a good year for her!)

Would agree with that

Alicia has had the break through year with Nicole consolidating

Evie and Racheal are dropping

while Sam and Christina are being consistent

look for Kriz, Dellacqua, Stewart and Adamzcak to go great in the new year

I think the one shining point for Aus Women's Tennis this year has been Alicia's breakthru. She does have her highest year end ranking ever and did win a title.

It's funny but I thought Nicole had done nothing special this year. I took it for granted that she would be ranked 53 or higher this year. Her ranking is remarkable when you consider what a horrible patch she had there for a while. Rewind to 1999 (I think) when she was ranked about 120 and got in AO on a WC, doubt if anyone would have thought she would have performed so well over the next 4 years.

Evie, very disappointing, not just because her ranking is plummeting but it's frustrating because she is so talented. She has been top 100 before and she has the ability to be consistently ranked there. Does anyone know if she is carrying an injury, is a mental issues or does she not enjoy the travel/tour?

Sam seemed to hit the 139 wall which is a replay of the Cindy Watson situation. Think she will fall steadily over the next few weeks as the Challengers play out unless she can get in some good wins. Hope next year can be a better one for her.

Christine seems to have trod water.

Casey seems to be the only other one who has had a reasonable year. Hope she does well in the SA Challengers and we see her move up considerably.

Evie did have a couple of injuries during the year but I think it's hard to get around the fact that she did have a pretty ordinary year.

I think one of the problems with Evie is that she cant seem to settle down with one coach. I think she's had about 5 or 6 coaches since turning pro and each one almost starting from scratch and trying to restructure her game.

The current coach Adrian Montesinos took over just before the French Open where Evie trounced Benesova 60 61 but she hasn't won a match on the WTA tour since R1 Birmingham in June.

Yes it is frustrating coz Evie's best is top 20 stuff but her worst is atrocious

But she is still my fave! :rocker2:

Definitely a nice jump for Trudi, from 11th Oz gal to #6. Hopefully some of the girls will get some nice results this week and see them move up a few slots before this challengers series is over.

On the positive side, not too many of them are going to have a lot of points to defend this time next year.

AUSBOY

Hewitt is now the 15th highest ranked Aussie!

TS

Great jumps from Trudi and Jaslyn in the last few weeks...fantastic for Trudi to be the #6 ranked Aussie!

I'm a bit concerned to see Beti Sekulovksi (530) and Christina Horiatopoulos (1030) ranked so low...both girls have a considerable amount of talent but are struggling since returning from injuries :( Hopefully they can 'do a Monique' next year.

Monique has had an excellent year...winning 3 satellites and jumping over 800 places :hearts: Hopefully I'm not jumping the gun when I say top 200 here she comes! She trains hard, and is super fit, so why not?

I wonder what 2004 holds for Cindy Watson? Will she make a go of it again? Has Amanda Grahame definitely retired?

I still think Christina Wheeler needs *one* big tournament breakthrough and we will see her finally do something...

It is great to see Trudi, Jaslyn, Monique and Brianne all rise in rankings

Hope amanda comes back and also hope that cindy can get back to her ranking of mid 150's a couple years ago

Wheller has mostly played US challengers this year which is good but she could of also entered into higher tournaments and pushed for more points. Hopefully this year our Bigger tournaments (qld, tas, act and syd) will prove a stepping stone 4 some guys

if im correct i think only 1 or 2 players got into 2nd round in these tournaments . . .

Yah Jaslyn!! I hope she can prove the critics wrong. I still remember a few years ago when she lost round 1 of Oz Open she was on back page of paper and totally ripped. The paper kept saying how she was more stocky then Lleyton and that she didn't have the game and blah blah. That was sooo horrible. Has anyone seen her play?? What is like? Does she play similar to Lleyton?

So, will we start seeing Evie live up to the potential
she's shown back in juniors for 2004?

I'll tell you guys something funny. Since moving
to Singapore...I've come to know more about
Australia than I imagined possible. The locals
are Aussie mad I tell you. LOL. It's like Australia
is everyone's favorite sister city. I can't believe
that Singapore isn't still a colony of the
CommonWealth!!!!!!!!!! HA! If I hear another
Singaporean brag about buying a "flat" in
Melbourne again, I'll have to choke his/her necks!!
Hehehheheeh.

Anyway..I now receive "live" coverage of the
Australian Open and even the Hopman Cup, so I'm not
complaining. :)

To cut a long story short, ahem. With the constant
focus on Australia placed in my live abroad in
Singapore. I find myself cheering for Australians
instead of Americans at the grand slams. ROTF
Weird isn't it? I don't know, I just hate the way
American tennis players think they always get
their way etc....

Still can't get into Nicole, though. Sorry, but I want
to see those rankings for everybody else move up
in 2004. Damn it! Tell Hewitt to beat the crap out
of Roddick too and get that silly number 1 ranking
back.

Jaslyn's a fighter. She had a much better junior career than Lleyton, she won a few junior tournament including the Italian Open I think. She certainly had a few big junior scalps to her credit. She has a consistant back court game. She has good variety on the forehand, she can hit flat and hard but can also hit her topspin very well and even has the lob going! Her backhands doublehanded, not as much variation but pretty consistent. Her biggest weakness is her serve, especially the second serve which has nothin on it. She likes to rally, and long rallies are her forte. She's had wins over Nola (top 120), Stosur, and pushed the likes of Farina, McQuillan. She's been ranked as high as 308. She's had a lot of injuries the last few years, mainly knee and abdominal. This is the first time in ages that she has been able to play 4 tournaments straight without having to retire hurt.

Vicky88
Nov 24th, 2003, 10:46 PM
I feel quite sorry for Jaslyn. It's not her fault that Lleyton is her brother, but it seems people are happy to judge her on whether or not they like him. It must be so difficult living up to expectations because Lleyton has been no. 1. I wish the media and the public would just let her get on with it, instead of crowing every time she loses. I don't have an issue if she gets thrown a WC every now and then because she is Lleyton's little sister, because it is no different from someone getting a job because they have a relative working in the company. Hope she continues to move up the rankings.

Nov 25th, 2003, 03:16 AM
I could be wrong but I think if Jaslyn stays injury free she could make top 200, do you guys agree?

Also any chance do you think of her getting a quallie WC to some aussie tournament? i hope she does, but to a lower tier, like canberra or hobart.

TS
Nov 25th, 2003, 03:33 AM
Personally I don't see top 200 in Jaslyn...hopefully she'll prove me wrong :)

Considering the advantages she's got over other players (namely money and world class players around her), she should be a top 200 player...but it all comes down to ability and I just don't see it in her.

AUSBOY
Nov 25th, 2003, 04:22 AM
Jaslyn is about as talented as Lauren Breadmore. She has the ability to be top 300 but I dont think top 200 is likely unless she can drastically improve her serve

Aussie_Kim

Thanks everyone for the info on Jaslyn.

I would love to see her get a quallie wildcard to an Aussie event.
Any low tier would be great. but do you think she will get one??
I think she is worthy. She's ranked 8th for WC into Oz Open, she is probably not ready for a GS MD WC but surely being 8th deserves something??

any chance do you think of her getting a quallie WC to some aussie tournament? i hope she does, but to a lower tier, like canberra or hobart.

TS
Nov 27th, 2003, 05:52 AM
She'll be in line for an AO qualifying WC, there's no doubt about that...and will no doubt get a qualy WC for one of the lead up events (there are lots to go round so she'll get one).

As for MD WC's...no.

Vicky88
Nov 27th, 2003, 05:39 PM
I have to agree I would be totally shocked if Jaslyn was to receive a main draw WC just because I don't think she has played that well. She is certainly deserving of some qualifying WCs.
