ATSIC Mourns Loss of Aboriginal Leader Lee Madden

Born in 1963, Mr Madden was the first Aboriginal school captain at Cleveland Street Boys High School in Surry Hills. He took up the sport of tennis at the age of 14 when he was given a tennis racket by the famous NSW “Black Santa”, “Doc” Cunningham.

During 1983, Lee became one of the first Aboriginal people to win a scholarship at the Australian Institute of Sport, after having being coached by Canberra-based Charlie Hollis, who also coached tennis greats Emerson, Laver and Edmondson.

According to another report, Lee's sister Deirdre was also a tennis pro.

There's a photo of Lee on p. 269 of Colin and Paul Tatz' book, Black Gold - The Aborginal and Islander Sports Hall of Fame. Apparently he won the NSW North Coast Open and played on the European tour.

I'll admit I have never heard of Lee Madden, but have to say it is sad to see someone who is relatively young dies.
