Flipkens Called up to Belgian Squad
The Belgian Tennis Federation has announced that their team for the Fed Cup World Group Semifinals and Final will be Els Callens, Caroline Maes, Elke Clijsters and Kirsten Flipkens.

Belgium will play the United States in the semifinals on 19-20 November at Moscow’s Olympic Stadium, with the American team already announced as Meghann Shaughnessy, Lisa Raymond, Alexandra Stevenson and Martina Navratilova. The winner of this tie will face the winner of the France versus Russia semifinal in the final on 22-23 November.

Flipkens, 17, is currently No. 1 in the ITF Junior World Rankings and is in contention to end the year in the top spot following her back-to-back victories at Wimbledon and the US Open. She will be making her Fed Cup debut in Moscow. The other teenager on the team, 18-year-old Elke Clijsters, was 2002 ITF Junior World Doubles Champion. This will be her second Fed Cup tie, having played doubles in Belgium’s quarterfinal loss to Italy in July 2002.

Callens was part of the 2001 Belgium team that won the nation’s first Fed Cup title in 2001.

Changes to the team can still be made ahead of the deadline for official nominations on Sunday 9 November.

Navratilova Named in USA Fed Cup Team
The USTA and US Fed Cup Captain Billie Jean King today announced that 58-time Grand Slam champion Martina Navratilova, Meghann Shaughnessy, Lisa Raymond and Alexandra Stevenson have been named to the USA team that will vie for the 2003 Fed Cup title in Moscow.

The USA takes on Belgium in the World Group semifinals on 19-20 November at Moscow’s Olympic Stadium. The winner of this tie will face the winner of France versus Russia semifinal in the final on 22-23 November.

Navratilova, whose undefeated singles and doubles Fed Cup record (37-0) is unmatched in Fed Cup history, will return to Fed Cup competition for the first time since 1995. She turns 47 on Thursday and becomes the oldest player to compete in the World Group in the 40-year history of Fed Cup.

“This team is very excited about going to Moscow and we are going there to win. These four women are very experienced players and Martina brings additional power to our line-up and prestige to this international competition,” said King. “We are all looking forward to going to Moscow and bringing the Fed Cup back to the United States.”

Navratilova equalled King’s all-time record of 20 Wimbledon titles with her 2003 Wimbledon mixed doubles title with Leander Paes and reached the 2003 US Open doubles final (with Svetlana Kuznetsova). The holder of 18 singles, 31 doubles and nine mixed doubles Grand Slam titles, Navratilova holds a record 167 singles and 172 doubles WTA Tour titles. She has competed in 21 Fed Cup ties, 16 representing the USA and five with Czechoslovakia . As a member of the USA Fed Cup team, Navratilova’s win-loss record stands at 28-0.

The USA, which returns to a Fed Cup semifinal for the first time since 2000, has won a record 17 Fed Cup championships - more than any other nation - since the inception of the competition in 1963.

OMG

It will be a real surprise if Belgium take a set from the Americans :o
Only Els Callens has some chances but that's doubtful too

It should be a cake walk for USA
The only person I see as having a chance is Flipkens, and thats only if she plays Stevenson on one of her bad days

May I remind you that Els Callens has already beaten Shaughnessy, Raymond and Stevenson before in singles
She won't be such a pushover, and certainly not in Fed Cup, where she can always do that little extra....

Remember the USA -vs- AUSTRIA?
Wasn't that suppose to be a done deal
for BJk, just a formality? lol

It's in Moscow...anything can happen. :)

There were other factors involved in the USA vs. Austria tie that affected the outcome.

Els is the only person that really has a chance. She will probably do well against Meghann although Lisa will be very difficult for her given how both are playing right now and especially the surface. Lisa and Martina will sweep the doubles. I think that the USA will win 4-1, but that's just a speculation.

No, Belgium doesn't stand a chance. They won't win a set, but I want to see how Flipkens does against the Americans. I hope she can play some close sets (7-6 or 7-5).

With Kim in the team Belgium would have won with 3-2 (all won by Kim in singles and doubles). With Kim and Justine it would have been 5-0 for Belgium.
