Chanda Rubin slapped a forehand that flew three feet beyond the baseline then swatted the air in frustration. Serving for the match twice in the second set, Rubin was two points from dismissing Elena Dementieva in straight sets and securing a semifinal spot in the Bank of America WTA Tour Championships for the first time in her career.

Ultimately, Rubin surrendered serve, lost the rhythm and range on her strokes, squandered a 5-2 second-set lead and dropped 11 of the final 12 games as a determined Dementieva rallied for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory on the final day of round-robin play at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

It was Dementieva’s first victory in three Red Group round-robin matches, but fourth-seeded French woman Amelie Mauresmo was the big winner. Dementieva’s win means Mauresmo advances to Sunday’s semifinal against new No. 1 Justine Henin-Hardenne in what should be an all-court encounter.

Friday night, Henin-Hardenne crushed Jennifer Capriati, 6-2, 6-1, to surpass compatriot Kim Clijsters and secure the season-ending top spot in the WTA Tour rankings. Defending champion Clijsters will play the winner of tonight’s final round-robin match between Capriati and Anastasia Myskina in Sunday’s other semifinal.
