Ai played very good, she played "everything or nothing" and it worked. Justine was on court with the semifinal in her head, so I was expecting this a bit. I'm even not disappointed, I really had the impression like Justine was also not disappointed. Nice match, well done Ai, good luck tomorrow Justine!

You have a point, but it's also true that making the Top Ten has a lot of symbolism for a player. It's a milestone of sorts, and when they retire they will be referred to as "Former Top Ten tennis player". So it's an exciting day for Ai Sugiyama. :)

Anyway, I have to admit that these are just excuses .

Congrats Ai, and I'm glad that Justine didn't try(or at least to her fullest). She has to play a match the very next day in the semifinals against a much tougher opponent, so why play 100% to come back? My theory is that Justine prolly did try in the first set, but after she lost it, she probably thought to herself, oh what is the point of making this a three set match, so although she got better in the second set(which is usually the case for Justine) she decided that she did not want it to go to a third set and just decided to end it right there. Thats my own theory, and I think its most logical. As for the whole ethics crap, who the hell cares. This makes no impact whatsoever on the semifinals and really this is a win-win situation for everyone. Justine gets her rest, Ai gets her top 10. This is great for everyone, and for the Venus fans who are angry or bitter or whatever that Venus is out of top 10 or something, WHO CARES? Its not like she's gonna stay there for long. We all know that Venus is gonna come back and win all her matches and get back to top 4.

Ai did an excellent job! I didn't expect her to win in this score line though I knew she had a chance since the outcome of the match would make no difference on Justine's part. I think this win gives Ai huge confidence whether Justine tanked it or not. Like someone said in this thread, she won't have many points to defend until Scottsdale and so she will have many opportutnies to improve her ranking even more. I know she can do be better especially in the mental department. She has choked away some important matches this year, espeically the one she lost at the Open was a big shame cuz she really had that one in her hands....that bloody weather!!
Though I still believe Kimiko is the best Asian player ever, Ai has closed the gap so much this year and with her excellent doubles results, she's nearly in the same league as Kimiko now. I would like to see her make a GS semifinal next year.
