I think she has lots of potential considering her win over Ilke Gers who took a set off of Tanasugarn today! I know it's early, but do you think she has top 50 potential or even top 20?

It's much too early to say. I hope she can do well, but she's only 13 and a lot can happen in the next few years that might affect her chances of becoming world-class. But for 13 she looks every bit like a good young player and I only hope she develops as the years roll by.

I just hope she can fulfill her ambitions in tennis

She was featured on the BBC SouthWest 'Spotlight' news programme a few weeks back. Still seems serious about playing tennis. Let's hope she will indeed be able to enter some 10K's when she's 14.

I´m sorry to say that I think that Jade Curtis is overshouted. I saw the documentary on BBC and I wasn´t impressed at all. She´s blown away a couple of times (0-6) against a few junior opponents. She will never be a top junior player and it will be a surprise to me if she´s ever gonna make it on the WTA-rankings. Highest position in her career? I think 783, like a lot of other ´supposed to be´ talented players.

I think that's a bit harsh! I mean, it's been, I don't know, 5 or 6 years since Britain had a decent player so of course she's going to get hyped! She is also 13 and can only better from here!

to early to tell how good of a player she can be. would be good if she was a good singles player for british tennis but if she becomes a good doubles player it would be nearly as good for british tennis, just to see someone doing well at the highest level would be nice.

Caribbean queen

British 14-year-old Jade Curtis is highly regarded in the junior tennis world.

Despite her age, she is marching towards a top-100 ranking with potentially three years still left to play at junior level.

Here, in the first of what will become regular diary entries for BBC Sport Academy, she explains why she chooses to play on the international circuit and the sacrifices she has to make.

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/shared/img/o.gifJade Curtis facts
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41060000/jpg/_41060631_jade270.jpg
Age: 14
From: Cornwall, UK
World junior ranking: 114
Titles: Barbados, Guadeloupe, Jamaica
Interests: Shopping, reading, music, movies

Both my parents are tennis coaches and I've been playing since I was five years old.

When I'm in America I train in Boca Raton which is just north of Miami, not far from the Bollettieri Tennis Academy.

That's been really good because there's a lot of professionals who live there so you see Andy Roddick, Vince Spadea and even Chris Evert lives and trains in the area.

I've always wanted to be a professional and hopefully, after a couple of recent wins in Barbados and Guadeloupe, I'm on my way to getting there.

I'm not 15 until May but the reason I play in these tournaments is to play at a higher level.

It's pretty common in the tennis world. I'm playing against girls the same age as me or, even now, maybe a year younger.

In ITF junior tournaments you don't get prize money, it's all for points and trophies. The higher level the tournament, the more points you get.

I'm pretty new to under-18 tournaments but now I want to play more of them to climb the rankings and get in the junior Grand Slams. Starting with the French Open.

Perfectionist

Am I a typical tennis teenager? Well I'm competitive but I'm nice about it. You can't be competitive all the time.

You've got to let it go sometimes. I get down but usually it's not for a long time. I'm quite a positive person.

I do show quite a lot of emotion on court - sometimes too much in a negative way - but I'll pump my fists and shout "C'mon" after a good shot.

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41060000/jpg/_41060629_jade203.jpg Jade says she likes to show emotion on the court

And I can be hard on myself. I'm a bit of perfectionist because I'm always striving to play better.

Even though I won the two tournaments in the last two weeks, I wasn't pleased with the way I played.

So far this season I've been playing in Costa Rica, America and I'll be heading back to Europe this week - so it's been non-stop really.

Life is pretty much a road trip at the minute, I'm fast using all the pages in my passport. I travel with my dad who is my coach.

But I enjoy it. If you lose early in a tournament you can get to see the place where you are staying.

School work

I don't go to school anymore but I'm still attached to a school near Plymouth in the UK who give me school work and exams but I mainly do it out of school.

I've already done my Maths GCSE and I'm doing my Science GCSE in June at the community college when I'm home again.

Cornwall is my home but I don't get back very often! I miss it quite a lot as my family are there and especially my mum - I don't get to see her that much.

It's very difficult to stay in touch with my friends because they have their own life and they don't see much of what I do. They think my life is great, they think I'm skiving off school all the time but they're nice about it! We're on email most of the time - I don't know what I'd do without it! When I train I'll do four hours of tennis, then fitness work, followed by school work. Barbados was great but it's not exactly a holiday.

Go Jade!

Her mactch against Marama was weird

for a set and a half Jade was golden but Marama missed quite a bit. Then Paula got her serve going and Jade started to faulter. In the final set Jade was going for her shots even more but missed more than she made.

Good to see her get a win here. hope she can qualify and get a ranking.

Sharapova is not the first female to have angered a parent who doubled as coach. Only last week Britain’s 15-year-old hopeful Jade Curtis, playing in the US Open junior tournament, appeared dismayed when her stepfather, Jason Spence, marched away from courtside midway through a first-round defeat.

Her next diary entry for BBC...

------------------------------

I'm back over in Boca Raton in Florida after the junior US Open.

Luckily the hurricanes haven't hit here too badly. It's been wet and windy and people further south in Miami had to evacuate their homes because of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita.

The images on the TV over here have been really bad, it's just been complete devastation for some people.

It's strange how it's been going on for over a month, it's almost like people have had to get used to it.

It has been shocking though, I didn't realise how bad the damage would be.

Given the events of the last month the junior US Open seems a long time ago now, but it was an eye-opener for me.

Originally I hadn't qualified for the main draw, but because I made the finals in the doubles of a Canadian tournament the week before, I got a special exemption through qualifying.

My first taste of Flushing Meadows didn't last that long - I lost in the first round to a Japanese girl - but it was good fun.

The atmosphere was the biggest difference. American fans are a bit crazy and a lot louder than English fans at Wimbledon.

They really get behind their home-based players and you probably saw that with James Blake. I really wanted him to win against Andre Agassi in the semi-finals.

My match was a close one. I lost a first set tie-break but it was a great feeling just to be part of it all.

Five-star treatment

Contrary to Wimbledon, you get to sit and eat with all the senior players.

And there's a huge lounge with video arcades and all sorts of stuff - they really look after you.

It's good when Maria Sharapova and Andre Agassi are in the same room. It makes you feel like you are closer to your goal of making it.

But I don't get wide-eyed when I see players like that, I just try and play it cool.

The other difference is that rather than the university digs you get at Wimbledon, we stayed at the Grand Hyatt hotel just off Fifth Avenue.

If you make the main draw they pay for all that. In fact Wimbledon is the only junior Grand Slam where you don't get a nice hotel!

We got a day to see New York and it was amazing just how busy and vibrant the city was.

I went to see the Statue of Liberty and Times Square. It was really cool, it felt like I was in a film.

Despite the glitz of NYC, actually playing at Flushing Meadows was the highlight.

Just having a taste of that environment has given me an appetite for more.

Another step on the ladder

I recently gained my first WTA ranking after playing a couple of $10,000 tournaments in the UK before I went to America.

I might be ranked over the 1000 mark but the ranking will help me get into more WTA tournaments in the future. Really it's the first step on the senior ladder.

In the meantime my junior ranking is 78 and I need to get to the top 64 to make the main draw in the Grand Slams next year.

There's a Grade A tournament coming up in Japan which is the equivalent of a Grand Slam so if I do well hopefully I can get into that grouping.

I'll let you know how I get on in a couple of weeks in my last diary of the season.

Well, he just seems to be a bit too pushy and has caused a rift between her and the LTA about funding. At the US Open last year he threatened to take her off the court for getting down on herself. He's no Damir Dokic but I don't see how he's a good influence on her.

Jade is going to play exclusively challlenger tournaments until Roland Garros to "toughen" her up. I think this a great idea and I'm looking forward to see what successes it will bring. Her first tournament starts at the $10K Taupo, New Zealand in a couple days. Go Jade! :bounce:

She's also playing doubles with Kramperova...I'm not sure if they're in the final qualifying round or if they've already qualified and just haven't been placed in the main draw yet though...

They won their opening doubles qualifying 4-0 4-0 though... :worship:

Shes an all round player really, plays mainly at the baseline but comes into net to volley a bit. She has a decent first serve but a slow second serve. or it was slow in summer 2005. She must be around 5'0/5'1 tall so shes small but shes very physically fit. Great mover around the court. Plays quite aggressive for such a small person her forehand can be up and down.

2 things which bode well is that shes an all court player and a great mover. she can always improve her serve and her power much like in the Justine Henin-Hardenne way.

Nah, she's a little bit taller than that (every inch counts). I think I read somewhere that she's about 5'3/5'4. Hopefully this is the start of a great run!

"Baker Into Semis
New Zealand's Leanne Baker has won through to the semifinal of the US$10,000 ASB International women's Futures in Wellington.

Baker, 25 and ranked at 428 easily dispatched Britain's top junior Jade Curtis 6-0 6-3 to book a place in the semifinals where she will face eighth seed Lisa D'Amelio of Australia.

Baker's slice and spin style of play was too much for the British teenager who tried to hit the cover off every ball and was quickly found wanting.

"She (Curtis) was like a pocket rocket...she was so quick around the court. The match went according to plan but I don't think people like playing my slice game it's something they don't come across very often," said Baker who has now won eight matches in a row after taking out the Taupo Futures title last Sunday.

The Kiwi fifth seed has seen he semifinal opponent play on a number of occasions and is hoping rain stays away from the match.

"It will be an interesting match. I will have to think about how I play her. She comes into net a lot. I'm hoping it will be played outdoors."

Baker's match against Curtis ended just as the heavens opened forcing spectators and players indoors where Wellington professional Paula Marama will take on top seed Mari Tanaka of Japan this evening."
