Justine Henin-Hardenne reached the top of tennis today. The reigning Roland Garros and U.S. Open champion defeated Jelena Dokic, 6-0, 6-4, to win the Swisscom Challenge championship in Zurich and succeed compatriot Kim Clijsters as the new No. 1 ranked player on the WTA Tour.

"It was a dream of mine as a child," said Henin-Hardenne, who became the 13th women to attain the top spot since the WTA Tour rankings were established in 1975.

Henin-Hardenne’s initial reign at the top will be short-lived. The WTA announced that the 21-year-old Belgian will only the No. 1 rank for a week as she has withdrawn from next week’s Generali Open in Linz, Austria and will lose the ranking points she earned for winning that tournament title last year.

Surrendering only four points in the first set, Henin-Hardenne stormed through the set in 15 minutes to win it at love.

The 20-year-old Dokic, who has struggled in a season-long slump that has seen her rank plummet from a career-high No. 4 last September to its current No. 25, had three break chances in the second set, but could not convert.

It was the eighth tournament title of the year for Henin-Hardenne.
