Sofia was a $100.000 WTA event (quite a lot these days) and same prize category as San Diego    but next year on her 2nd edition was downgraded as a $50.000 tournament and then disappeared

Yes, however Silvia then scored back-to-backs wins over Conchita in 2001, 6-2 6-2, & 6-4 6-1. She learnt that the best way to beat Martinez was to attack the net on Martinez's slice and try to move her around. This year, Conchi won again, 6-2 6-4, but the match went for 2hrs.
Its funny how there Conchita could really dominate these players. I watched her beat Pierce 6-1 6-1 once, & was stunned at how frustrated Pierce was. She had no pace & all her shots were landing near the fence that day.

Not true: Chris Evert beat Martina Navratilova 60 60 in the final at Amelia Island in 1981, a result that is scratched across my heart but was also allegedly the match that finally kicked Nav's ass into gear...
