According to a poster in GM (who I think lives in Hong Kong) Venus has committed to play the exhibition (it's the same week as the Hopman Cup)
This year it will be mixed competition 4 Guys and 4 Gals.
Along with VENUS, Maria Sharapova, Roger and JCF have committed so far ..

This is the tourney Agassi usually plays in also. Jennifer won it in 2002 as a side note, however it is usually the week of Sydney or the week before, but with the schedule change that might now be the Hopman Cup's week!!??

Oh and Venus played this tourney in 99, she beat Steffi in the Final or along the way at least!

I think Agassi usually plays the Melbourne CBA exhibition.

Ferrero, Federer and Venus for post-SARS Hong Kong exhibition

Hong Kong, Oct 14: Top-ranked Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero, Wimbledon champions Roger Federer of Switzerland and American Venus Williams will headline a post-SARS exhibition tennis tournament next January, organizers said today.

The eight-person field - four men and four women - will also include rising Russian star Maria Sharapova, said tournament spokeswoman Semeul Shing, while the remaining players will be announced later.

Shing said organizers changed the format of the traditionally women's event to raise its profile - part of a $1 billion Hong Kong dollar (US$128 million) effort to revitalize the territory that was hard hit by the SARS outbreak between March and June.

The Hong Kong government will cover the tournament's losses up to HK$3.5 million (US$448,718)

The men and women will play in separate knockoff singles competitions, and all players will take part in a mixed doubles contest, Shing said.

The tournament will take place from Jan 8 to 10, ahead of the Australian Open, the first grand slam tournament of 2004.

Well that means Venus won't play any WTA tournament prior to the AO!

Which is smart, if she's trying to get the protected seeding. Plus, should she be rusty, there's no better place to get rid of the rust then an exhibition. I'd rather her play and find her game before playing for points on the WTA.

And actually, I think Kournikova beat Capriati for the "title" in 2002

This is so cool. I usually get coverage of the
HK exhibition match on local tv here in Singapore
in January. It was aired live for a couple years;
but this year it was a couple of weeks delayed.

I'll post my reviews of it for you guys. The quality
of the matches oddly enough are really high. It's
not that lighthearted. I've seen ED and Jenn pound
the covers off tennis balls in Hong Kong. LOL

I'm sure you'll all post the pics of Venus when
she's in HK. The organizers really get into it
the spirit of the event with all these neat
things like Lion Dancing, fire crackers, dressing the
players up in those cool Chinese silk dresses etc..

Something to look forward to, and a nice way to
start the 2004 tennis season.

Apparently Jennifer is out of the exhibiton, citing a back injury (Jennifer may be doubtful for the Aus Open)

Chanda has replaced Jennifer in the singles and Martina Navratilova will play mixed doubles with Roger Federer.

The new draw is

Venus vs Chanda

Elena vs Maria

Venus ready for Olympic challenge

January 07 2004 at 11:00AM

Hong Kong - Venus Williams leapt to the defence of tennis as an Olympic sport in Hong Kong on Wednesday, saying she planned to defend her 2000 crown in this summer's Athens Games.

Two-time Wimbledon and US Open winner Williams, who hits the comeback trail in Hong Kong this week after nearly six months off the courts, saidstriking gold in Sydney four years ago was a career highlight.

"I love the Olympics, personally," said Williams. "I had a wonderful experience in Sydney. I definitely count it as the most treasured moment of my career. And if I have the opportunity I will be in Athens."

The 23-year-old former world number one was responding to Belgian rival Kim Clijsters, who questioned whether tennis should be an Olympic sport after deciding to skip Athens.

'I'm ready for the Australian Open'
Williams is playing her first tournament here this week since being beaten by sister Serena in the 2003 Wimbledon singles final, and declared herself fully fit after six months dogged by injury and personal tragedy.

Williams finished 2003 ranked outside the top 10 for the first time in six years, slumping to 11th after an abdominal injury wrecked her season.

A disappointing year on court was overshadowed by her troubles off it, when half-sister Yetunde Price was shot dead in Los Angeles last September.

Williams said the problems of 2003 were firmly behind her as she looked towards the new season.

"Sometimes life throws you punches and you have to get up," she said. "Because if you don't get up, people will walk on you."

Williams said though she felt 100 percent as she prepares for the Australian Open, which gets underway on January 19, she had opted for a more gentle build-up by playing an exhibition event instead of a full-scale tournament.

"I feel I've made a really complete recovery," she said. "It took much longer than I could ever have expected.

"At this juncture I'm most concerned with being healthy and I think playing here is the best platform for me to come back and play some matches and get some good competition.

"I haven't tested myself to any degree as far as tournament play, so this is a nice place to figure out if I'm up to it.

"But in my heart I know that I am. I'm ready for the Australian Open."

Williams laughed off questions she might retire from tennis early.

"Why do I have to retire so soon? Everyone wants to retire me but I want to keep playing," said Williams. "I'll be staying around for a while."

She revealed that Serena, who like Venus has not played since Wimbledon, will be fit for the Australian Open despite pulling out of this week's Hopman Cup in Perth.

"I've spoken to Serena and she's going to be in Melbourne," said Williams.

Williams is due to play Chanda Rubin at Hong Kong's Victoria Park on Thursday, with Russia's Elena Dementieva and Maria Sharapova in the other side of the draw.

Switzerland's Roger Federer and Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain play in the men's tournament, which also features Max Miryni of Belarus and the Netherlands' Martin Verkerk. - Sapa-AFP
