it's less than a grand for one eye here in texas....but there are like, three different doctors in dallas alone who perform the surgery....lots of competition keeps the prices down.

I wore glasses for a year when I was younger but now I've got contacts. My parents made me wear glasses for a year saying that I would appreciate contacts more if I knew the alternative. And they were right. I love my contacts, I see so much better with them. Occasionally if I'm really tired I'll wear my glasses but other than that, never!

Good to know some Americans do have a taste similar to mine. I always get the impression of American as typical ms style people. I prefer minimalistic, timeless design, no frills, no lace, no curly things, just straight lines, nice real materials, no fakes, no kitch, respect for the really old stuff, not trying to imitate old things, don't want fake old things, antique and modern design can look great together...

IKEA is very convenient. When you're just starting out and don't have the money yet for expensive furniture, it's perfect. And it's not as if it's all rubbish. Some things can last a very long time.

Colin B
Oct 13th, 2003, 05:22 PM
yeah tine but i don't think ikea products are great quality products. they're just cheap/different.

They're not that bad actually, DD, when you look around at some of the stuff that is available (certainly in UK shops lik DFS or Courts) that is made of chipboard and formica but costs twice as much as an Ikea product made from real solid pine, beech, birch etc.

I'm sitting at a solid pine computer table that was bought for less than the amount it would cost to buy the timber to make it (there was a screw missing from the flat pack and one of the Allen keys was the wrong size but that's beside the point.LOL) and it's a really nice design too.

alexusjonesfan
Oct 13th, 2003, 05:42 PM
IKEA is awesome for students. It's kind of scary actually, it's become a fad for students in Toronto to buy their stuff at IKEA. One of my friends won't go there because she fears some kind of brainwashing takes place upon entering the store. I bought all (yes ALL) the furniture for my apartment at IKEA...it's pretty basic and minimalistic (the stuff I look for anyway) and so should age well (though you can never be sure) and you don't have to worry about conflicting styles/designs etc...everything goes with everything else.

The only problem is, pretty much every student apartment in Toronto looks like a page from the IKEA catalogue (all minimalist and geometric and imitations of Bahaus)
:D

My eyes were almost perfect before, but this computer that they have me using is really doing a number on them. I can't read signs from far away anymore, and sometimes things are blurry, especially at night. I never wanted to be glasses girl, but it appears to be in my near future.

Colin B
Oct 13th, 2003, 10:34 PM
when i was a student, it was considered gauche to have ikea...it was pretty much understood that those who had ikea were either disowned or euro (mainly because the euro's found it more convenient to just purchase there knowing they wouldn't stay long.)

Strange; over here it's becoming a sort of Bourgeois standard to shop at Ikea. It's the place where the rich kid's parents would go to kit them out. The poorer students would buy old stuff from junk shops and strip it down (with Garl...nah, too easy!).
Perhaps, as Tine says they sell different stuff over there. :)

Rocketta
Oct 13th, 2003, 11:11 PM
Oh I've been a glasses girl since the 4th grade. :)

Although I really needed them in the 3rd.. My grades went from A's & B's to C's and D's at the end of grade 3. I started out the 4th making straight F's. I made F's and C's in Math for 3 marking periods (half the year) until I got glasses. I luckily pulled my grades up and passed with D's and a B in Math. :)

I hate hate hate contacts. There is nothing more painful then when dirt or hair is on your contact and then you stick it on your eye. :smash: :help:

Of course I read your post poppet, I always do; every word!
But you were still implying that Ikea has a reputation for 'cheap and tacky'. I'm merely pointing out that here, for the most part, their reputation is for 'quality (for flatpack) at a reasonable cost'.
Their Customer Services, however are a long running joke - if you have a problem, prepare for rudeness, prevarication and a sore head from banging it against the wall!
