Well, the final race of the season is here and both the WDC and WCC are still up for grabs.

Can Michael Schumacher score the required 1 point to become a six-time world champion, or will Kimi spoil his plans?

Ferrari are 3 points ahead of Williams in the WCC. Juan Pablo and Ralf will be trying to put the disappointment of the US GP behind them as they try to win the first WCC for WIlliams since 1997.

Also, in a shock announcement, Jacques Villeneuve will not be competing in Japan. I certainly hope that this is not the end of his F1 career.

Anyway, practice is currently underway. I wish a safe weekend to everybody.

Go Juan Pablo!!!

Go Ralf!!!

Go Williams!!!

Jenson Button had a massive engine failure, so he only completed 9 laps.

Montoya had technical problems and also completed only 9 laps.

Once again, Renault and Toyota have both cars in the top 10. However, I think that we'll have to wait until tomorrow to get a better idea of which teams will be strong.

BTW, I expect Takuma Sato to perform well here in front of his home crowd.

Also, in a shock announcement, Jacques Villeneuve will not be competing in Japan. I certainly hope that this is not the end of his F1 career.

This was apparently his decision following the announcement that his contract was not to be renewed for 2004. Villeneuve's manager, Craig Pollock phoned BAR team chairman, David Richards on Thursday to say the Canadian didn't want to compete.
The problem is: no team who might want to sign him would not be able to afford his £11m ($19m) asking fee.

One-lap qualifying sux  Everybody should have the opportunity to drive in the same conditions. It might make the grid look interesting, but it is a good way to destroy the championship. They should go back to having 12 laps. I want to see drivers over the limit on their hot-laps, instead of trying not to ruin their race by wrecking the car.

I hope that Ralf can battle through the field to score some points for the WCC. He showed in Hungary that he can overtake, but he generally stays behind other cars for a LONG time.

Anyway, the race should be pretty interesting, especially if there is no rain.

rain-affected Japanese Grand Prix qualifying has handed Kimi Raikkonen a crucial advantage over Michael Schumacher in the climax to the Formula One season.
The Finn begins Sunday's race eighth on the grid while the Ferrari of Schumacher is back down in 14th.

The German driver's team-mate Rubens Barrichello took pole in his Ferrari, in a time of one minute 31.73 seconds.

Both Raikkonen and Schumacher posted good times in Friday's session and began Saturday final qualifying in fifth and second places respectively.

But light drizzle came down just as Raikkonen left the pits to begin his qualifying run.

After the first split he was already a second down and by the next he had lost another 0.5secs.

If I win it will be good for Michael and the championship
Rubens Barrichello after taking pole
Ironically, team-mate Coulthard, who was in the spare car after Raikkonen had taken his as a result of an earlier practice incident, set a quicker time after following the Finn out of the pits.
Schumacher, who needs just a point to secure a record sixth championship, was next out and could only manage a time of 1.34.302, over a second slower than Raikkonen and nearly three seconds down on team-mate Barrichello.

Barrichello's pole is a big boost for Ferrari in their race for the constructors' championship.

Nearest challengers Williams, who are three points behind, have Juan Pablo Montoya on the front row with a time nearly 0.7secs slower than the Brazilian.

Barrichello was delighted with his efforts which he believes could help both his team-mate and employer.
"If I win it will be good for Michael and the championship so I will see what I can do," said the Brazilian.

"This is the qualifying system we have and it can work either way.

"The conditions were very misty and difficult so we will have to see what happens on Sunday as we have to remember the constructors' championship."

Montoya, whose title challenge fell away at Indianapolis, still has the chance of finishing second but said he was concentrating on the constructors' championship.

"It is important for me to win the race, that will help the team," said the Colombian.

"I am sure Ralf [Schumacher, his team-mate] will be able to make up lots of positions because he will have the power advantage. It is when he gets up to seventh that it will become more difficult."

Ralf Schumacher, who went out for qualifying second last, will start from the back after a spin during his qualifying run.

Joining him is Jarno Trulli, who was quickest on Friday. The Italian opted not to attempt a qualifying lap as a result of the conditions.

Toyota drivers Cristiano da Matta and Oliveir Panis took the second row, while Renault's Fernando Alonso joins Australian Mark Webber in his Jaguar a row behind.

Rubens is a much better driver than he gets credit for. Do you recall 2002 at Silverstone he drove from last to second in the rain?

Yeah, that was a pretty good drive. However, his Bridgestones were 2 seconds per lap faster than the Michelin runners, so he was able to overtake a ton of cars when it started to rain. He also had a spin near the end of the race and then Montoya overtook him after they both exited the pits. I think that his best race was Austria 2002. It's a pity the race ended the way it did .

Congrats to Michael!! :)

Race was a bit of a disappointment really, especially since I missed the start. I thought it started at 8 a.m here... :fiery:

Interestingly, they showed a review of the season after the race, and there was an interview with Kimi after his "win" was given back to Fisi in Brazil. And he said something like:

"I have no problem, it´s fair. So long as the 2 points don´t cost me come the end of the season."

Oh, the irony!! :tape:
Good point, although that would have put them level and Michael would have won anyway as he won more races.

Not to take anything away from Kimi. He was just three points away from the 2003 title despite driving (what was in effect) the 2002 car. Remember all those statements from McLaren - 'New car by Brazil, New car at Silverstone, then Germany.....' They claimed it was going to beat everyone but it never appeared! It must have been a pile o' shite!
