Miss Lena beat Fabiola Zuluaga, Queen of Bogota, in the 1st round 6-2 6-4.

Udachi Lena.

This win will put Lena back in the Top 30!

Lena will lose to Myskina next round.

Oct 7th, 2003, 10:56 PM
There's no webcam or I'd make sure to watch it.
Nastya still has a match to win. Coming off a tier I win, she might not be as sharp as she was in Moscow.
Now that Lena's healthy, it's too bad the season's ending.
Off topic, but where does Lena start in 2004?

ally baker
Oct 8th, 2003, 12:16 AM
I figure that Lena will play Gold Coast and Sydney like she did last year.

Lena will only be playing Zurich, and Quebec for the rest of this year.

Oct 8th, 2003, 12:21 AM
It seems as if the mono has ruined the whole year for Lena.
So I like that she's playing doubles. She must feel good now.
If Lena can end the season feeling like she can beat the top players, it should make November and December more fun for her. Anticipating next year.

If Lena does beat Nastya on Thursday, we have to discuss Olga B.

ally baker
Oct 8th, 2003, 12:46 AM
I'd rather Lena feel like she can beat the lower players when she plays like shit.

Oct 8th, 2003, 01:18 AM
This week we both want Lena to beat good players.
But in Quebec, Lena will have to beat some players ranked beyond the top 50 to get to Maria.
If Lena can beat Masha and hold up that trophy to end her year, that's the best way to do it.
Of course, if Lena wins the tourny and Masha loses early, that's ok.

ally baker
Oct 8th, 2003, 04:35 AM
I don't think there's that many top 50 players in Quebec now...

All winnable matches for Lena, including possibly Maria in the final... but that's far away.

Let's hope Myskina starts playing like crap again so Lena has a chance of winning her next match.

Note for Lena... incase you read this board, honey:

Nastya says she's tired.

Listen to me, hon... I know what's best.

Lena could really use this win. Another match against Lindsay would be great. But I won't look ahead. Nastya's going for 10 straight.

I really want Lena to take out that Martina/Cara team. I want wins!

If Lena does read this, she must think we're crazy.

Oct 8th, 2003, 10:44 PM
Moscow felt so different. I knew if Lena played Nastya I could watch the match. I also thought the winner might win the tournament. Now, I'll know when I get home. And the winner has a tough road ahead.
Lena, do what Leena says - please cut down the UE's and make Nastya hit winners.

She already thinks I'm crazy. But, she's too nice and sweet to say it. Yay.

Oct 9th, 2003, 12:59 AM
Lena knows she has a true fan, that's the important thing.
Winning tomorrow is also an important thing.
If Lena's only playing two or so more tournaments, every match is vital.
She has to not give points away. Then, Lena has a great chance.
And with Lindsay just coming back, who knows how far Lena can go this week?

ally baker
Oct 9th, 2003, 01:44 AM
I really don't care if Lena wins tomorrow.

The big thing for her now is to try being consistent. That means winning matches she should.

1) That builds her confidence.

2) It helps her ranking a lot... since she has many 1st round losses counting towards her Best 17.

A decent goal for Lena would be to get seeded for Aussie Open. She's right on the bubble, since she'll be 29 after Filderstadt... and is defending QF Luxembourg, and SF Gold Coast until then.

Oct 9th, 2003, 02:21 AM
I agree. Lena should be able to get herself a win against inferior opponents, even if she's not at her best.
I also like the level of play Lena showed in both Capriati matches. Consistency of play at that level will beat most of the top 15.

But I believe in one match at a time. And for Lena, this match is the next match. And I hope she plays to the Capriati level.
If Nastya wins, I want it to be a very high level match. One that means they both can be serious factors in Melbourne.

Oct 9th, 2003, 02:41 PM
Lena won 62 63 :)

well done Lena :)

Oct 9th, 2003, 02:57 PM
Great win Lena :D :bounce:

Maybe Nasyta was tired or whatever, but who cares. Lena took her chance and thats all that matters :bigclap:
Well done Lena :)

Congrats Lena, I'm pleasantly surprised.

You're salvaging this disastrous year you've had... and proving that when you're healthy... you are a Top 20 player. :)

Keep fighting in the next round! I know you have this phobia of always losing the in the QF's... but let's break it for this tournament!

Drive your Porsche to the title! Yeah, that was lame... but, oh well.

Lena will play Lindsay Davenport for the 5th time in the Quarterfinal.

As we all know, Lindsay has beat Lena every time they have played... all 3-setters, except their match at Indian Wells this year, where Lena played terribly.

Can Lena beat Lindsay this time? Maybe. It's about damn time Lena beats her.

Oct 9th, 2003, 08:51 PM
2 & 3 sounds about right if Lena plays her game. Nice win there.
What happened in the Olga B. match? To beat Nastya and lose to Olga seems really unusual.

ally baker
Oct 9th, 2003, 08:58 PM
Lena beating Lindsay 2 & 3? I wish...

I'm guessing Lena just played her usual error-filled match against Olga in Sydney.

Oct 9th, 2003, 09:04 PM
I mean 2 & 3 today. Nastya's best shot is her backhand. Lena's is better. Lena's whole game is better, imo.
Plus Nastya is tired.

Lindsay, I won't even guess what the score will be. But a win is certainly possible.

Oct 9th, 2003, 09:26 PM
I miss the webcam. Even if Lena plays Saturday, I can only get scores.
Watching that Jennifer match was so much fun. The third set was so close. That was great. I want to see these matches.
When is Lena ever on tv, twice a year maybe.

Oct 9th, 2003, 10:28 PM
Davai Lena :bounce: you can do it :D

Udachi Lena.

Hopefully she whacks more winners than Lindsay.

I honestly don't think Lena has a chance in hell of winning this... if Lindsay is healthy. I suppose Lindsay is fine... because it would be stupid for her to play here, otherwise.

Oct 9th, 2003, 10:57 PM
Lindsay 6-3 6-1

Oct 9th, 2003, 11:11 PM
Lindsay is a really good player. So smooth in her strokes. But I think on the ground and at the net, Lena can play her shot for shot.
I think the difference is Lindsay's serve. Lena has to hold. If Lena gets breakpoints, she needs to play those points well.
I expect a close match. And I want that doubles win tomorrow also.

ally baker
Oct 9th, 2003, 11:12 PM
I want Lena to lose in doubles... because she shouldn't be playing with Grandma.

Why doesn't Lena play with another Russian girl? She's friends with most of them.

Oct 9th, 2003, 11:14 PM
If Grandma is on Lena's side of the net, who's that elderly person on the other side of the net?

Maybe Lena will play with Sveta next year.

ally baker
Oct 9th, 2003, 11:15 PM
Els still looks older than Martina... despite being 12-13 years younger.

I want to see Lena team with Nadya... 2 6-feet Russian girls with bad tempers. :hearts:

ally baker
Oct 9th, 2003, 11:18 PM
No... don't want Lena with Sveta, either.

No ugly partners.

There's 123423 other attractive Russinas out there.

Oct 9th, 2003, 11:20 PM
Nadya and Meghann are playing well now.
Masha is 6-feet tall. Lena has more of a figure. I think Lena could get a lot of attention playing with Sharapova.
I think Lena is better looking. People will see it when they're side by side.

ally baker
Oct 9th, 2003, 11:22 PM
I wouldn't mind Lena and Maria... :hearts:

They probably wouldn't win much right away, but it's doubles... so who cares?

Oct 9th, 2003, 11:25 PM
You're right about that. I read that Tammy had to tell Maria where to stand in Tokyo.
They're both IMG. Lena is about as good a partner as Masha can get.
No ugly partners. I'll remember that.

Oct 9th, 2003, 11:26 PM
lena/nadia would be a great team.

ally baker
Oct 9th, 2003, 11:29 PM

Doubles is all about style.

Who's the most memorable doubles team of the past few years?

Hingis & Pornikova

Doubles isn't about the tennis... it's about wasting time, avoiding practice, and having fun.

Oct 9th, 2003, 11:34 PM
Then it's Masha. Maybe they'll meet in Quebec and become friends.
If Lena doesn't go deep in the doubles draw, it's more time to rest for singles.
A healthy Lena in 2004, I'm looking forward to it.

ally baker
Oct 9th, 2003, 11:41 PM
I think Lena and Masha are friends already... you'd be amazed how Lena gets along with everyone.

I think Vera is the only one that doesn't along with Lena... and that's probably because their personalities are vastly different.

Oct 9th, 2003, 11:47 PM
First I want Lena to kick Masha's tail in singles. I want Lena to know she's the best Russian when this season is over.
It's two things - staying healthy and being consistent. The experience and good judgement on shot selection will come.

As Lena starts to get famous next year, she can't be nice to everybody. She has to be selfish about her free time.

Oct 10th, 2003, 01:33 AM
I'm glad ESPN televised that US Open warmup event in New Haven.
I never would have known how good a player that Lena is.
Not only is she good, Lena's style of play is exciting. Winners off the backhand, charging the net early in points, it's just fun to watch.

So Melbourne is important. If Lena wins and wins, she will get on ESPN eventually. And I want another tape of Lena for my collection.

Oct 10th, 2003, 02:41 AM
Masha is still 16. She can't play a full schedule.
Anna K. is coming back next year. Lena would get on show courts with Anna.
Anna can still play okay doubles.

Oct 10th, 2003, 03:54 AM
This is a big match for Lena. She needs to keep from making UE's early in the points. She has to make Lindsay work for points.
Lindsay is going to win some points on her serve. And hit some groundstroke winners.
Lena has to play steady and attack the net when the opportunity is there.
I want two wins from Lena tomorrow. Then we have a fun weekend coming.

Moving on... Lena plays noted elf, Justine Henin-Hardenne in the Semifinal of Filderstadt.

Justine has beat Lena a bunch of times, with Lena never getting a win... but many of these matches were in 2001, when Lena was "Queen Slump".

Lena has never been able to even win a set of Juju.

But, Lena never beat Lindsay before... so maybe Lena can do her magic once again!

Go Lena!!!!!!!!

Oct 10th, 2003, 04:10 PM
Lena booked her biggest ever wins the past 2 weeks. Though it was in an exhibition she bt. V. Williams. Good signs Lena don't have an off-day against Justine. You have the game to trouble anyplayer.

Oct 10th, 2003, 08:52 PM
Stupidly looking forward...

If Lena beats Justine... she's back in the Top 20 at #19... behind Patty at #18, who will surely be dropping next week.

Please win, Lena. :)

Oct 10th, 2003, 08:53 PM
Justine is THE best player in this draw. This is no time to get optimistic.
In 2005, then Lena wins this easy.

ally baker
Oct 10th, 2003, 08:57 PM
I'm not being optimistic. I think Lena will lose. I've thought that all tournament long, and it's working. :)

Oct 10th, 2003, 08:59 PM
That's good. If Lena wins, she's beaten Justine, Lindsay, Jennifer, and Nastya. Plus Schnyder and Zuluaga.
Is that even possible?

ally baker
Oct 10th, 2003, 09:01 PM
Anna did that before... beating 4 Top 10's in 10 days.

It would be quite an accomplishment... since before Moscow... Lena beat a whole 2 players in the Top 10... and both Dokic and Conchita tanked the match.

Oct 10th, 2003, 09:05 PM
I just don't want to expect too much too quickly.
Lena has already had a big week. To win tomorrow would be a real statement to the whole tour.
I think it would put pressure on Lena.

Oct 10th, 2003, 10:33 PM
Lena has had some amazing wins over top players the past few days. And all her wins this week have been really convincing, and in straight sets.

Its so annoying that none of these Filderstadt wins have been on TV.

However Lena's should be first match televised tomorrow against Justine. So I really want to see her win. However Justine is still in "Terminator" mode...

Oct 10th, 2003, 10:34 PM
Now that I've had some time to think about it, I realize that if Lena wins on Saturday, that means on Sunday she'd be going for one of the greatest weeks in tennis history.
Kim, Justine, Lindsay, and Nastya, in a row.

Oct 11th, 2003, 01:54 AM
The last time I saw Justine play, she was winning the US Open. And winning the last 5 games in her semifinal while cramping was amazing stuff.
Plus, Justine lost to a Russian in Leipzig, so I knew she'd be ready for Elena D.
And she's going to be ready for Lena.
But if Lena plays her game, like she has this week, this will be a good match.
(go lena)

Oct 11th, 2003, 02:57 AM
Strategy for Lena:

You need to play conservatively aggressive.

Don't try for crazy winners... but do hit with power. Justine doesn't like being rushed on her shots... and even though her backhand is beautiful, if you rush her, she'll hit a lot of errors.

Justine has a low 1st serve %... so your chance to do what I said on the 2nd serves. Don't go for crazy winners in the corners... just pressure her. Long, deep balls in the middle of the court... and especially that backhand that drives through the court. Don't let her get any rhythm.

I really think Lena has the game that can hurt Justine... she just needs to play well, not get frustrated, and play smart... and she might have a chance. :)

Oct 11th, 2003, 03:14 AM
Lena is putting a pretty good late season run together.
Suddenly, Fed Cup and Olympics look very possible.
Lots of good stuff look possible.
But Justine is top class, I think better than Lindsay.
I think another key is if Lena can stay focused all match. I think that's a strength of Justine's.
Just on strokes, I don't think Justine has any edge on Lena.

Oct 11th, 2003, 03:59 AM
One final thought as I go to bed.
I don't think Lena is still anywhere near the player she will become.
When you get a chance, watch that Capriati match from New Haven again.
Lena is so good on some points. And then some really sloppy stuff.
As Lena cuts down the UE's, and tweaks the rest of her game, I see potential greatness.
I think the strokes are there.

Oct 11th, 2003, 12:12 PM
COME ON LENA! YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!! :bounce:

Oct 11th, 2003, 01:18 PM
Justine is very, very tough. But Lena sees the level she must get to in order to contend for the majors.
A very good two weeks.

Oct 11th, 2003, 01:19 PM
Lena lost 2-6 4-6 :bigcry:

Too many UE in the 1st set :( 2nd set was much better, if only she would have taken the BP at 4-4
Nevertheless a great tourney, with wins vs Nastya and Davy :)
Keep this up Lena :):)

Oct 11th, 2003, 01:23 PM
It's more than one breakpoint. Justine is able to stay focused on every point for an entire match.
Lena can't do that, yet.
People used to say Justine was a choke. Players mature.
Lena needs this experience.

ally baker
Oct 11th, 2003, 02:07 PM
Exactly... and I think that's really the only difference from Lena, and the Top 5 players.

She has the physical game to get there... but mentally, and tactically, she's not there yet.

Justine had these problems when she started, also... and the only way to learn is from your experiences in these matches, and how you react from them.

Lena is still maturing... she's grown leaps and bounds from just 2 years ago, but she still has a way to go. We will see bigger and better things from her.

Oct 11th, 2003, 02:21 PM
Wouldn't it have been great if Lena was playing for a Porsche tomorrow?
Lena had three straight love holds to get to 4-3, then just missed a bp for 5-3.
So Lena played well for most of the second.
I hope Lena continues to play this well in Zurich.

Oct 11th, 2003, 04:26 PM
The draw in Zurich is on their website. Lena plays a qualifier, (maybe Sveta), then the winner of Suarez-Hantuchova, then probably Dementieva, then Justine.
Lena has to win matches in which she is the better player. This draw will test that.
But I want Dementieva.
