What do you think is the most ideal time for the Australian Open to be held?

I think pushing it back 2 or 3 weeks would be fine... giving the players 5 or 6 weeks to get into the swing is enough IMHO...

An advantage of what we have now is that all the tournaments are in Australia/V V V Close area. Giving Australia 6 weeks of tournaments before a GS would be a bit excessive IMHO. You could move the Pan Pacific and maybe another Japan tournament in this time?

why don't they get rid of some of the hardcourt events in between aus and rg (its pointless-- theres no preparation)-- add some new clay ones, squish aus and rg a little closer-- and put miami and/or indian wells b4 the aussi as warmups?

I would say when the crowds are willing to buy the tickets and the sponsors are willing to put up the money. With the amount of bucks involved players will keep coming even if they never move it.

I say change the surface to indoor carpet, and make it the last major of the year, played in mid-october.

it just seems pointless to me to have all of these indoor events and not have a major played on the same surface. (the year-end champs don't count. not a major no matter what the WTA tries to make us think).

I'd say between Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Exactly where it is, only Australian residents will understand why :)
