View Full Version : Why giving the top 4 seeds first round byes?

I always wonder if it's necessary for tier I and II tournaments to give the top 4 seeds a first round byes. I heard someone say it's to encourage to more top players to enter. But isn't it kinda strange that some players won't start playing until Thursday which is already half way through the week. It makes more sense when the draw size is 64 or bigger. Anyways, any explanations?

Well, the top players will most likely be playing in the finals or late in the tourney the previous week in a tournament so it would be kind of hard for them, if they are playing back to back tourneys, to travel to another part of the world in 1 day, get used to the site, and get used to the time there because of jetlag.

personally i don't like it. first it is leaving the 4 other spaces blank, second it reduce the chance for these top players to lose early (although it rarely happened anyways)

yeah. they shouldnt give first round byes. if they dont play they dont get the dough. so they'll play.
