View Full Version : The Scottish Players Thread

Just thought I would set up a cheering thread for the Scottish girls. I still love the other British girls too, but the Scots have something special! So please post any updates you have in relation to:
Elena Baltacha, Karen Paterson, Lyndsay Reilly, Kirsty McRae, Mhari Neish, Frances Hendry, Mhari Brown, Nicola Allan, Liana Park, Susannah Roy, Sarah McFadyen, Nicola Slater, Heather Lockhart, Jenna Cockburn or any other Scottish player!

Monica_Rules: Karen started the year in around 650-700, so its a great climb. You can see the progression of all the Scots players on TennisScotland.org (http://www.tennisscotland.org)

linzi changed her schedule this year, staying in britain over the summer, it really hasn't paid off. hopefully next year she will spend the summer on the us/canadian hardcourt challengers and pick up a few wins, she's much better than 1028 in the world, she just needs to find some consistency.

Karen Paterson has won two round, and plays Chantal Coombs in the quarters! :)

On a side note Karen lost to Akgul Amanmuradova in the first round of $25K Mumbai last week :(

I am led to believe that Elena returns in December to play British Tour Events :)

Nov 13th, 2003, 10:00 PM
Karen beat Cahntal in straight sets, and does play Akgul in the semi's. Hopefully she can get revenge for last weeks defeat ;)

Good Luck Karen :D

but a good weeks, and another few points, thats Tipton and Hull from the beginning of last year saved already, so she can rest asssured she'll stay in the top 500 until she has another chunk of points coming off in May.

I was unaware of the big jump Karen had taken in doubles, and with her career high singles, she is doing very well. She will probably take the highest ranking (although Elena is still number 1 due to her injury ranking) and is closing in on the other two in doubles. Well done Karen :yeah:

Dec 12th, 2003, 11:58 AM

Karen Paterson is playing a British Tour event in Nottingham, where she is the second seed. She has retired from her match with Hannah Grady at 3-4. I hope that Karen is OK!  :scared:

Frances Hendry played a British Tour event in November in Redbridge. She has shown a significant dip in form though, and lost to the junior (promising junior!) Michaela Ince 1-6 1-6. Any idea whether she is still playing tennis full time? It seems a long way away from when Frances won the U18 doubles with Llewellyn in the Junior Nationals.

Does anyone know whether or not Elena is playing a British Tour event before her Hull return? I heard she was but I am not sure where or when it is.

Jan 10th, 2004, 04:38 PM
she was plannign on playing nextweeks british tour event, but has pulled out. so her return will be in hull.

karen had to pull out of this weeks' event, guess she's still injured.

Jan 14th, 2004, 02:34 PM
You're right Paul, Bally pulled out of the Sutton Tour event with an ear infection. Karen Paterson is in the event as number three seed - and she has a bye and will play the winner of Helen Fritche and Claire Ricketts.

SF: Elena Baltacha vs. Kaia Kanepi

Feb 14th, 2004, 02:46 PM
Elena lost her semi final 3-6 4-6 to Kaia Kanepi  But a great week nevertheless!

In Redbridge, Elena got a main draw wild card. Karen may well sneak into quallies, she was third in that list before the wild cards to Elena and Amanda were announced, so she should get in (hopefully!).

Feb 18th, 2004, 10:12 AM
In Redbridge, both Elena and Karen received main draw wildcards :bounce:

(1) Kaia Kanepi EST vs Sophie Lefevre FRA
(WC) Elena Baltacha SCO vs (Q) Martina Muller GER
Yvonne Meusburger AUT vs Anoujska Van Exel NED
Stefanie Haidner AUT vs (6) Zuzana Kucova SVK

(4) Anne Keothavong ENG vs (WC) Karen Paterson SCO
Lina Stanciute LTU vs (Q) Anna Chakvetadze RUS
(WC) Amanda Janes ENG vs (Q) Nicole Remis AUT
Marie Geznenge BUL vs (8) Jane O'Donoghue ENG

Its a tough draw, even if Karen gets past Anne, which would be very difficult, she would face either Stanciute or Chakvetadze who are very promising juniors. If Elena gets past Muller as expected, she would most likely then play the top seed Kanepi, who beat her in the Sunderland semis last week.

Good luck to both! (and all the other Brits!) :bounce:

Update on non-Tour Scots

Nicola Allan has been unwell for some time and is currently not
competing or training. She left the LTA squad in Welwyn last January and
has now returned to school in Jordanhill. I hope Nicola gets better soon, and one day can compete again.

Mhari Brown completed a sports science degree in Arizona State uni and
is now working in the Psych dept over there. :D

Jenna Cockburn in at Moray House studying PE :)

Liana Park is doin highers and continues to play GB 18u Grand Prix level
events and ITF Group 4 events - wr 400 ish :)

Thanks to Marion Halliday at TennisScotland.org for the information!

In Athens Qualifying Elena lost in the first round to difficult Georgian player Margalita Chakhnashvili 4-6 6-0 4-6.

Karen defeated seventh seed Valentina Sassi 7-5 7-5 in R1 (a very nice result indeed! :) ) but unfortunatly lost to aforementioned Georgian Chakhnashvili 2-6 1-6

On another note, Sarah McFadyen qualified for the British Tour event in Bolton, and then defeated Lucy Warburton in the main draw 6-2 6-4 :D. She lost in round 2 to wonderkid Jade Curtis 2-6 0-6

Apr 16th, 2004, 09:23 AM
In Patras $10K Karen Paterson lost to fellow Brit Anna Hawkins in the first round 2-6 2-6. I heard she has been struggling with bronchitis this year?

Elena Baltacha beat top seed Darija Jurak 7-5 6-0 in the first round of quallies in Dinan $50K+H before losing to Paula Garcia 5-7 6-3 4-6. She then qualified for Biarritz $25K beating Lina Stanciute 3-6 6-4 7-6(4) and Antonia Matic 4-6 6-4 7-5 :D. She then beat top seed Sybille Bammer 6-2 6-3 in the main draw, before losing to Zsofia Gubacsi 3-6 5-7.

Paterson scoops Tennis Scotland Award

Karen Paterson won the Tennis Scotland Female Senior Player of the Year 2003 last month. The following is the description of why she won:

"Our winner started off the year ranked 730 and in February reached the semi final of Tipton $10,000 beating Hannah Collin in the quarterfinals. Some of her top performances for 2003 have included:

*Reaching the quarterfinals of ITF $10k events in Edinburgh and Pontevedra (Spain) and...
*Securing semi final places at $10,000 in Felixtowe and India
*Her best result in 2003 came when she secured a place in the final of the Wrexham $10,000 in August beating Hannah Collin in the quarters and....
*in October she qualified for the $25,000 in Jersey, reaching the quarter finals - beating Sophie Lefevre from France, seeded 6.

"The hard-hitting Edinburgh right hander is now based in south-west London at Sutton as part of the GB tennisgirls squad under the watchful eye of coach Sarah Hancock. She is without doubt one of the hardest working players on the tour and her high levels of dedication and commitment to excellence are a lesson to all aspiring players...
Please welcome....Karen Paterson

Congrats Karen, an excellent year! :)

Incidentally, Karen is playing Natalia Garboletto in R1 of Poza Rica $25k (Mexico). Garboletto won the $10k Morelia last week. Good luck Karen! :D

Apr 21st, 2004, 06:48 PM
lol, Karen didn't have much competition did she? but still well deserved and hopefully can pull off a good win in mexico today as it's gonna be very tough

Update on non-ranked Scots

Lyndsay Reilly - injured and awaiting surgery (knee).

Mhari Neish - still injured.

Kirsty McRae - 1st year student at Loughborough University - may be playing at Scottish Open - exams permitting.

Sarah McFadyen - won the Scottish Indoors - may be competing at the Scottish Open in beginning of May.

Nicola Allan - playing county and club matches but not international/national events.

Thanks to Karen Mercer at Tennis Scotland, the Scottish Open is the upcoming Edinburgh $10K, so it would be nice to have a couple of Scots wildcards! :)

Also, according to GBTG, Karen lost a close three setter to Natalia Garbolletto. She won the first set 6-4 and had points to lead a break in the second, before losing a close third.

Nicola lost to Amanda in the semis, but another good run.

In Surbiton, Karen lost in the final round of qualifying (she beat Homewood 6-0 6-2 in the first round), she lost to Anne-Laure Heitz 2-6 2-6  Whilst Elena got in the main draw with her injury rank, and she faces qualifier Seda Noorlander in the first round. Good luck Elena! :)

bad luck Karen, but 0.25 more points than last year, and every little helps, lol

Jun 4th, 2004, 08:31 PM
Elena has received a main draw wildcard and Karen has received a qualifying wildcard for teh DFS Classic in Birmingham! :D

Karen will be playing Roberta Vinci in the first round of qualifying :scared:

Good luck Karen! This will be a hard match....

Jun 6th, 2004, 01:45 PM
Karen lost to vinci 63 61.

But it was closer than the score suggests, and had Karen had a little more patience when hitting her shots she could have done a lot better. Vinci is a good player, but not as powerful as Karen, and when Karen's serve went in, it was great! :D But more often than not it didn't.

Hopefully Karen can build on this and do well at Wimbledon :D

Good Luck to Elena aswell tomorrow, I'll be there to cheer her on ;)

Jun 6th, 2004, 03:25 PM
thanks PDM

karen has made 1.25 more points than she did on grass last year lo. And if she gets into Wimbledon that's another 2 :)

After a wildcard debacle in which Karen was denied a wildcard into any event  she got into the Q draw anyway! Because Coombs withdrew to play a $10K  Karen plays Capucine Rousseau in the Q draw first round!

She was initially denied, after she lost to Helen Fritche in R1 in the wildcard playoff, 75 60. She and Fritche were not selected, but both are now in after Collin  and Coombs withdrew.

Elena is in maindraw as expected. She won against Tanasugarn in the Eastbourne qualies :D after she beat Jane in the first round :)

WC Karen Paterson GBR vs Capucine Rousseau FRA

Go Karen! Do us proud!

Now Karen has been denied a wildcard....AGAIN! :fiery:

Chantal Coombs is now in the OOP and the drawlist against Rousseau, so who the hell knows what is happening? It seems Karen won't get to play Wimbledon after all

Jun 14th, 2004, 11:35 PM
Nicola Slater has been busy! She played a tournament in Belfast this week.

She beat Elsa O'Riain (at college in Harvard) in the semis 6-4 6-2 :D (she had been 4-0 down in the first set) but lost to Yvonne Doyle in the final

This coupled with her previous good results in British Tour events are a nice run of form for Nicola (which stem from excellent results in American collegiate system). She will be playing the upcoming British Tour event in Portsmouth, and then she is back to America. She is hoping to join the tour full time in the near future.

She possibly will enter a playoff in August to enter a $50K qualifying draw in America, and other events to follow!

Well done and good luck, Nicola! :yeah:

*revives thread*

Elena took part in a British first round revolution at Wimbledon, getting to the second round by beating Marta Marrero. She then pushed Jennifer Capriati to 46 46.

Karen has been showing a semblence of her former self. She won through to the semi finals of the Felixstowe grass tournament, beating Lara Giltinan 36 64 76(3), Anna Hawkins 64 63 and Michelle Snyman 76(7) 36 64 before bowing out to qualifer Teodora Mircic 76(3) 36 26. She then won a round of qualifying in the $25K in Les Contamines against Van Boekel. She was less than impressive in Wrexham, where she struggled to beat wildcard Julia Bone 57 62 62 before losing to lowly Mexican Maria Jose Lopez 57 46. She needs to get her arse in gear to defend those points! ;)

Nicola Slater has returned to America.

Susie Roy entered a British Tour event in Ilkey. She won 63 75 against Rebecca Cooper in R1, then beat fifth seed Lara Alexander 61 64 in the second round before losing in the quarters 46 16 to third seed Annabel Bann.

After receiving a bye in the first round, Caitlin Steel won against Victoria Watson 63 63 before bowing out to fifth seed Anna Fitzpatrick 46 57 in the Rushbrooke Junior International.

Lyndsay Reilly retires
I am not sure if you know this already, i personally forgot to post it on here :o, but Lyndsay Reilly has officially retired from competition . She has been a good competitor for Britain and Scotland in the last few years, persevering with many injuries and getting to a career high ranking of 602. Personally, had she had a clearer run she may have got a lot higher. She takes up a coaching post at the New Generation center in Edinburgh in October, so its great she is staying in the game. Good luck Lyndsay! :D

There is also a small update on Mhari Neish. She has been on a recovery programme from a knee injury, and is beginning to acclimatise back into competition. Mhari is hoping to return to the tour in the New Year, and i hope she does!

Frances Hendry, having had to persevere with injuries and illness, will begin a tennis scholarship at Loughborough University in October. Hopefully she will participate a bit more in the national tournaments and maybe some $10Ks while she is at it, she can become the new Scottish number 3, if she puts her mind to it! Kirsty McRae is also at Loughborough, starting her second year of her tennis scholarship.

After an unfortunate run of results in junior and senior competition, Liana Park decided to take a break from competition. There is no word on when she is hoping to return. And despite rumours to the contrary, Nicola Allan will only be competing at club and county level from now on, after illness prevented her taking tennis as a career. Good luck to both Liana and Nicola.

Karen has a tougher few weeks ahead of her, after a disappointing year. She has had a couple of semis this year, including recently in Manchester (a great win over Emma Laine) but just lost a load of points when she lost in the first round of Jersey. Elena has struggled a bit since Wimbledon as well, but won a round at the Q event there, before losing to Widjaja in Q2.

Karen has been struggling of late, going to Mexico  and losing in the second round of qualifying to Jozami  in the first $25K before losing to Lopez-Herrera in R1 of the maindraw in San Luis Potosi

She is entered into the qualifying draw of the $50K in Bergamo this weekend, hurrah! She plays Celine Cattaneo in the first round, who she beat last week. Let's hope she can repeat it!

Elena has had a run of better form of late, doing well in higher tiered challengers. In the second in Poitiers ($75K) she had an impressive run of wins over Geznenge, Gerards and second seed Jugic-Salkic to qualify, and then won her R1 match against local wildcard Andrieux. She went out to Santangelo in a close three-setter.

Lyndsay Reilly is reportedly still actually hoping to return to the circuit, and is testing out her knee to competition.

Good luck to both Elena (MD) and Karen (Q) in Bergamo!
