Sarah is currently playing in the Sunderland $10k Semi-Finals, and seems to have finally found some sort of form :) Hopefully this will continue into the few British Challengers coming up! She'll be playing Glasgow $25k, Jersey $25k, Cardiff $25k & Nottingham $25k. So many opportunities to climb into the Top 300 ;)

Good luck sarah :D :worship:

Go Sarah! She plays Yvonne Meusburger in the semis so that will be tough but she can win that! Let's hope she wins the title!

Sarah lost in the semi's 6-3 6-4  But at least Sarah has won a few matches this week :) Let's hope she can do the same in Glasgow :)

Good Luck Sarah

Matea Mezak who defeated Sarah, then retires after playing 1 game against Arvidsson :fiery: A match which I'm sure Sarah would have won ;)

A very good article on Sarah this month in "British Tennis", which is the magazine for LTA advantage members. A couple of great photos too.

Sarah received a WC into the Jersey $25k, but drew the top seed, Arvidsson, in R1, and did lose, not suprisingly. But did manage to force Sofia to a 3rd set tie-break, losing it 7-5  So a very promising result from Sarah, let's hope she can improve on this in the coming weeks!

Sarah has come through qualifying in Cardiff :D and in the Main Draw will play Lucky Loser, Tvaroskova. Hopefully she can win ;)

Good Luck Sarah :)

Sarah beat Tvaroskova in straight sets 6-3 6-4 in Cardiff :D :D and will play either 7th seeded Cassoni (240) or Zaric ranked 330. Good Luck in the next round Sarah.

In the rankings these victories should make Sarah the Brit #4 above, Hannah, Helen & Karen :) Well Done!

:bounce: :bounce: Sarah is through to the Quarter-Finals after defeating the 7th seed, Casoni, in 3 sets :D  :bigclap: She will play either Bratchikova or Coombs, both qualifiers, so a good chance for Sarah to get to the Semi's ;)

Well Done & good Luck :D

Yes, it was good to see Sarah fight today. She won the first set easily enough, but seemed to be in trouble in the second, requiring the trainer. But her fighting qualities brought her through to a well-deserved place in the quarter finals.

Sarah is into the semi's :bounce: :bigclap:

She easily beat Bratchikova 6-1 6-2 :D and will play Irina Boulykina, another qualifier, for a place in the final :)

Good Luck Sarah :D It's a winnable match!

Well, judging by her performance at Cardiff, she ought to make the most of this opportunity in Nottingham, and show us just what determination she's made of! Good luck Sarah!

When i saw Sarah in wrexham i knew she had a great game just that she was making too many errors.I'm not suprised by these results at all.

I hope she can do well in Nottingham now

Sarah got a good draw against Paula Marama, ranked about 300 places below her ;) But managed to lose in straight sets 6-3 6-3

It was a pathetic performance, and Sarah looked disinterested & dejected throughout the match.

Maybe when she returns to the US in November she'll play a $50k (I think) and hopefully she can pick up some points there ;)

It shoudl be a good 2004 for Sarah with a good chance to improve the ranking & enter some bigger events!

This week Sarah is playing the $50k event in Eugene, and has already played 2 round of qualifying :)

QR1; def. Jodi Kennoyer 6-0 6-1
QR2; def. Jennifer Hopkins (1) 6-4 3-6 6-4 :D

Let's hope Sarah can keep these good results up for the rest of the event and climb closer to the Top 300 ;)

Good Luck Sarah :D :D

bump

Sarah has knocked one of her ribs out of place, which is why she had to pull out of doubles & singles in Mexico  and she has got to go and have it put back into place! lovely.

Sarah should be coming over to England for the grass events but probably won't be staying over for the $10k's afterwards.

revives tread

Sarah reached the Glasgow Semi-Finals the other week, before losing to Margit Ruutel
The week after in Sunderland, Sarah got to the 2nd round before losing to Ruutel again
And then last week in Bolton, lost in round 2 to Virginie Ayassamy  But at least she and Emily won the doubles title defeating the top seeds in the final :D :D

Good Luck for the rest of the season Sarah :D

She plays Erika Takao (JPN) (272) is Round 2 who knocked out CHAN the No 3 seed in Round 1. Sarah has played her once before at this tournament last year and beat her 6-3 6-2 although she was only 18 then and has shot up the rankings since. I think Sarah must still have the edge though.

Looking at who is left in her quarter of the draw she has a fair chance of getting to the semi now. (fingers crossed). Hope the Japanese girl doesn't get too much home advantage (no, that never happens!).

British No.5 Sarah Borwell couldn’t mark her comeback match to the tour with a victory when she lost in the first round of the $25,000 event in Valasske Mezirici on Tuesday.

The Middlesbrough 27-year-old, who was playing her first match for nearly three months after tearing a tendon in her right shoulder, went down 6-3, 7-6(7) to eighth seed Eva Hrdinova of the Czech Republic

But another step forward since her injury. She has very little to defend untill may, so if she can get consistantly to QF and Semis she should climb quite nicely. Would be good to see her reach a few finals.

Tough task in Midland 75k this week but she has a nice qualifying draw so should qualify.

"You probably won't have heard of Sarah Borwell. A quick survey of the office resulted only in utter silence and a blank look of incomprehension and vacant idiocy. But that's what happens when you work alone at home.

Sarah Borwell is a tennis player - the British No6, to be precise, ranked 282nd in the world. At a time when you can't move for a profile of Roger Federer or a shot of Ana Ivanovic in a bikini (thank God it's not the other way around) it is worth remembering that not every match is played on Wimbledon's Centre Court, and not every player sprinkles diamonds on their cornflakes. Sarah Borwell is a case in point. And, at 28, she is unlikely to make a fortune from the game.

The plan for this blog was to write about the interminable grind of being the British No6 and world No282. A life of cheap motels, departure lounges, boredom and drudgery, of failed ambition and self-delusion. An existence punctuated by misery and maxed-out credit cards. Except that the maxed-out cards are there, but the misery definitively is not.

Borwell grew up in Middlesbrough, and enrolled in a new local tennis club when she was five. She was always a sporty girl, playing hockey and football as well as tennis. Her dad was - and is - a scout at Aston Villa, who she follows passionately (her favourite player is Gareth Barry). She was at school with Jonathan Woodgate, who has remained a friend, and who has said in an interview what a good footballer she was. "I was probably better at football than I am at tennis," says Borwell, "but there wasn't much money in women's football when I had to choose which one to stick with."

Intent on completing her education, she got a tennis scholarship to the University of Houston, where she did a business degree. It meant she didn't turn pro until 2002, at the age of 23. Isn't that the age that most stars of the women's tour are burned out, retiring, or becoming fashion designers? Not really, says Borwell. An increasing number of tennis juniors are getting their qualifications before joining the tour. "Unless you're going to be like Sharapova, it makes a lot of sense to actually go out there and get an education. You can always go on the tour later on."

The tour. Many of the comedy-hat-and-union-jack brigade will be unaware that tennis exists outside of two weeks a year in SW19, but exist it does. And how. In the last 12 months, Borwell has played in tournaments on five continents, everywhere from Minsk to Nuriootpa (Australia, since you ask), Kolkata to Coatzacoalcos (Mexico). And Surbiton. "I travel pretty much all of the year. It's a pretty full-on schedule, and at my level you have to play more tournaments to get ranking points, so we're away the majority of the year. In strange places most of the time."

It sounds tough, I say, leading her down my carefully planned 'Lonely Tennis Circuit Hell' line. "Not really. There's a lot of college girls on the tour, and because we've all been to University together, we all have a different perspective. We obviously want to do well in our tennis, but we also want to enjoy the experience, and see the places that we're visiting."

"Also, we have a travel group now called the T-one-fours. That consists of some of the British girls - Anne Keothavong, Mel South and Olivia Scarfi - along with some Americans and South Africans. We tend to be really supportive of each other, and watch each others' matches. We try and live together when we're away at tournaments. We were all in Australia for two to three months together, and it was one of the best times I've had. We all did well with the tennis, and we were all supporting each other, and each night we'd cook. It was like having a family travelling with you. It certainly makes it more enjoyable and interesting when you're in these strange, small country towns somewhere in Australia. Occasionally I like to go home, but I think we're all the same. We get itchy feet and we're ready to go to the next place."

But, for all her travelling, the biggest tournament of her year is, of course, Wimbledon. With a serve measured at 114mph, her favoured surface is grass. Indeed, her biggest ever win came in the first round of the Championships, two years ago, against world No60 Marta Domachowska. Her reward? A tie against a certain Ana Ivanovic. "All I remember about playing Ivanovic is hitting one of my biggest serves down the 'T' at the beginning of the match, and she returned it as if it had come over the net at 60mph. It was slightly daunting."

The Serb won 6-1 6-2, but Borwell is beguilingly upbeat about the experience of playing someone who would become the World No1. "It's brilliant. I've played Sharapova as well. When I do finish, just to be able to look back at the girls I've actually played will be incredible."

In a world where sports stars are routinely accused of greed, the respective earnings of Ivanovic and Borwell so far this year tell their own story. Ivanovic has won $2,464,858; Borwell $9,023. Taking into account travel and living expenses, she has clocked up mounting debts over the years. "I've done a lot of juggling of credit cards," she admits.

Wimbledon offers the opportunity to make some much-needed cash. "I always hope that I'm awarded a wild card at Wimbledon, which helps me pay off my debts or continue for the next year." This year, she received a wild card for the Wimbledon qualifiers, where she succumbed to the world No121 in three sets. However, she has a wild card into the main draw in the doubles, where she is partnered by 17-year-old Jocelyn Rae. "She has a massive serve as well, and a really good volley, so on grass anything can happen. She's about 6'2", so I imagine it won't be easy to pass us."

Is she never tempted to jack it all in? "Everyone has their moments, when you're stuck in a small town in Mexico on your own and you've just lost, and you haven't made much money. You wonder, 'Why am I doing all this?' But then you get to travel, you see the world. And I look at my friends who have been stuck in 9-to-5 jobs for the last six years. And I think 'I've got another 40 years to do that'." Far from planning to jack it all in, she is intent on focusing on the doubles in the next few years, playing with a college friend and hoping to break into the world's top 50.

Those who ask why a 28-year-old keeps playing in a sport where she will never rise to the very top do so because they don't understand what sport is really about. It's too easy to forget that it's not about money, but about passion, competition and fun. In a world dominated by cynicism and commercialism, Borwell's Corinthian enthusiasm is a breath of fresh air, and something to be applauded.

So, if you happen to be on an outer court at Wimbledon in a couple of weeks, keep an eye out for Borwell and Rae, two big-serving British girls, in the women's doubles. Give them a cheer, and hope that nice girls can finish first. But don't feel sorry for Borwell if they lose. She has too much perspective for that. Just don't expect her to be happy if Gareth Barry leaves Villa this summer."

a good read!!!

seems like she is wanting to become a doubles expert!

I doubt Courtney even made the trip to Australia, the two of them teaming up together would have fairly slim chance of making the Australian Open main draw with their rankings combined and it's quite the journey to risk. I'm glad Sarah managed to get in with Martina for Auckland and score a win. Any chance of Sarah partnering up with Anne Keothavong for Melbourne? With Anne's singles ranking and Sarah's doubles ranking, that would probably be enough for them to get in. I can't see Sarah making this trip down unless she had felt she found a partner with a high enough ranking in singles or doubles to get into the Australian Open

I can't see Sarah making this trip down unless she had felt she found a partner with a high enough ranking in singles or doubles to get into the Australian Open

courtney is in auckland....http://www.annekeothavong.co.uk/on-t...c/Singles/2009

Nice interview with Sarah on the Auckland website talking about beer and football. I didn't know her dad was a scout for Aston Villa. Link here:-

Borwell/Nagle (GBR/USA) d. (2) Erakovic/Niculescu (NZL/ROU) 26 62 108 - narrowly edged them :woohoo:

We all know what trouble Anne had with Monica before getting her revenge in teh Krakow final so this is nice to see.

Brits 2 - 0 Seeds
Brits 1 - 0 GS Finalists

Love it :woohoo:

Sarah breaks into top 100!! Ranked 99 as of today. And with Mel reaching 99 in singles today, GB has two girls in singles top 100 and another in the doubles top 100. When was the last time that happened?!

Monterrey Open
Rnd 1: Borwell/Nagle vs Lefevre/Kondratieva
All four girls are around the same ranking mark (90-110) so this should be a good test for Sarah and Courtney. Possibly facing the fourth seeds Dechy and Santangelo in the QF

Sarah's blog (http://www.lta.org.uk/Articles/Sarah-Borwell-blogs/02062009---Reasons-to-be-cheerful/) made me LOL like a rem.

Presumably she hasn't twigged that the song is about a condemned man dreaming of home, only to awake to the reality that the only thing he's going home for is his funeral.
