Yes this information is correct.
She has a torn ligament and she will have an operation.

say what?

source?

Martina said that she would have treatment in Switzerland. I find it hard to believe that she is in Switzerland after only a few hours.

Martina Hingis Faces Surgery, Season Could Be Over

FILDERSTADT, Germany (Reuters) - Martina Hingis may need surgery on damaged ligaments after spraining her ankle in the semifinal of the Filderstadt Grand Prix Saturday and could be out of action for six weeks.

If so, Hingis would miss the remainder of the season, including the year-ending WTA Championship in Munich.

Organizers of the Swisscomm Challenge tournament in Zurich, starting Monday, said on their Web site that Hingis, who will be overtaken by Jennifer Capriati (news - profile - photos) at the top of WTA rankings next week, had been examined by her doctor, Heinz Buehlmann, on Saturday.

Buehlmann advised Hingis to have surgery as early as Sunday to repair torn ligaments on her right ankle and said she was expected to remain sidelined for six weeks, which means she could not recapture the No. 1 spot this year.

Hingis was trailing American Lindsay Davenport (news - profile - photos) 2-1 in Filderstadt when she had to retire after twisting her ankle.

The 21-year-old Swiss, who had to reach the final to retain top spot, will lose the number one position she had held for 73 consecutive weeks to Capriati when the latest WTA rankings are released Monday.

Poor Martina, that's #4 for sure and maybe even #5 cos Kim has very little points to defend at the beginning of the year!

I hope all goes well

This may be the best thing to happen to Martina in 2 years.

No, I'm not a Hingis hater.
No, I really wish her well, and as long as this doesn't hurt her career, I see a possible silver lining in this cloud.

Any idiot could see Hingis needs a MAJOR break from tennis. The Swiss Miss has been burnt out and not herself since losing in Australia. In 1999 and 2000 she had some bad breaks and bad luck, but in 2001 Martina was just plain bad. Period.

I don't buy all this talk about the big babes, the sisters, Capraiti and Davenport just getting better. Maybe they have improved, but
Hingis has come down a level from 1997-8. She is no longer using her most dangerous weapon-that brilliant tennis brain.

Maybe a long break will teach Martina how to WANT to win again. NOT to care so much about the Dubai's and Zurich's on the tour, but Grand Slams. Learn from Chris Evert's example. People said Evert was washed up in 1978, couldn't handle Navratilova's power, etc.
Chris took her first long break that year(3 months) and came back to recapture many a slam AND #1. Chris used the "second wind" tactic several times, and it's time Martina learned it too.

It's not too late for Martina to get het groove back. For her sake and ours, I'm looking forward to her at least trying in 2002, and not sleepwalking through the year like 2001.

Rollo, thank you very much for saying that! I think the same thing. Let Martina take this forced time out to evaluate her life and her career, to sort out what it is she really wants as opposed to what her mom wants, to see what is important to HER.

Lindsay's 3-month injury break earlier this year did her so much good this way, and Martina, her tennis career slip-sliding downward, needs it even more. The injury could be a blessing in disguise.

I very much look forward to the return of a feisty, fighting, determined Martina to the Tour next year!

You have a point on that Rollo.
Maybe when she returns all this will bring the best out of her, so she can show everybody that she is certainly not done.

i agree with u rollo & janie. I'm hoping it'll be one of those great stories when someone takes a break and comes ROARING back.

This is dangerous because last year it was Venus who was out for awhile and came back to take the tennis world by storm....this year it was Jen capriati...now I say it will be Martina or Mary Pierce or Anna who will win Aus02 and French 02 while of course Venus repeats at Wimbly and US02....there is something about taking time away from the courts that makes a player motivated......those are my prospects for 2002....

Well in my opinion Martina wasn't getting anybetter. Besides she lost that number one ranking so se can forget about getting it back this year so I think that she should just concentrate on what is best for her and that is fully recovering. If she rushes out there to fast then she would end up hurting herself worst than what it is now. She doesn't need to rush into it. That #1 spot is gon'. But by the way that she has been playing I doubt that she will regain it, EVER. With the Williams sisters (my favorite players), playing a fuller schedule and Jennifer Capriati already doesn't play a full schedule and she took over the #1 spot, Martina might as well say her #1 spot is gone, she just needs to concentrate on getting past the first round in these Grand Slam tournaments.

This is very sad for her. At this rate, she'll drop to number 4.

But you know, this long break may help her a lot. Look at what happened to Monica. And I suppose Chris Evert too. Hope she bounces back strong after her injury, but not too strong

The timing is as good as it can be for something this bad. She'll get TEN weeks off before the beginning of the saeson.

SVWillmsFan - you better of been kidding about that last comment, completely uncalled for... concentrate on getting past first rounds, last time i checked she also made a final and 2 semis, not a bad effort in the Slams.

And about Martina's schedule, if you look at total tournaments played, Jennifer would be right up there with Martina, and with no points to defend of course she could take the #1 with consistent play.

Get well soon Martina!
