how in the world did Jennifer Capriati beat Venus Williams to #1? Venus is clearly the best player in the world. She won 2 grand slams last year and this year. And she's not #1. What gives?

Because the computer rolls results over 52 weeks, a player becomes #1 weeks or even months after it's obvious she is on top. After winning the French, Capriati was clearly #1 in the public's mind, just as Venus was last year.
No one performed better than Jen this year in the slams. She may not stay #1 long, but at least she's a legit #1!
As for Venus getting to #1-it's all in her hands. If she plays Linz and Munich she should have a shot at it this year. A better result than Capriati at the Aussie would also get her there. The bottom line is she has to play though.

Most of the points are inthe GS tournaments. Jenn won 2 and had 2 SF in 2001. Venus won 2, had i SF and 1 first round loss. That's about 400 points right there. Then there are bonus points. Jenn beat a #1 to win OZ. 200 points. Venus beat a #10 to win the USOpen. 86 points (I think). Add in Jennhas played about four more tournaments than Venus and there you have it.

Why can't people admit that Venus played 4 less tournaments than the 17 allowable? That is the reason jennifer got to number 1 first. Lindsay didn't win any slams and neither did Martina. It isn't just about slams.
Capriati has points from 17 tournaments, while venus has points from 13.
Serena only has points from 9!
Oct 13th, 2001, 10:07 PM
yes Venus played less tournaments however Jen got to the semis of every slam and didn't lose in the first round of the French, that's a ton of points Venus lost out on.

Enough bitching already. They already changed the rules to help Venus get to #1, and she didn't capitalize. She'll probably get it in a couple of months anyhow.
Oct 13th, 2001, 10:44 PM
Well looks like nothing ever changes..been away from the boards since WTA's went down. and people are still beating issues in the ground. No buts about it, Jennifer deserves to be #1! I just wish Martina would have played the match. People act like it was a given that she would have beaten Lindsay(LMAO by the way!) This one fall is not the cause of Martina losing her #1 ranking. It is due to regularly getting whipped by the top players, and not winning grand slams.

Well, Venus had every oppurtunity to get there and didn't. Jen siezed the moment and did get there. So, Jennifer deserves to be there
Oct 13th, 2001, 11:21 PM
Why can't people be happy that Jennifer is #1. Venus will definitely get there next year, maybe this year after the WTA Champs.

Hey Guys! Jennifer has played an amazing year, one that she has earned through hard work and dedication. Regardless if you accept Jennifer as the number one she is; and at this point in time no one else deserves to be in her place right now. Not only is she enjoying a great singles year, but is currently sitting inside the top 100 in doubles also. Jennifer is the number one, she deserves it, and should be praised for her heroic accomplishments.

Congrats to Jen!
She deserves to be no 1 after all she's done this year.
Now we have a legitimate no 1 and I think that no matter how she got it, it's deserved.
I doubt Hingis would have beaten Lindsay, so Go Jen!

I would have title the thread this:
Congratulations Jennifer. You are the new WTA #1. But...
how long are you going to stay there?
I wonder if anyone can answer that.

At this moment its obvious that Venus is better then Jennifer.
Venus beat her the last couple times and she has won more tournaments recently, but Jennifer did great in the beginning and didnt had many points to defend like Venus who already won Wimbledon and the US open last year.
Honestly i dont think she will hold it that long, she isnt winning tournament anymore and has in the begin of 2002 much points too defend.
But well we just have to wait and see.

Congratulations Jennifer Capriati
Okay Venus Williams is good, but the begining of the season was so ..... CAPRIATI !!!!!
Oct 14th, 2001, 01:26 PM
I completely agree that Venus is waaay better than Jennifer.... at sitting back home instead of playing tennis.
Oct 14th, 2001, 01:30 PM
I have to agree with GoSandrine that the negativity around Jennifer's no. 1 ranking is disgusting. If Venus were no. 1, everyone would be looking for a reason to put her down as well.
I feel sorry for no. 1 players. The minute you reach the top spot; everyone looks for a reason to put you down.
Oct 14th, 2001, 01:49 PM
And smygelfh, you way better than ANYONE.... at crapping your ass off.

can't we just be happy that jen is finally in the #1 spot? I mean c'mon, she deserves it. I know that venus is the best player right now but she's not #1, it's becuz she doesn't play that often, if she wants to be #1, she should play a lot more tournaments. jen has done that and she is now #1! let's just be happy that she's #1, i mean this is suppose to be a happy day not a bashing day for the #1 ranked person. anyway, woohoo, jen is #1!

Getting to the No.1 is not easy at all!! So far, there are only nine women who've made it in the open era!!! Therefore, I'm feeling very happy for Jennifer!!
Maintaining the No.1 spot is difficult and have to deal with so much pressure!! I hope Jen can maintain her best for her ongoing tennis career!!! All the best for u, Jen!!! We, all the Jen's fans are feeling happy and proud of you!! And yeah, you should be proud of yourself as well with such a great comeback!!!
Congratulations to her!

You know what Jennifer is deserving of the computer ranking #1. She played more which is needed to conquer the computer ranking system and did better at the slams. However regardless of that Venus won more titles, 3 more than Jennifer, made more money, and equaled Jennifer in the Slams. To me those 400 pts that people are talking about should have been made up in the extra titles that she won. Someone said why can't people admit that Venus played 4 less than Jennifer. Hey I admit that I'm not one to deny the truth. Now why can't people admit that Venus is the better player, and won more titles than Jennifer?
Anyway to me Venus is the best player and has been for the last year and a half. I'm sure Jennifer knows that even though she is #1 that there is still a player out there that she hasn't beaten, and that players name happens to be Venus Williams. Winner of 4 of the last 6 GS and 12 titles in the last 2 years. Only Martina is equal to her in that department having won 12 herself, but Martina has only won 3 titles this year and no GS since 1999. So I don't think Venus is losing any sleep over that coveted #1 ranking. If she wanted it she would play more and had chances to get it at the beginning of this year. Clearly it's not that important to her at this time. And as long as she keeps dominating it will come soon enough.
So Jennifer can have the #1 ranking. She worked her but off and proved that she can still compete with the best of them. She even gave Venus a run for her money at the Ericsson. Congrats Jennifer the one thing you did do better than Venus was play more and win GS's. It takes a tough person and a good player to do both.

I want to thank everyone for there thoughts. Jennifer is #1. That's fine. Venus is ranked what? Number 4? You've got to be kidding! Houston, we have a problem!
Oct 14th, 2001, 06:20 PM
Venus will pass Hingis. This would have happened even without Martina's injury. The rest depends on Venus playing more.
