After reading so many fights and spiteful remarks on this board lately, I thought I would share something lighthearted with everyone. What were you favorite moments of joys @ a players victory in a grand slam or any tournament? It can be your favorite or just something that stood out to you.

Here are some of mine and they are in no discernable order!

Andre Agassi @ the 99 FO- After coming back from 2 sets down, Andre's reaction to winning was a mixture of happiness, fear, relief and overwhelming joy! I was so thrilled to see him back, playing great tennis and tremendously happy.

Martina Hingis @ the 97 Oz Open- I remember Martina being so tiny in this tournament. She looked almost frail! Yet she had this appealing girlishness and her joy @ winning and sharing it with her mother was really a wonderful moment.

Mary Pierce @ the 00 FO- Winning this tournament, after turning her career around by working with her brother was a real vindication of Pierce's tremendous talents. She did it all in this tournament, from beating Seles in the quarters with that infamous running shot between the legs to downing the favorite (and her then doubles partner Hingis) in the semifinals, Mary was definantly the queen of the tournament. It is a shame that injury has hurt her so much since then. I hope she will be back soon.

Serena Williams @ the 99 US Open- Serena's reaction of shock, disbelief and utter happiness when Hingis' ball went long on championship point stands out in stark contrast to Venus' obvious painful emotions while sitting hooded in the stands. I really believe that match was the turning point for both sisters tennis careers since then. Yet it was wonderful to see Serena so happy that she had won the family's first (of many) slams.

Pat Rafter @ 97 US Open- Rafter was amazing in this tournament and watching him go into the stands to get the congratulations from his family and friends was very cool to watch. Pat's warmth and graciousness in this tournament made me an instant fan and I miss him. Come back Pat! I still want to see you win Wimbledon!

Goran Ivanesivic @ 01 Wimbledon- Who could have predicted this one? Goran was outstanding in this tournament and his thrilling victory over Rafter made the championship very sweet indeed.

Pete Sampras @ the 00 Wimbledon- I'll go on record and state that I have never been a Sampras fan, yet the emotion he showed in winning this tough championship showed a lot of qualities about Pete I didn't realize he had including a tremendous love and respect for his family and for the game. I hope that Pete can win at least one more slam before calling it quits.

Marat Safin @ the 00 US Open- Amazing match from the sexiest man in tennis (Yes, I am quite partial here!). Marat did everything amazingly well, from serve to his return of serve even keeping his infamous temper in check. His reaction at winning was tremendous as was his victory.

Guga Kuerten @ the 01 FO- No list would be complete without the wonderful Guga! Not only was this his third FO victory, but his reaction to winning was amazing! I loved how he drew a big heart in the clay and laid next to it! A wonderful victory for a great individual!

Jennifer Capriati @ the 01 Oz Open- Jennifer's reaction on championship point when she readied herself for Hingis serve stands out because she knew that her dream of grand slam success was about to come true. Her reaction of utter joy was shared by the crowd and fans everywhere. It's amazing how far she has come back.

Venus Williams @ the 00 Wimbledon- After missing 6 months of the season with injuries, Venus returned to Wimbledon as somewhat of a dark horse to win. Facing the defending champion in the finals, Venus practically pirouetted across the court when Lindsay hit that backhand into the net. Her joy @ holding the championship trophy was a thrill because it was a long time coming.

Williams/Williams @ the 01 Oz Open- After losing to hingis in singles, the Williams sisters went on to claim the doubles crown and their first career slam in doubles. Their joy and happiness at this accomplishment really stands out because of their tremendous heart in a tough match and their obvious love for each other as sisters.

Hingis/Kournikova @ the 99 Oz Open- Both ladies faced tremendous controversy in this tournament with Hingis comments concerning Mauresmo and Anna's double fault fiasco in singles. Yet these two, who had a difficult relationship as juniors, came together and played an amazing match in the doubles finals by leaving their troubles outside of the court. Their shared happiness at winning foretold the beginnings of a successful doubles partnership.

Lindsay Davenport @ the 99 Wimbledon- After watching Steffi's forehand into the net, Lindsay turned to the crowd to scream out her joy, only to quickly cover her mouth in embarassment. This reaction may made laugh because it was so sweet and girlish and something you would expect from Lindsay who is an amazing individual and wonderful champion.

Steffi Graf @ the 99 FO- After defeating Hingis, I was surprised to see Steffi actually jump up and down on the court. For years, I had watched Steffi win with graciousness, but this was the first time that I can remember her actually expressing joy. It was great to see especially since she would retire a few months later.

Gabriela Sabitini @ the 90 US Open- Gaby's sole slam victory and the fact that she beat Graf in doing so added to her joy and everyone else's. I vividly remember Gabby jumping up and down after she won. I really wish we could have seen Gaby in more slam finals because she was such as amazing player.

Serena Williams @ 01 Indian Wells- the only reason I choose to mention this is solely because of the atmosphere in which both she and Clijsters had to play in. Don't misunderstand. I am not trying to bring up racial issues here, but I had to laugh when Serena won the match and defiantly pumped her fist at the crowd as if to say "You thought you would get rid of me, Well too bad!" It really demonstrated that Serena had a toughness to her that I think most people were not aware of.

Well, these are the moments I can think of offhand. Please share your favorite moments with me and the rest of the board.

How about Jana 1998 Wimbledon victory, after she hit a good forehand I believe down the line, she slump into her feet covering her face and apparently crying only to stand up and savour the moment of glory and destiny for her, it is really nice.

I am waiting for Monica to show her moment her joy (hopefully soon)

What a nice thread!

All of those moments were emotional!

I doubt Monica will have grand slam victory again, but if she does, it will be very emotional!

Jana Novotna - Wimbledon 1998 - sunk to her knees in sheer joy.

Lindsay Davenport - Wimbledon 1999 - I think Kazbeee's avatar captures the moment.

Steffi Graf - French Open 99 - shows that winning still meant so much to her.

Jennifer Capriati - Oz Open 01 - Never seen anyone jump so high.

Goran Wimbledon 01 - says it all really

This was far and away the best for me. I'm going to try to get the match and the dance burned onto a cd.

BEST ONE: Venus Williams winning Wimbledon 2000. Unforgettable, never seen anyone jump so high.

MOST AMAZING ONE: Jennifer Capriati winning Australian Open 2001. She knew it was a winner the moment it left her racquet and Jennifer Capriati fans around the world were stunned. She had a Grand Slam title at last. A year later she wins her third!?! Unbelievable.

WORST ONE: Thomas Johansson winning Australian Open 2002. I wanted Marat to win but as it became clear that Johansson was going to get the most shocking and biggest win of his career I began to so look forward to his leaps of joy and to see how much it meant to him - this unexpected, unbelievable victory. He wins, he smiles (just) and walks to the net to shake Marat's hand. That's it. That's f*****g it!?! I so wish Marat had won.

I am completely biased here, but I love everytime that Jen wins a Grand Slam (obviously) but she always looks so incredibly happy, as opposed to Thomas Johansson - I agree, that didn't make me think "yay". Whereas Jennifer's hugh jumps and leaps and big smiles always make me smile loads.

NOW if only we could get that HAPPY, HEALTHY Lindsay back!!

veryborednow: I am very sorry if my post sounded nasty to you. I thought Lindsay's first Slam victory was all the sweeter for her having been treated so rudely by the other players (I don't even know who they were).

Anyone who viewed my post as mean or nasty, PLEASE accept my sincerest apologies!

most of the ones already mentioned and a few more:

Steffi's first Wimbledon title in 1988, the beginning of something very special

Boris Becker winning Wimbledon at 17. He just looked so innocent and boyish! Aw! (forget what he turned into, for a minute!)

Aranxta Sanchez-Vicario's first RG title, also at 17. She just had so much aggression and firepower at such a young age.

And a personal favourite of mine, is Natasha Zvereva's win over Graf at Eastbourne. I know it wasn't a Slam or even a final, but there was so much exuberence in her celebration!

Thanxs Apoet for reminding all these great moments. I was reading your post and the images were just running inside my head! I think you pretty much chose my faves too!

I just like to see any player win his or her first slam! There's something special about winning a slam but when it's the first.... it's just explosive! Players can't hold their emotions. It is beautiful to watch .... I remember I had some tears in my eyes, when Steffi (my fave of all times!) won her last slam! Venus first slam win at Wimby was unforgettable also........

Thanxs again Apoet!!!:bounce:

Great thread. My favourite was Jana at Wimbledon '98 - she'd waited so long for it; tears of joy this time. Venus at Wimbledon '00 and Steffi at RG '99 were also pretty special.

Mark - I agree with you about Johansson. I'd been rooting for Safin as well, but towards the end I was thinking - ah well, it's Johansson's first Slam so there'll be a huge demonstration of joy. And there was a sheepish grin and the dullest speech ever.
