Russian prediction contest: DEADLINE SUNDAY, AUG 24 at 3am (EST - New York time)

First of all, I want to congrats to Vera, Maria and Alina for making into the US OPEN main draw. Well done, girls! :yeah: So proud of you! Much better results than the last three slams of the year. I knew Vera and Maria could make it as expected. :bounce: :worship:

I just don't want to even think about that. Too subjective.

I like fresh2flash predictions, I hope that yesterday's Alyona's bad match was just weather. I am worried about Lina's tendency to completely crumble against big opponents in big matches.

Tenn_ace is obviously predicting The All-Belgian final, and that in the third tournament in a row Henin will slaughter all our Russians. No way!

OK, I'll give it a try.

Kuznetsova 3Rd ( but I have a feeling that this could be wrong and could be a big surprise ).
Douchevina 1rd
Zvonareva SF
Lina K. QF
Masha K. 2nd Rd
Alinka 2nd Rd.

Nadya R16
Alyona L. QF

Masha S. 3rd Rd
Elena D. R16

Nastya SF
Elena B. R16
Dinara 2nd Rd ( this has a potential for a surprise too, she is definitely a darkhorse )

Look at Nastya's past results, she is alsways hot or cold. She has three very winnable first rounds, and then she could be a completely different player. Like last year at New Haven, she siuddenly beats Henin and Hingis. Then loses to Bedanova off all people at US Open. Then goes to win Bahia. This is the best surface of Myskina, and having to face no big falt-hitting babes, there is no player in this draw she can't beat on a good day. I am just betting on her having that one good day at quarters.

I don't know who loses when, but I want to see 6 Russians in the round of 16.
And at least two in the quarters.
And the most important thing is for someone to have a career tournament. And have an impressive breakthrough.

Keep them all for 2 round. Then we'll have a time to discuss.

I don't know... I mean, Nastya looked atrocious in Toronto. She plays like she did against Pratt and the last 2 sets vs. Elena... she's not getting by Nagyova, as long as she doesn't retire herself. I know Nastya's very up-and-down, but I wouldn't bet on her doing much.

I think Vera, Lena B, and Lina are the players who could have the breakout tourney... with Lena B. having the best chance.

Vera's head is in space lately, but her game has still been impressive this hard season. If she relaxes, she can take out Kim on an off day.

Lena Bovina has been so impressive in a few matches of late... against Amanda in Toronto, and most of her match vs. Cappy. If she's playing well, she'll wipe out Dinara and Anna in the early rounds... and on a fast hardcourt, with Lena's game, and Justine's long strokes... if Lena's game is on, she can seriously trouble Justine. Lena's had many bad breaks this year... and it may be time for her to finally get that big victory.

Lina has a friendly draw, and with the way Amelie has been playing of late, and her injuries... Lina has a good shot at the QF's. Unfortunately, I think a rested Kim would handle her rather easily this time... but a QF is still impressive.

How could Freshy forget the Moscow Miss (Kirilenko)? ;)

Sharky, can I please have a dealine extension? I thought you meant the deadline was August 24 that 3pm EST and not 3 am EST. :o Or was is 3am PST?

Some of you have predicted that not one Russina will lose in the first round. And if that happens I'll eat my hat. I used to be the cat in the hat. ;) And I hope to have to eat my hat. But to think that all 13 of the Russian's will play a good first round match is not being realistic in my mind.

1st Quarter - What, is this a football game Sharky? ;)

Kuznetsova - 3rd
Douchevina - 1st - The pressure of playing crowd favorite Ashley Harkleroad will be too much for her in her first U.S. Open.
Zvonareva - 4th
Krasnoroutskaya - 2nd - Little Masha (Kirilenko) will upset her in the second round.
Kirilenko - 3rd
Jidkova -1st

2nd Quarter

Petrova - 4th
Likhovtseva - 2nd

3rd Quarter

Sharapova - 4th - Big Masha will upset Jennifer Capriati in the third round amid many shrieks and squeaks! :bounce: Unfortunately her big win over Capriati will take too much power and energy out of Masha and Elena Dementieva will beat Maria in the fourth round in a 3 set battle.
Dementieva - Champion - Sharapova will clear the way for Dementieva by taking out "The Thick Chick" (Capriati) giving "The Darling One" (Demetieva) a clear path to the title! :bounce: And Dementieva will upset Justine Henin-Hardenne in 3 sets in the semi's and Kim Clijsters in 3 sets in the final! :D Elena finally won her first WTA tournament this year. So the pressure is off. She should go out there and just swing away. And that makes Elena a very dangerous player at this years U.S. Open! :) The only player Elena could be overmatched against on a hard court in the 2003 U.S. Open draw is Lindsay Davenport. But Clijsters will take care of Davenport. And the pressure to win her first grand slam singles title will get to Clijsters in the final. And Elena will benefit from that.

4th Quarter

Myskina - 4th
Bovina - 3rd - The pressure to make it back to the quarters will get to Elena.
Safina - 1st - Dinara hasn't played a hard court match this summer. And that will show in her first round match against Carly Gullickson. And the crowd will be rooting hard for Gullickson. Which could upset and unnerve Dinara.

Well there you have it, Sharky. You wanted my predictions. And I obliged dutifully. :worship:  :D

not too suprised by Jidkova's loss

Douchevina and Krasnoroutskaya were dissapointing though

I didn't see the matches, but something tells me nerves played a part

That opens the draw up for Maria K if she plays her best tennis

but the 2nd round aint bad either!

tenn_ace, I went for plenty! :D I said Elena Dementieva would win the 2003 U.S. Open and that Maria Sharapova would beat Jennifer Capriati in the third round. And that's not exactly playing it safe.

But the horrible and unexpected first round losses of Lina Krasnorouskaya have put a damper of the efforst of the Russina's. :(

But Maria Sharapova's 6-1 6-1 thrashing of Virginia Ruano-Pascal surprised me! And Maria looks bigger and stronger than she did at Wimbledon. She's has to be more than 130 pounds now. She reminds me of a bigger and stronger Daniela Hantuchova. :D

And has anyone seen Tursunov's match? That _WAS_ amazing. This guy will be a Top player, he has everything for that. Trust me.

When I first saw Kafelnikov, it was, I think, Kremlin Cup 1992 or 1993, and he was playing someone not even on Central court, and I saw him, and my immediate opinion was - this guy will be BIG. I was very impressed by Tursunov.

I've seen that and was pleasantly surprised, too. The guy is ready for big wins. And he was reserved and poised and even a bit strangely quiet after the match, like it was no big deal for him to beat Kuerten. :)
And he was fresh after 5 sets and it looked like he was ready to play another 5.

By the way, there are 9 Russian girls in the 2nd round. Nobody else has that many. USA has 8. :)

Well ys, how are you going to feel with Dmitry Tursunov playing under the American flag? Because according to Ted Robinson he's awaiting his American citizenship. And he's been living in America fewer years than Anna Kournikova and Maria Sharapova have. And they haven't and aren't likely to change citizenships. But why is Tursunov already changing citizenship?

Tursunov sure showed the steeely resolve and great concentration that Russian athletes used to be known for.

He was so stonefaced I thought he was hypnotized.
But the forehand is big and he hit some great volleys.
I agree with Arhivarius, tons of stamina with Tursunov. Looks like a bright future.
And the players who lost first round, Lena was to play Dinara, Lina to play Maria K., and the two Veras. So the most Russians who could have gotten through to the round of 32 was 9. Based on the draw.
So if Vera Z., Maria K., and Dinara come through, that's three teens, plus Sveta and Masha - 5 young 'ins.
Plus Nadya, Alyona, Nastya and Go Elena L.!!

Has very little to do with whether he'll play for Russia or not. Sergei Fedorov is US citizen since 1996 or so. He plays for Russia. Slava Fetisov is US citizien for quite a while. He is a member of Russian government. The only thing that changes if he gets US citizenship is that he will _ALSO_ be eligible to play for USA, if he wants. It's still entirely up to him.

You are an immigrant too, and you understand as well as me that US citizenship is almost always gotten for reasons other than changing the country of representation. Tursunov, at this point, is almost nobody, Challenger player, and for his personal future he might have wanted US citizenship. It is great that he is having his breakthrough before he had to make a choice. It's pity that Sasha Bogomolov didn't have that breakthrough earlier and is now lost for Russia. But if, say, American team of Bogomolov/Tursunov will be playing Germans or Aussies or Spaniards, unlike previously, I'll have no problem supporting US.

Interesting thoughts on citizenship and what it really means to the tennis players who change citizenship.

But after seeing Tursunov play last night I would think he would have a better future on the Russian national team than on the American national team.

And how is it that Sergei Fedorov can change his citizenship from Russian to American yet he still plays for Russia in the Olympics? Do the same rules apply for tennis players? Could Dmitry Tursunov become an American citizen and still represent Russia in the Olympics or Davis Cup?

An error in terms. They do not _CHANGE_ citizenship. They _ADD_ second citizenship. USA do not recognize dual citizenships, but US is not ITF or IOC. And other countries do recognize it. I will probably be getting my second citizenship in four years, so what.

For variety of reasons.. First, I live here, not there, so it makes sense, because what happens here defines my life. Also a lot of practical reasons. I don't want to run into a consulate of the third country ( like it was with Argentina few weeks ago ) for visa while I can just enter as an US citizen. Second reason. Helping to move relatives and loved ones to here. Third reason, wider opportunities of employment. Like now there are plenty of jobs in my field, but because many of them are connected to homeland defence, and I am not a citizen, I am not eligible for them. A lot of reasons.

you'll see...

Well, if you know him personally, and you know what he wants, than that's entirely different level of argument. I would not even argue then.

Thanks, ys. I didn't know about adding a second citizenship. But Russia won't recognize both citizenships. Thus you'll be an American citizen. Good luck with it.

Thanks, ys. I didn't know about adding a second citizenship. But Russia won't recognize both citizenships.

Says who? Russia would not even care, as long as I am having my Russian passport, and US would not care as long as one has US passport.

You know, USA requires Russians to have visas for entrance, while Russia requires Americans to have visas. And visas cost a lot of money. So most of my fellow Russians are entering Russia on Russian passport, and then re-entering America on US travel documents to beat that.

Hi Arhi! :wavey:

Sharky Sue, what the the first place winner receive? I heard a rumour that it's an all expenses paid trip to Vancouver, British Columbia to get a Vancouver tour from you! :hearts:  :bounce:

But tenn_ace is close on my trail and tail!

TBE and Freshy! :o

ys, I hope you're careful about your citizenship and visa. That's like it could be tricky. It seems like you and your friends are trying to beat the system. That sounds risky!

dear my cat,

if you have QF, SF, F, or W in your predictions and you get it right, your points would be doubled! In your case, you predicted that Elena E would be the winner of US Open. It's a long shot! ;)

You heard the rumours about the winner prize? Hmm..... shall we find out? ;)

I have your phone call tapped! ;)

That was a tough loss for Vera Zvonareva. :(

Even though she physically overmatches against Amelie Mauresmo, Maria Kirilenko seemed to play competitive tennis against Amelie Well done Masha! :)

That was a tough loss for Vera Zvonareva against Meghann Shaunnessy. :( But Meghann has a much better first serve and is in better condition than Vera is. And once Shaunnessy won the second set Vera was in deep trouble. And it turned out that way.

But on a positive Dmitry Tursunov had another great 5 set win! :D Congrats to the Marathon Man! :bounce:

So, if my understanding is correct, if Nastya loses today, dava_russianrule wins the contest. If Nastya wins but loses in quarters, it's betweem Sharky and dava_russianrule, depends on math, and if Nastya makes semis, it could be even me..
