Anyone know why there are so many byes in the qualifying singles of this tournament? I just counted. Of the 24 first round pairings, 16 were decided by byes. Seems sort of extreme to me. This means that 2/3 of the players in the second round of the qualies got there without playing a match. This is sort of unusual isn't it?

totally confused, too  :drink: :banghead: :retard: :help:
last year we saw a 48 field which led 12 into maindraw which is normal.
Why have there been any byes this year ????????????????
Is the tourny running empty or what ? explanation plz...

alot of players on the entry list withdrew for some reason :o
most of them would rather play qualies in the Bronx to prepare for next weeks US qualies.
pretty embarrassing to say the least, its quite a horror field.

Also Els Callens won't be in the field as she's in doubles final in LA
either so Beier Ko goes into maindraw with a bye
can't think there will be any alternates or they wouldn't have given out 16 byes

NY is nearer to Flushing Meadows than Toronto ;)
And some more Canadians have been given a chance to qualify with 4 of them into final rd ...

when it was gonna be 12 qualifiers
it had to be 48 draw for 2 rds
24 would mean only 1 qual rd
32 would mean 3 qual rds and they dont have those in 64 draw events (qual pts are higher than 1st rd wins)
but they have 12 qualifiers so thats a non-starter.
they have to reduce number of qualifiers to 6.
